Waxing

I recently went into my local ski shop to check out this years skis and starting talking with one of the main employees there and we got onto the topic of waxing. He was telling me that hot waxing skis more then once a year is bad because it burns the bases and covers the pours on the base and it is bad. I thought waxing was supposed to cover the pours of the base. Is any of this information true? should I stop hot waxing my skis as often and only do it once or twice a year? Thanks for sorting this out for me.

Whoever that empolyee was, was either taking the piss and hoping you would believe it or is an idiot.

You can burn your bases hot waxing them, but you would have to be an idiot to do it.

Waxing actually helps improve a base and the base will stay in good condition for longer and get faster and faster the more you wax it.

I tend to wax mine every 3 rides or so, or more if the weather changes darmatically.

trolol hell no you should wax ur skis like every 3-4 days of riding, i do it every two and i p-tex once a month.

yeah whoever that was was bullshitting you. waxing when done right (which is not hard at all) is really good for the skis and fills the **pores, creating a better sliding surface. also the heat does not burn the base unless it it set too high and you are an idiot. why do you think ski racers focus so much on the waxing? The heat with the wax actually cleans out the pores by expanding them then fills them with new wax, kinda like washing your face in a way. i wax mine every 3-4 days and p-tex whenever they need it, and if i can't hot wax i at least throw in a all temp rub on wax just for speed. also when my season is over i hot wax them with extra wax and leave it on, this keeps the bases clean and in good condition. it also prevents them from drying out or rotting, and prevents rust from forming on the edges due to condensation

that shop employee is a fucking idiot!!! Might I suggest to never go there again, if they dont know shit about waxing then what else do that not know how to do, Mount a pair of skis, Fit a boot properly, or even do a proper base grind and repair! i would avoid that shop at all costs

Alright thanks for confirming my thoughts. The guy just made me a little unsure because he's been working at that shop for around 20 years. I shall continue my normal waxing habits.

Pretty much the dumbest thing I've ever heard. World cup race skis get waxed literally every day and they stay in pretty alright shape. That guy is out to lunch.
