We need your advice: NS Movie

ok, so we're trying to figure out the specifics to make this the best contest possible...here are a few ideas we had and I want to know what you guys think, as well as any ideas:

1. The edits would not be posted online, instead, they would be sent to NS, where a panel of Judges(industry people who are non-bias towards music and stuff like that) will vote for the top 5 edits. We would also ask that no one posts their edit online so that the movie is something everyone will want to see. Then the best edits would be turned into the movie. After that, the general NS population would see the movie and then vote for the best edit, that winner gets the grand prize, the other edits will get prize packs. And Yes we have some bad-ass sponsors so don't worry about that.

2. We will need someone to make an intro to the movie, should we have the top 5 edits submit their own intro? Or should we get the intro done professionally by someone who knows how to use Motion 3 etc? If so, who could do it?

3. Should we limit the amount of skiers per edit? I was thinking of making the max amount of skiers per edit around 4, that way it's not just a mash up of a shitload of skiers. So that each edit can at least tell some sort of story that we can follow.

4. What should the max time be on each edit? I was thinking 6 minutes.

I like it, I'd def go in on that,

But I think lower the time, just so you know all the stuff is good eh?

ok, so like 3 mins minimum and 5 mins max, unless the song goes over a few secs then its not a big deal

Would the edits be made from personal footage, or selected footage? If its personal footy, I imagine it would be hard to make it a true NS movie, there are mad members and a large majority of them def deserve their moment in the spotlight.

3 - 5 minute edits each sounds good. but limiting the amount af riders per segment i dont think is good if you like me are in a crew of like 10 ish mates so insted of names for each rider why not just not the name of your crew so everyone can feel equaly recognised.

it would be sweet if every bodys edits had a story or set genre to it so it couldnt just be an edit of 10 riders with 30 second segments, but one mini vid under one group name. duno how clea this came out but see if you can get what i mean.

Def. limit the amount of riders per edit to help make it a more fully rounded movie showcasing some of the better talent NS members have. Maybe 2 or 3 friends per edit? If you're going to have prizes and it would be super hard to shell out enough gear for 10 people per edit or maybe it won't be I don't know what you've got lined up for sponces.

Good point that there are a lot of members who may deserve their time in the spotlight, maybe release all the edits that didn't make the cut before the final movie comes out?

3-5 minutes sounds like a good length for the edit, and if after choosing the edits you take the best shit from each it will help keep the overall length of the movie down.

That's just my $0.02, this is not a bad idea and I hope you can make it happen. I would certainly be interested in contributing to this and helping out with any editing if you need it. Let's see it happen!

no that makes perfect sense...if anyone else agrees to not have a limit of riders, just quote this reply, I was thinking of having a limit because i want the riders to get a good amount of exposure, not just be a shitfest of riders with no flow...and i am stressing that every rider is credited in the segment, because this will be a great tool for kids trying to make a name for themselves

I am agreeing with you 100%...the amount of gear we have for prizes is not enough for each edit to have more than 2-3 riders...i want this to be well rounded movie, not for it to seem like a bunch of edits mashed up together...if you dont like that idea, just make more than one edit! there wont be any rules to how many edits you can enter, however, you can only be selected once for the top 5

BTW, Sponsors, this is your LAST CHANCE to get on board with the movie before the contest begins, you can always join after, but try and take the full opportunity, just pm me

What is the planned over all length of the movie?

NS's top rated videos should be in the bonus section.

im thinking about 20-30 mins..its only going to be distributed on NS, so there won't be any bonus section unfortunately

I'll be making an edit for sure, it will probably be myself, david vanatta, ben southworth and aidan sheahan........ when does it need to be done by, cuz I'm working full time and don't have a ton of time right now, but i'll get it done by whatever we set the deadline at.

