I think different people can find that soul from different sources. I can honestly say that there are many pros who do enjoy competing and pushing themselves, while the others prefer doing mellower stuff. That's why this "having fun" phrase can be misleading, because fun can bee interpreted in many ways. When it comes to surfing, skating, snowboarding and freeskiing it is true that they include a unique lifestyle-aspect that originally stems from Venice Beach, but it doesn't mean that it's wrong to enjoy the same sport in a different way. Some people tend to dance while partying during the weekends and then there are pro-dancers, who practice hard and try to improve. Obviously this doesn't mean that neither one's dancing for better reasons.
