Wear a helmet.

If you want to wear a helmet, do it. No point in complaining when other people don't. its not a fad, its a choice. A helmet may stop a concussion or two, but i dont see many people out there wearing mouth guards either...Is that a trend? No, I think you need to worry about your own hide.

If you really get this upset about other people and their styles, maybe you should strive to be a judge in the Olympics

Anytime dude! Those dry slopes are probably really easy to "learn how to fall" on too!

I made my about tall tees in jest. Most of the kids who are trending this hella gangster look without helmets deserve what they get.

In all honesty do you think it will hurt their brain if they become concuss? I doubt many of them are working with much brain power as it is.

To all the people saying mind your own business--look at the comments of people talking about their homies in comas or other stuff. when you step on the hill its not just about you, and i even cringe when i say this.

In a way, ill argue against myself here--I support the heli-skiing companies (e.g. SEABA in haines) where people have been dying at a steady pace per year, because I think that for a lot of us skiers, we need to feel that risk and push our boundaries. However, because there are people that will be affected if you get seriously injured (namely your parents, friends, etc) it only makes sense to take as many REASONABLE precautions as possible to keep yourself from being a vegetable.

I dont really like telling people what to do, but in this case, its bigger than just your steeze, its responsibility to the people that are around you. So personally, i think that its selfish to wear a helmet.

Finally, to all the people going all out with calling me out, I've tried to stay away from calling names or labeling people who choose not to as dumb or stupid or gapers or some other thing that gets thrown around the internet. I said that the trend is dumb because it is--like most trends, but this one sacrifices safety for looks.

Its just getting the issue out there and trying to keep anyone on the fence from going to no helmets because its 'cooler', im definitely not trying to convince the people who are so stuck in their ways that all they will do is call me out.

tl:dr(sparknotes)

people around you are sad if you become a vegetable; not keeping yourself safe with REASONABLE precautions is a selfish way to go about skiing.

yeah people understand where you are coming from they just dont give a flying fuck. you are entitled to your opinion, but being a prick about it isnt going to convince anyone

Not wearing a helmet is like not wearing a seat belt in your car car. If a big accident happens you're likely to get FUCKED. Usually nothing happens but it only takes one time, and it really doesn't take much to fuck your brain up.

But getting mad at someone that chooses not to wear it is useless. The best thing you can do is tell them what you think, and if they decide not to listen at least you tried and it's there not wise decision.

And I don't think I've ever heard someone get up from falling saying "GOOD THING I WASN'T WEARING A HELMET!"

But whatevs, I don't really care what people decide to do

ive broken two helmets beefing--- without them i would have gotten a lot more concussions.

Brain injuries are something doctors are basically just realizing the effects-- NFL Soldiers etc

when i wrestled though high school theyd keep you out for two weeks, now by state law its 6 months.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL I'm sorry, but im not black and i do not celebrate Kwanzaa . Not got any time for for those hats.

i understand what youre trying to say but this is also a poor argument. fact.

of course if you dont have a helment on you will hold back a little more and not put yourself in a position to get hurt. well what happens when you wanna learn a new trick? according to your logic we know our limits and we cant progress.

bottom line if its a nice soft day and im taking it easy meaning basic slides and no more than 3s and 5s, fuck yeah im wearing nothing up top. if its mid winter and im in the trees or throwing down some 4s on, then im gonna throw a helmet on

I actually think the halo is sick. You could just put it in a beanie. Not worth $60 though. EVERYONE WEAR A FUCKING HELMET and if you have something to say then SHUT THE FUCK UP. I think everyone realizes that helmets are more safe right? Let them make their own life choices.

i wanna see all these kids "who dont wear one because they never had a problem in 5000yrs of skiing" and glorify the past go climbing. do you still have ropes tied around your waists like in the good old days of climbing?

fact is that skiing helmets were too expensive and too uncomfortable for everyday skiers back in the day. but now its just a fucking safety standard and its affordable and comfortable.

and i dont cry if one of you fuckheads splits its head open and needs donations to pay for all the handicapped stuff. you adult idiots can do whatever you want but dont tell all these easily influencable kids on this website that "ITS MY THING" and its cool to not wear a helmet. CONSTITUIONAL LIBERTY FTW!

seriously, adults are old enough and if someone is so stubborn that they feel like someone is taking away their basic human rights when asked to wear a helmet, so be it. but think of all these young kids who for some reason could follow your lead. on NS and in real life.

It really is personal preference, the sooner you understand this, the sooner you will be at peace with the fact that there are stupid people who choose to not wear a helmet.

I got a pretty severe concussion this year wearing a helmet, can't imagine what would have happened if I didn't have one. Probably would be a vegetable...

might as well bring my personal story in here more. really appreciate this thread.

i blacked out twice while skiing. first time without a helmet in like 2004 or so. woke up in hospital, couldnt play video games/watch TV/read a book for at least a week. another time WITH a helmet, probably twice as much harder impact, barely 2 minutes gone and didnt feel any side effects aferwards.

wear a helmet kids. both times i wasnt doing anything dangerous. both were just straight airs. but a little overshoot/imbalance and there is so much force adding up...

This guy has his head on straight. It depends on what kind of skiing you do and how comfortable you are doing the fuggin shit that you do. Fuck It.

This.

Not wearing a helmet is a very bad idea. Not respecting your limits is also a bad idea.

Personally, I think helmets are a whole lot cooler than beanies.

Just about everyone I knew in my ski bum years (at Squaw) wore a helmet. It might have been different on other mountains, but people here seemed to understand the risks pretty well. When you are sending a cliff, or straightlining something, a whole lot can go wrong. Even if it is something you have done many times, the unexpected can happen, I would much rather be wearing a helmet if it does. I need my brain.

If you are not going to wear one, so be it. I just hope you don't learn the hard way.

There are other reasons for that in football. It changes the way the game is played. Players have also gotten much bigger and faster. If players hit the same way WITHOUT helmets we would see deaths.

If you want to push yourself, you should wear a helmet. If you don't want to....well that is your right.

Are you typing from a phone?

People who flaunt their choice to go helmetless remind me of cig. smokers - "I don't give a fuck" and "mind your own business". Yea, what rebels. Nothing screams freedom like COPD. Traumatic Brain Injuries are pretty dope too. There's nothing cool about poor choices.

You misquoted me. I said " mind your own GOD DAMN business." When you ski over 4000 days I'll consider your advice.

just wear it

I actually think this would be the perfect solution to all those park rats out there with no helmets. Also, the kwanza thing (lol) is for wearing under helmets, hats, beanies, whatever.

i always wear a helmet regardless if it looks "steezy" or not. i have had a few good hits on my helmet, and it saved my head a few times aswell, so i would say wearing a helmet skiing is way safer than not wearing one at all. All it takes is one fall to fuck you up

Honestly I'm gonna go right off the bat and say it..... a lot of you kids out there have been way too fucking mothered growing up. SKIING IS DANGEROUS. The resorts do a really good job of making you feel like its not.... but it is.

Every time you pop your bindings on, your taking a chance. Every time you get on a lift, there is a chance that you might get seriously hurt, and or die and no helmet or pads is going to completely take that away. Have you guys never read the giant liability clause at the back of every lift ticket you buy? Have you never read the alpine responsibility code ?

This isn't a fucking rollercoaster, your actions on the hill have opposite reactions. If you take a 50 foot jump, and over shoot it on your head..... I'm sorry but no amount of helmet will ever save your life from that. You want real prevention, it's called TRAINING. Work your way up from the baby park, take some lessons, ride with guys who are better then you. Nothing beats common sense, experience, and skill.

Should you wear a helmet while you train? Of course, but that's where common sense comes in. Are kids going to try to copy shit, and ride without a helmet ? Yeah, but those lemmings deserve to get hurt, and will learn from it in the process.

I know after 19 years of skiing that i can ski without wearing a helmet on many parts of the mountain and not get hurt, and if I push myself, or am skiing near rocks then I might wear one.

Enough of this Gestapo "EVERYBODY WEAR A HELMET ALL THE TIME" shit. If you can deal with the risk of our sport with intelligence then go play some other pussyass sport like soccer, or golf. Woun't get hurt doing that.

So, I am coming into this conversation late, and I didn't read anything but the OP, so this might have already been covered but:

I don't think you can claim that not wearing a helmet is a trend, of any kind. I can't think of any time in skiing history where everyone wore a helmet. If anything, helmets are the trend (they're not really, I'm just saying).

I wore a helmet for two years or so back in highschool, got a really bad concussion so I stopped wearing my helmet 'cause I think it had a bit to do with the concussion (not fitting properly and what not). After about a decade of not wearing one I finally got my shit together and got a new helmet and wear it pretty much every day. I honestly don't know what I was thinking not wearing one for that long, and can't comprehend why a professional in any sport wouldn't wear one, let alone recreational skiers.

Another thing to think about, you might be the best fucking skier on the planet, but some people on the mountain are terrible, terrible skiers.

I usually wear a helmet to protect myself from others smashing into me and ski's/boards hitting into my head, I trust in my own ability but not in everyone elses.

That said, it's your life.

Honestly the best thing (IMO) that energy drinks have done for the sport is that they have gotten high level athletes wearing helmets. Have you ever seen someone competing in a redbull toque? It's insane how impressionable young minds are, and a lot of that comes through role modelling. Ya, sure as a skier I feel perfectly comfortable in my ability to shred without a helmet. But think beyond yourself: if the older generation can convince the up and comers that helmets are not only safer, but "cool" as well, it would benefit everyone.

I wear a stupid looking POC helmet even tho it looks giant and is annoying to wear headphones with because its really safe. I have a bunch of great hats that i could ski in, but its not worth being a little bit stupider for the rest of my life, just to look cool one season or even one mellow day.

I knew someone who was hitting an urban and had a semi-casual fall, he wasn't wearing a helmet but no one thought anything of it and he continued to hit the rail. The next day, friends went to pick him up for a day of skiing and found him face-down in his own vomit and not responding. After being rushed to the hospital, doctors told us that he had suffered from severe brain hemorrhaging, they told us that due to lack of oxygen to the brain that he suffered severe brain damage. Wear your helmets because personally, knowing that I wont ever be able to shred with that dude really blows. If you're against them then just look at them as a confidence boost, not an ego boost.
