yes. i wish there were more pro skiers with the attitude of "do your own thing"

x games was basically "you have to be like this" or "do this" to win. when douglas kept saying "these guys are going to need a dub to win" just made me angry.

all the big air comps were boring to watch this year. slope comps are cool to watch but way to repetitive.

casabon, parry, wesson, vanular, hornbeck ect. seem to be the only ones who do their own thing. i might get hated on but hey this is ns.

fuck yes, keepin it raw as fuck! i wish skiing could be more like this. too many bandwagons in skiing.

So many legends in that video, it should be awesome. I love how they pretty much say fuck zumiez and all the corporate bullshit. Not to mention you can relate it to freeskiing because we don't need coaches in this sport. I didn't start skiing to have someone tell me what the fuck to do and I started skateboarding for the same reason years before I got serious about skiing. I get the same feeling riding on the mountain doing my own thing that I do when I go skateboarding. Hell yeah Vanular for posting that, such a good message.

thats definitely what is cool about skateboarding the vastness and creativity people just doing whatever the fuck they want, i think skiing is sadly going away from that tho i think there are oppurtunities we all should take advantage to make our own mark on the sport.

everyone can just fuck off. skateboarding is creating different aspects of the sport. it goes the same as any that has been around forever (skiing). when the sport gets bigger, things like comps and companies get involved. now you're at a point where people either go skate for career, fun or to get better. that fun part will always be the soul of skating (like ski bums are for skiing), career will always those who want to make a living out of skating, and the get better just to improve oneself and skating without the possibility of making a living outta it... nothings changing, just more people are getting involved.

^^ my thoughts exactly, after seeing that i thought sheckler would be in there somewhere.

Good theme for a film though

i doubt everyone in the video portrays the same message. sounded like he was more of the do it for fun, not for fame type of thing, and im sure you can agree he was fun with what he does. he skated long before MTV came knocking as well.

That first thing Rob Dyrdeck said is EXACTLY why I got into skiing. And the rest of that video (if yo compare it to skiing) explains why I still ski.We can learn a lot from skateboarding lets not write it off.

oh absolutely. i have nothing against dyrdek, hes hilarious and bringing skateboarding to a whole new audience, but him discussing the corporatism in skateboarding or whatever you want to call it would be rather hypocritical.

maybe YOU could relate it to skiing..let's hear your story of how team managers treat yall? i wanna here it from all pro ns members..good or bad stories. i'm not sponsored so obv. i don;t have any but i once sent jimbo morgan a promo and he hooked me up w/ some free gear and told me if i got serious about getting sponsored i'd need to use poles, train errday, and compete. 3 things i don't enjoy. the only reason i'd ever wanna ride for someone who helps me out is if they support what i do..like the last dude said. if i choose to only film and do that sorta thing so be it..alot of ppl like doing that better these days..like tanner for example..granted he's done his work but y should u have to prove that before deciding to do what u want?

People are not going to sponsor you to do exactly want you want to do unless doing want you want to do makes you money. Sponsors or team managers want you to do contests because they think thats how you will get noticed and make money for them. Its all a business. If you just wanna ride for fun then ride for fun. But once your getting paid to do it you have to answer to the people who are hooking you up.

This looks like an absolutely sensational video for the soul reason that it's about soul, i mean this exactly what skiing is starting to lose, it soul. Its all about whos the best and who is going to be huge. Its not about the fun of the sport, which is almost all the sport should be about, i mean i talk to little kids at my local mountain and there all caught up in trying to go pro and get sponsored. Not that there's anything wrong with that its just that they are missing out on the whole fact that skiing is for fun.

Valid point, Although i remember before i was sponsored, i never gave a shit about who was winning comps or whatever, my favorite pro had to have a style i wanted to emulate. for example back in the day i thought Vincent Dorian was sick and had dope style so i bought his pro model jacket from sessions, then Mickael started steezin and i wanted his D12 hoodie. i never gave a fuck about who could spin the most or stomp every time in contest runs unless they had that steez. I think Unless you have tricks and style kids want to emulate your not gonna sell shit. thats just me tho. here is a refreshing video. best 5 blunt ever. Check it.

I think different people can find that soul from different sources. I can honestly say that there are many pros who do enjoy competing and pushing themselves, while the others prefer doing mellower stuff. That's why this "having fun" phrase can be misleading, because fun can bee interpreted in many ways. When it comes to surfing, skating, snowboarding and freeskiing it is true that they include a unique lifestyle-aspect that originally stems from Venice Beach, but it doesn't mean that it's wrong to enjoy the same sport in a different way. Some people tend to dance while partying during the weekends and then there are pro-dancers, who practice hard and try to improve. Obviously this doesn't mean that neither one's dancing for better reasons.

"do your own thing" can mean so much more then just doing it for fun and to ride with your friends.someones "own thing" can be competing, training.some people are just driven, the take the love and they use it to drive them.now i do my own thing i ride as much as possible and im always learning new stuff but i dont train. i do however compete. i love the competition feel, although its stressfull at times there is no better feeling then stomping that run you wanted when shits on the line. you go from stressed out and tense to being more relaxed and more stoked then the first time you did a backflip in a few secconds.your own thing is a personal thing. its doesnt mean ride to have fun and be a rebel, it can also mean to take that fun and work hard at it, compete and become more technical.everyone always say "do your own thing noone cars" then next thing you know someone is getting shit on for dub flips.. ever consider that the dub flips are there thing? if everyone did it for fun and never took it seriously then no one would realy be "doing there own thing"as much as vanular pushes style and does it his way i think that bobby brown pushes technicality as his own thing./rantgood thread though!

I think we can learn a lesson from skateboarding and snowboarding in that a lot of those pros either don't compete or do maybe two "fun" comps a year with their friends. There will always be the Shaun Whites of the world who are only in it for the money who only do big comps and don't give a shit about anyone else, but I think there needs to be more emphasis on the filming aspect of skiing. We need more indi ski movies. Everyone loved Hot Lunch, so why hasn't anyone else made a movie like that? It's great they skiing has a lot of money to start with to have the super high quality Huge movies that we do. (just look at PBP or MSP or even WME as much as I hate to say it) that gives us an automatic outlet starting off that skating and snowboarding never had. But, skiing can't thrive if we only have those movies. Sponsors need to realize that most kids aren't buying skis because of who won the X-games pipe (how many people ride rossi) but what people in their favorite smaller movies/webisodes are riding on (how many people ride Line or Amplid?) well made low budget movies are the soul of action sports, (watch videograss, or the Pirates crew movies.) the free ones especially (skeleton crew, partysnakes etc...) those movies do sell boards and more kids see them because they're affordable, and kids can get access to them easily. Not to mention they show more than just riding. (but without the stupid pseudo-deep interview of a pro looking back on his career or some awkward deep commentary about what riding means.) If you really wanna know what I'm talking about watch these movies:
