Ways to make gas...

Ok so about 7 months ago i bought myself a very nice 1999 dodge ram 1500. Its got a 5.4L V8 engine and gets about 9 miles per gal. well gas obviously blows but i dont want to sell my truck cuz i have big plans for it. Anyways i was wondering if theres any car/trucks NSers out there who could give me ideas to get better gas mileage. So please help NS, negative comments are not needed.

Thanks, bCHUBBS

get one of those plastic things that go where your tailgate goes. mythbusters proved it gives you better gas mileage. good luck on your hunt!

When you're coasting, leave it in gear. A modern engine does not use fuel when you're not accelerating. When you're in neutral, you're still using a tiny bit of fuel to keep the engine from stalling.

Draft behind big rigs. (dangerous)

Avoid stop and go. Surface streets, backed up freeways, will kill your mileage.

Dump all the unnecessary weight in your car (shit you have in the bed, whatever)

Do NOT remove the tailgate. It hurts your aerodynamics when it's down or removed.

Next time you're in for tires look for lightweight tires. BFG mudterrains fuck your mileage (I know, I have them on my Tacoma)

That's all I can think of right now.

ehhhh.

I dunno about that.

Anyways. I forgot to ask, is it diesel? My neighbor has his Ford Excursion chipped with propane injection. He says it gets better mileage now. It's a better spend of money than a "pre cat converter"

SHIT DUDE...ur advice is great +++KARMA. But anyways to answer ur question no it is not a diesel. My buddy has a duramax diesel with a chip and it gets 21 miles/gal. and i was thinkin bout the tailgate thing and i know the best answer is a tauno cover.

I looked some things up and changing your air filter to a free-breathing performance filter helps alot. also performance exhaust. the site is http://www.autoanything.com/ResearchGuides/Savegas/

keep this going looks to be a helpful thread.

Hey Chubbs! There's a company I'm actually working with right now that'll get you INSANE gas mileage. I'm talking like over 60% better gas mileage and to where you're only paying .75cents a gallon.. The company is Half Water / Half Gas, and if you haven't heard of the technology yet.. basically for a few bucks you can convert any car to run primarily off of Hydrogen.

It works. My friend Kaycee drives an Suv (Aztec) and is now getting 42 mpg.

My company is right now in the process of creating some videos, promotion material, and marketing campaigns for them.. so it's going to be sick!

it's all in acceleration man. Don't let the RPM's get above 2000 usually. It takes a while, but if you accelerate really slowly, it helps save a ton of gas. Braking also can kill you. You just have to be smart with how fast youre going, like if a light has been green for a while and you think it might turn red, ease up on the gas or cut it and start coasting. If you do it right, you can go through every light at decent speed and never have to accelerate a lot. Also, if you can help it, never stop at red lights, just roll slowly and give yourself space. Also, obeying speed limits helps a lot, even though it sucks. Having the windows down instead of air conditioning below 45 m/h will help too. Above that, drag reduces gas mileage more than the air conditioning does.

These are all really easy ways to increase gas mileage. My dad uses these and increased his gas mileage on his 97 ford explorer with 330,000 miles on it to 22 miles/gallon(when he bought it, the gas mileage was 18/gal).

there's no way you only get 9mpg. I have a 5.4l v8 expedition that undoubtedly weighs more than your truck and I get 16.3mpg. If you're getting 9 you made a very poor decision buying a truck if you can't keep you foot off the gas. You should buy a cheap motorcycle and only use the truck for hauling and towing. Or, you could hold off on your "big plans" and put that money towards gas, lifiting your truck and putting huge ass tires is only going to make things worse.

umm are you serious? that's been widely discredited, 10 minutes of google research comes up with dozens of reputable scientists debunking that. and that website just screams scam.

Lemme simplify what ATL was saying. If you have to use your brakes, you fail because all the fuel you used to get you up to 50mph was just wasted when you only needed to be going 40mph to roll to the next light.

and when you're going down a hill, gather as much speed as you can because accelerating downhill is cheaper than accerating uphill.

It's all about driving style. Pretend there in an egg between your foot and the pedal. That's how you should drive.

And there's obvious ones like your tires should have the max psi they're rated for. Your car will roll better, accelerate better etc.

actually there was a guy in the 90's who ran a dune buddy off water. It had something to do with sticking metal plates in the water and running electricity in it to separate the hydrogen which then got used to power it. It is possible

yeah its all cool and shit, but there is no way to net a positive increase of energy from splitting water to h2 and o2 (yet).

see this is the negative comments im talking about...why would i bullshit u and say i only get 9 mpg. all this is a guessing matter for you. how do u know ur vehicle weighs more than mine? u dont and another thing is how do u know my "big plans" meant lift and big tires? my truck has a nice lift...i have stock rims and want to put better looking rims on, i want to put a teaneu cover on, im keepin it at a 32 inch tire...not big at all, im looking to add accessories, add some rock guard, bullnose grill, etc. i never stated "i want to lift my truck huge and put massive mud tires." Also i have not done a single thing to my pickup over the last 7 months nor have my parents put any money into it like im some spoiled rich kid. im 19 and work for alot. i want to find a way to put money into my truck that will increase gas mileage. with the side note my truck has a little over 80,000 miles on it and runs great why not put money into it.

That was enough haha, but i will def look out for your company ghostdragon that sounds insane!

also thanks to all the other positive input from everyone!

yes, I'm serious.

The concept of electrolysis is certainly not new and the technology is over 100 years old. It's been working just fine since then.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=6Rb_rDkwGnU

This system isn't going to make your car run 100% on hydrogen - which we even do HAVE that technology. My friend just got back from auto tech and they had a model car there that ran 100% on water. so we've both seen it with our very own eyes.

This system is however not designed to convert your car to 100% hydrogen. It is to simply convert your car to a hybrid, which still runs off gas.. but makes it run 100x more effecient through electrolysis.

And if you're searching youtube, look for the videos of people that created these systems. Or are using the exact same electrolysis technology elsewhere.

Honestly though, I know little about the technology. That's not my niche.. I'm in charge of some of the marketing aspects. But if you want to speak directly with the company owners or my friends that have installed this on their car already and that are in fact getting over double the gas mileage they had before.. let me know. I can get you their info.

dude, you're an idiot. How could I possibly know a full size suv built on a F150 chassis weighs more than the pick up version? Weight of a 1999 Dodge ram, 4,200lbs; 2004 expedition, 5500lbs. I love how you defend yourself, "I'm not gona lift it, it's already lifted" lol. maybe you shouldn't be driving a lifted pickup if you want to save money on gas. The mods you do plan on making are just as bad, nigger bars are heavy and unless you're tearing through untouched jungle you don't need them. Also that truck is rated at 15cty, 21hwy, if you're only getting 9mpg you bought a fucked up truck. You really show your inexperience in the real world, "it runs great why not put money into it" you got that one backwards asshole. Why do you even own a truck? Do you tow or haul stuff every week?

I read this thread for some odd reason, and I agree with some of the stuff you say..especially the last part about hauling. However, it is his truck and he worked hard for it so relax a little maybe?

Then again you come off as a kid just arguing to argue...even with your valid points.

i was gonaing to say exactly this. i drive like that now. and when i go to/from work i know hwere the best places to coast and what not it. and learn the roads, like least stops ect so you dont have to stop and start wasting gas, my cars rated at like 20 city, im getting like 24 city, and thats with some hard accelerations(stop onto a 55 mph road)

im surprised no one has mentioned this....at least i didnt see.

there is a system called water4gas. you basically evaporate water in your car into usable fuel. basically your car runs on gas for the first few and last few miles of your trip to clean the water out of your fuel lines, but the majority of your trip is mad using strictly water vapor. a guy i know has been using this for a few months and so far no problems.

http://www.water4gas.com/2books.htm

go there and read up, if youre feeling like it buy the books.

my dad has an f250 super duty with a fucking v10 thing is faster than shit.... but it get like 12 miles to the gallon..... look in to some chip idk know what they r called but some of them increase fuel economy at least i think???

i read your whole post, clicked on the link, and burst out laughing

that would almost look legit if the site was built back in 92'

you have just provided me with my morning lulz. +karma to you

bahahahahaha i forgot to mention, his contraption looks like a peanut butter jar with a couple of tubes sticking out the top! i think you can almost see what brand of spread it is too! i'm showing this to my friends, this site is epic!

All of these suggestions are good. If you want to mod your engine, then you can get a better cold air intake and a bigger air filter. More air to the engine= more efficient use of the gas which equates into more gas mileage. Air filters and intakes are relatively inexpensive.

You could always go the expensive way and reprogram your ECM for better mileage.

yeah a buddy of mine just put in a new air intake system and i think it only cost him 250$ so thats not that bad. but like i posted earlier if you change your air filter to a free-breathing filter than you will gain more.

keep this going everyone

Is your truck 4x4 or 2x4? Do you have manual lockin hubs or auto hubs? If you have manual ones make sure you drive around with them in the "FREE" position and not locked in. Also if you don't have a full time transfer case, take it out of 4 wheel and drvie around in two.

Also check all the normal shit. Brakes not rubbing, no trouble codesw for the engine, properly inflate tires, change spark plugs, airftiler, all that shit.