Right now it sounds like an online "Battle My Crew"

Crews submits master edits and the ns population votes on the best seg in the movie when it comes out...

yea im really interested in helping out in whatever way i can. personally i think it should extend beyond 5 edits, cause that only really covers like 5 groups of kids on NS and there are far more than that. also i think you should have raw footage submitted and then distribute it to a team of editors including yourself and break it up. i think that would make sure that anyone who has skills can be in the movie rather than being dominated by the already big names of NS.

the only problem here is that we wont capture the story the edits are trying to tell, I like the idea of extending it to maybe a top 7 edits?...also another problem is the fact that I would need all the editors to be using Final cut, it wouldn't work

I just finished setting up my new editing studio in my house and I figured I'd show you guys where the NS movie will mostly be edited...8gbs of ram in this baby, 4 cores @ 3.0ghz...the only thing not in the picture is my Synth rack, with a Circuit bent Moog MG-1, 100watt yorkville amp, and some other goodies

I dont see any empty energy drink cans there...no redbull or NS symbols...psh! some editor ;P

Ok here is my idea for the planning of this movie.

You have each crew submit an edit to be voted on by the masses of NS. The top 5-10 crews (final number can vary), as voted on by members of NS, would get the priviledge of having a segment within the movie. That would be the only edits the NS general population sees until the movie debuts.

Now onto the movie. It would have a storyline to follow throughout the entire movie in order to have the segments flow from one to the other (so it doesnt just feel like 5 different segs thrown together). I have a few suggestions for those too if you want. Either way, get the editors from each crew to re-edit the their crews material (maybe allow for new material to be added on top of initial footage) to fit the NS movie storyline. That way the edits are fresh to the NS population when the movie drops since they will have to fit within the storyline, the riding/cinimatography will be consitant with the initial videos so quality shouldnt be an issue, and each crew will still have a say in the creative process by adding their own flavour to the general storyline.

As for the intro/outro...maybe have the crews editors pitch ideas for what they think would work well for an intro/outro given the storyline.

I'm going with this...this is the best idea so far...If you agree with me, quote my post and say I

Yup word to that. I wouldn't expose the footage until the film but I would definitely consider a re-edit. Storyline would be sweet or just make it flow

Thats the idea...in order to make it not look like a botch job of 5 different edits, some sort of flow needs to be established...even ifs its only simple.

there should be some sort of prop that gets "passed" from crew to crew for each segment. i will try and think of some way for this to work. something along these lines with the soccer ball.

Interesting idea...not sure how to make it work 100% though since a lot of the footage might have already been shot (since winter is now over)

How much variety of styles and parts of skiing will be in this? or it is a pretty much all-park movie?

And when will be the expected time we should have it done by? End of next season so that we can get fresh footage of everything?

That will depend on how the voting goes. If NS votes for all park, thats what it will be. The movie will be taylored according to the votes, thats the beauty of this design!

I really have trouble seeing how this movie could flow, i mean even if the editors re edit there part noone has the sam editing style and if its only one person that rededits the movie than it

people should submit videos for a location like: eastcoast, westcoast, europe etc and at least one edit of each location has to be chosen

no offence man but i much rather watch AM movies edited by NS Members on their Laptops then watch some contest edited together on $6,000 worth of equipement, thats what makes NS, NS.

If NS were to make a Movie, there owned by Studio 411, i rather see the resources put togehter for a camera crew to follow some of the best from the site, then edit that into a movie.

I don't see this Idea going anywhere

dude you just made no sense and came off hypocritical.

the essence of NS is the raw footy, but if NS is going to make a movie, have Studio411 hook us up and do it?

that's black and white son.

i think what dave's pushing is the ability for people to showcase their abilities, thus producing an edit. the editing done by dave, from what i understand, is to maintain a fluid rhythm so it isn't choppy and annoying as hell to watch.

..2cents

The video is for fun people. And honestly...I wouldnt want either of your guys help with it if you have close minded opinions like that.

This is a trial run to see if we can even make it work. Was NSTV a hit first broadcast? No, but look at it now...streaming live coverage from events like the US Open.

NSradio has technical hiccups in the beginning too, but after a while Doug was able to bring people like the IDEA crew on for broadcasts. How fucking sick was that?

Stop being so negative towards NS and think of the potential here...

Besides, we're not forcing you to enter.

We're not forcing you to help out

We're not forcing you to watch it

Its for fun...like NS :)

i dont know steve. some people might not get the exposure they would without a giant public movie like this. also if the viewers like what they see they can always look up the riders and what not to see the hard work that they have also done.

also if they put enough hard work into this and they win the prizes sound mighty nice and they could showcase their work this way rather than spending a bunch of money to produce their own and maybe not getting it back.
