We all Die in August

That reminds me of a conversation I had with my buddy's girlfriend. She's convinced there will be some sort of "reckoning" or "awakening" in 2012 (whatever that date was that was thrown around a while ago). She firmly believes in horoscopes, and her explanation for why no one has landed on the moon since the first moon landing is that aliens told the astronauts to leave and never come back. Apparently they have a massive complex on the far side of the moon and NASA has covered the whole thing up. definitely the funniest conversation I've had in a while.

nothings going to happen. its like when they set off the first atom bomb. they thought it'd start a chain reaction and swallow the earth up in a giant fireball.

it's been disproven, its simply the end of the mayan calender, and the beginning of the new fire cycle, in no way does it correlate to Armageddon- at least this was according to an anthropologist I've talked to that has spent 40 plus years studying native cultures in central america

Actually, the poles are due to shift sometime soon....

we're not all gona die in 2012, somethings gonna change, that's all. maybe not exactly on dec 12 2012, but the poles are due to switch sometime

yea seriously, they were probably like OH fuck, we should aerate this farmland for crops, and quit doing this algorithm for this calender, we've already gotten 1,500 years in teh future, Alacmaetzuec will have his rapture by then..its useless

I think people give the mayans a lot more credit than they deserve

well good for you and your anthropologist. i didnt mention armageddon, i just said it was gonna be a party. a new age is upon us

not really... there are scientific studies that talk about how the earth is going to shift polarity... which would melt the ice caps (as we are seeing) and cause multiple earthquakes tsunamis hurricanes etc.. any kind of fucked up weather patterns (which we are also seeing)

apparently this shift in the earths polarity will screw up magnetic fields n such (im not a scientist this is what ive heard) and this is a natural cycle or "cleansing" of the earth if you will, has happened 3 or 4 traceable times already in the history of our planet... the dissappearance of the city of atlantis would be credited to one of these magnetic shits in polarity...

its coincidental that the mayan calendar ends and predicts the "dawning of a new age" on the same date as this polar shift is predicted by scientists...

of course this wouldnt occcur all at once it would be a process that would take roughly and decade... which would consist of an increase in natural disasters untill the full shift has been made...and they believe we are in the "transition period" at this moment...

so yeah its not just the mayan calendar... there is other reasoning which points to the winter soltice of dec 2012 as armageddon...

many other ancient texts point to 2012 as a major shift in history as well... mind you, these texts have accurately predicted other major events in history that at the time, had not occurred... such as the crusades and world wars...

there is a video somewhere that explains the scientific theory in full... i dont feel like finding it right now but if u really want let me know and i will...

i don't think it's coincidental. also, a lot of other texts point to 2012, and i think there's something philosophers of the past knew that we don't right now

When I read the thread title it sounded like the name of a crappy (aren't they all?) screamo band or something.

just something i remember watching on youtube, apparently the polar ice caps are no oldder than 4000 years old, and that could be evidence of the last polar shift, which supposedly happens every 3600 years or so. some scientist said that HE BELIEVED that the north pole was 'somewhere north of wisconsin' and the south pole was somewhere in the pacific ocean.

this would explain why mammoths died out, because they would have been a tropical animal (i.e. ON LAND, not ice). and plants were found in the throat of the mammoth dug up in siberia. antarctica had animals 4000 years ago. and the polar shift would have changed the climate and caused what some consider a 'cleansing'

None of the above is what I came up with, before you guys flame away. I do believe that philosophers do know something we don't, though. I'm not going to debunk any theories because there are too many things we don't know about the world (and universe) we live in for us to start making assumptions.

^ Oh, and also the sun's poles are set to switch in 2010.

Apparently the sun will line up with the center of the galaxy too, but I don't have any reliable sources for that so I don't know how true that is.

That's cool as hell. I think I saw this on tv a few months ago. I think it might be kind of cool if it spawned a black hole. I mean chances are we would all die but there could be a slight chance that we go to another dimension or something.

when the scientist working on the manhattan project were going to test their first atomic bomb they thought that the explosion would be so big that it would ignite our atmosphere and destroy the world. there will always be speculation for the unknown.

and im going to agree with jeff on 2012 not being the end of the world. myans had 13 eras that were 260 years a piece or something like that. that will just be the end of the last era and begin a new one.

Can you cite any of that jargon about polarity shifts? It sounds kind of silly, but maybe you have good sources.

As far as the melting ice caps are concerned...

For one, the peninsula in Antarctica that Gore speaks about in his movie is located just above underwater volcanoes that began erupting in 1997. The actual mean temperature of the Antarctic continent is actually significantly cooler than it was a decade ago and the ice mass, on aggregate, has grown . This fact was published again, today, in IBD's op ed page.

I don't want to wander off into some Global Warming debate, but there are definitely some curious loopholes in the modeling built on the Greenhouse Gas theory.

August Burns Red. My girlfriend listens to them. I hate them. Actually I hate all her music. Shes a preppy girl that listens to screamo. shes an odd one

no the theory is legit. My dad talked to some geology proffesor about it breifly and basically the notion is that obviously they can't be sure about when it happens and what happens when it happens. I always thought that it was North and South switching. But it will just fuck up all of the satellites and GPS and maybe fry some computers.

first off, whoever said the ice caps being less than 4000 years old is completely wrong. Antarctica has cooled slightly most likely because of hte Ozone whole that has been created over the continent, excluding the peninsula that sticks out. Ozone is a greenhouse gas, so with less of it, it got colder

This report=reporters having no idea how nuclear physics works.

So they just fill it up of comments and stupid conclusions to try to get more people reading their nonsense. Do yourself a favor: go to school, dont listen to the 3rd sources and try to understand the stuff for yourself.
