Wear a helmet!

WEAR A HELMET

Today marked a very tragic day in whitewaters history. 34 year old Carey Boxer died in a horrific skiing accident. Carey was an avid ski tourist and mountain biker.

Carey would have left home today like any other day. Saying goodbye to his wife and newborn child, and telling them he would see them as soon as he got home. Heading up the mountains with friend they would discuss what the future holds for them. Never could they have imagined what was coming.

Carey and friends had decided to ski a burly line at whitewater ski resort in nelson B.C. called the Hummer Face. He reached the peak with no doubt great anticipation for what he thought would come next. Carey was first to drop in. He rolled into the face and the slough he was standing on began to slide out from underneath him. He began tomahawking downwards. He was thrown over various large rocks and cliffs, and rolled right into a skier proclaimed “no exit range”. He did not stop. Over 300 meters down his friends see him, lying motionless in the snow.

We can only assume that Carey died mid-tumble, but there is no way of knowing for sure. When patrol arrived on the scene he was already dead. In a desperate struggle patrollers tried their very best to revive him. There was no hope. He was gone. Four hours later Carey was taken back to Nelson where his wife and child were already mourning his death.

This incident raises many questions about how exactly it happened. It may have just been one of those things, and it probably was. But what I cant stop thinking about is, would things have been different if he was wearing a helmet. It may not have saved his life entirely but it could have given him the chance to say goodbye to his loved ones.

Think about it guys, it doesn’t take much effort to put on a helmet. And if it were you, I know you would want at very least the chance to have a chance to say goodbye.

This is not the first time deaths like this have happened. And helmetless deaths are occurring more and more often. Earlier this season for example a man was skiing in Sunshine village in Alberta Canada. He was in bounds when he caught his edge and hit his head on a thinly covered rock. Had he been wearing a helmet, he would still be here today.

This is my plea newschoolers, wear a helmet!

Everything happens for a reason. The death of Carey Boxer was unfair, and has taken a huge impact on his family, friends and even people that did not know him personally such as myself. But it happened for a reason, it must have. Will we ever know for sure, I think not, but I have already learnt something. From now on my helmet doesn’t leave my head while I am on snow.

Just think about it, is it really worth it to take a chance?

Deaths are never a good thing nomatter who it is but hopefully this will inspire more people to wear helmets.

Terrible to hear, I personally wear a fullface and recommend helmets to anyone who skis and especially for people who ski lines. But helmets do have their limitations, they don't stand up to very heavy impacts and most likely judging by the rockband he hawked over he probably died of body trauma anyway. But you might aswell give yourself that extra little chance to survive and horrible crash, they are light, inexpensive, warm and you don't even realise it's there after a few times wearing it.

r.i.p

yep, buckle up kids. thats always sad and scary to hear when someone completely knows what they're doing and it still happens.

Helmets now a days are a neseccity, although many of us believe they are ugly, they will save us day in a day out. thats waht they are made for, I agree with wearing helmets

this year at one of my local hills two one skier took a turn to go onto another slope and acidentaly hit a guy in front of him. the first guy who wasent wereing a helmit died instantly (i guess he was going pretty fast) and the second suvived only because he was wearing a helmat.

So people, please wear helmats, they keep you warmer.

Thats horrible... My sympathies to you, his family and friends

And yes, wear a helmet!

I can't ski without mine, I just don't feel safe without it

My helmet is warmer then any hat i have. makes sense for me to wear it.

and i agree, you dont even notice it on after a couple days of wearing it.

Rip In Peace man...

i dont get y people dont. i always do. u wont be percieved as a fag or uncoolif you wear one. i think thats what kids ar starting to think now. that helmets look gay and arent cool. or your a pussy if you wear a helmet. helmets have possibly saved my life several times. i hit four trees in one crash once and i had on a helmet. i dont think i would have survived and if i did id be super messed up if i didnt have a helmet.

WEAR A HELMET ITS NOT THAT HARD

my helmet saved my life no more than a week ago. im sufferin from mad concussion and a smashed collar bone. on the other hand my lid is destroyed which is just aswell cos my life would hav been, accordin to the doc, had it not been for the lid. i was just in the park, it can happen 2 anyone! take heed.

i fell three weeks ago and my helmet cracked. if i didnt have a helmet i would prob be a vegetable with some brain probs now so im lucky, i really have no excuse to never not have a helmet on

im so used to my helmet it feels weird skiing without it. like when i was sick one day i skied to help build a jump for my friends to hit.i went without a helmet to stay warm while digging. It just felt so weird.

I remember that day. It's just terrible thta half the resort was looking on when he fell. I personally didn't see it, But that a sombre, terrible day at Whitewater. The guys lived a block away from me and for the next few days there were constintaly dozens of people at the house, with his wife. RIP Buddy.

yes everyone should do this if you dont own a helmet already. with the past few winters being bad for us skiiers and injury i think everyone should consider.
