We Stopped Dreaming

Holy Cow.

if what this guy says is true about the difference 3/4 of a cent more would make, then it would be well worth it IMO

That narrator is so boss. He is hands down my favorite physicist. He makes every thing so exciting to listen and watch

"Im worried about congress...not factoring in the consequences...of their decisions."

And I'm worried that people think you are a brilliant person with this groundbreaking logic.

sorry to ruin this thread, but I'm just not sure if I fully agree.

It's not about money. It's about resources and covering the bases at home. We need to find solutions (and act on them) for the major problems that face humanity on this planet before we start attempting to put a human on Mars. Sure, it will inspire, but humanity is at a different stage now than it was back in the 60's. Instead of advancing technology to send a handful of scientists to Mars, why don't we spend that "money" (remember - money is the only thing on this planet that doesn't actually exist - we made it up out of nothing) on figuring out the fresh water issue, the clean energy issue, the fresh (healthy) food issue, and lastly the over population issue of our species.

now I'll play devil's advocate to myself and say that Stephen Hawking states that we have under 100 years to get off this planet if we want to survive as a species. Is there any meat to his statement?

problem, EU?

i totaly agree with this. the problem isnt so much the lack of money, its the lack of the flow of it, if people get inspired to do great things again it will help the economy a lot

I made the most blatant repost of this, kinda feel like an ass.

Oh well, inspiring video, Tyson is the man

oh no, not another one of these threads of a physicist saying a lot of crap that is both unbelievably obvious and also almost meaningless but people eat it up because he says it in a smart sounding way and theres a nice song and some nice pictures too. though to be honest this is the least sickening one i've seen because at least now he's talking about something real. his bias towards science is still ridiculous though. i agree that we probably don't need to spend as much as we do on things like the military, but that doesn't mean the money should go into NASA like he makes it seem. i also think politicians are far too concerned about getting reelected and thats not the best way for congress/the house to run, but it doesn't mean they're all idiots and don't think about the countries future like he says. when he talks about only needing one penny to buy all that stuff, what does that even mean? the shouting guy whose quote was put in is also just kind of dumb and doesn't seem to get how taxes work. i also found it pretty damn insulting when he said the only thing people dream about is future technology. i personally don't really give two sh!ts about future technology and i hope that the rest of you don't sit around all day waiting for some cool new gadget to come out either. thats all i got. still sickening, still insulting, but at least he tried talking about something real this time even if he did do it in an incredibly narrow minded and uppity-on-himself way.

It's not even about science though, It's about dreaming. If we as a country have something to push towards, something that doesn't hurt others, it's something that americans get behind, and will raise the moral of our country. This in turn will boost our economy. I think using space as an example is perfect, because unlike solving global warming (which is also necesary) it is something that we can see being accomplished immediately, you have people land on mars in one second, instead of us doing something like cutting down carbon dioxide levels (which i reiterate, it needs to happen) which will help over the course of 10 years. For something like this to boost our economy and have a profound affect on us as a country, It needs to be something that has an immediate ending, not some huge long term project.

I think sometimes people do not get to see the connections between everyday technology and the science that inspired it. MRIs, for example, are a byproduct of particle accelerator technology.

With the issues you mentioned at the end, it is quite possible that planning for an interplanetary mission could solve them. As space would be scarce, having clean water and food will be the biggest issues. The technology developed to solve those problems could very well be filtered down to an everyday application.

I often think about where the Einstein and the brilliant minds of our generation are. Where the inventors and innovators are. Not the snuggie inventors and that bullshit. The real ones.

I dont know if they just are not as celebrated as maybe they used to be? Or people have just lost their drive.. I dont know anything about this really, but I wish people wanted to explore the unknown more and not settle with what they know.

I may be totally wrong here. Just my thoughts.

As for that video, good message. Dont stop dreaming.

the "you're gay" put down, you just don't see it much anymore these days. you sure showed me.

and tree60, you should make the videos instead of that guy. what you said makes a lot more sense than what he was saying.

Ha the shit many scientists are working on today makes traveling to the moon look like childs play. Stopping funding for NASA sucks but hopefully a new program is put in its place.

It is true that these days science engineering and math degrees are not for "cool" people. Too bad TV in the 90's brain washed everyone. Think about how cool Minkus was compared to shaun hunter in boy meets world........

In real life Minkus goes on to making a difference in society while shaun hunter knocks up 3 bitches and goes on wellfare.

Word on the street is that Tyson is teaming up with the inspired crew for the next movie. Watch Neil and Tanner get zooted in the international space station

touche.

So the past few months I've randomly decided to get into Star Trek. All this inter galactic travel on my television makes me want humans to figure out warp drive. At least give me the holodeck so I can play GTA at a whole new level.

In all seriousness though - Star Wars is way better than Star Trek. Suck it Trekkies!
