when hot waxing skis is it necessary to use those solutions that remove the wax first or can you take the ski as is and iron on the wax. I might buy an iron but i didn't know if i needed all of those wax removing solutions. What all will i need besides the iron and the wax

 
no unless you are a racers anal about waxing his skis, just wax your skis when the bottoms start getting dry and whiteish. all you need is a cheap ass iron from goodwill for like 10 bucks and a bar of wax plus a wax scraper that will set you back at least 4 dollars. just when you are using the iron use the lowest heat setting that still melts the wax

mabey if ur a die hard racer, that will do anything to make ur skis go faster, but for twins and stuff i wouldnt worry about it. just scrape of as much as u can and add another layer

im torn between if youre going to wax, do it right ... and fuck waxing. how about you splurge and spend an extra 10 bucks on a horse hair brush and then just brush out the skis a couple times when you wax.

ya i used to use a brush and everything but honestly it doesnt make a fucking difference to anyone that isnt a racer, just wax in on and do a good job scraping it and thats enough

yeah but it is nice to put a coat on your twins every once and a while.

-all temp wax

-scraper

Just make sure they wax aint smoking bec then its bad for your base but so is rails so just be able to melt the wax but dont leave the iron on your base too long bec you can get bubbles.

i use citrious wax remover. works alright but isnt nessisary. if they are really dirty thougfh you should wax and remove and wax again

i use a wax remover every couple times i wax just to get the old stuff off and open up the pores a bit to make room for new wax, i'm not saying you have to but i probably helps with base maintenance

if your bases are dirty, and you are not using a stripper, just wax em up, and scrape them off immediately (don't let the wax setup, get it while its still liquid). The wax should float the dirty and sludge.

The point to stripping and cleaning your bases is to make sure that crap doesn't get into the pores of the skis. That's really it.

 
Ok, I used to wax skis for a livng and its not just for 'hard core' racers. If you don't routinely wax your skis, the bases dry out (they turn white). This means w\they will hold less for for longer. Think of a base like the pores of yours skin. When you melt wax on to it with an iron, it seeps into these'pores' and get locked there. If you don't do this often and your bases are dry two things happen. 1) your skis will be sticky by the afternoon .. this is worse on warmer days since there's more water in the snow. 2) you'll have to get your bases ground to remove the dried out base material.

 
and yeah, you can use a Good Will iron, just make sure it has no holes in it and that you change change the temperature. But you should use wax remover to remove the old dry wax from the 'pores' or else some will be full and won't accept new wax. You only need to lay down enough wawx to cover the base, then scrape it ALL off, all you want is the wax in the 'pores' no more.

 
that 'wonderfluid' stuff that you just apply, let dry and then even out a bit has worked real nice for me between hot waxings...

DSpin7x is absolutly wrong and and indiot for thinking so ;)... best way to conserve wax is to take ur wax bar and rub it on the bottom of ur skis, leaving a thin layer of wax. next bust our ur iron and go over all the wax making sure u liquify the wax. one completed u can try and scrape excess wax off, but their probably wont be any or very little. use some cork to smooth it out and bam... like new

actually he is right, and a lot of the hot wax companies are recommending ''crayoning'' on the wax, and then hitting it with an iron, and not dripping it on anymore.

 
I was trying to say d-loc has it right, reason is that dripping on the wax will fill in the structure (when the wax is spread out), hence why it is important to brushout the skis after waxing. The advantage to crayoning the wax, then applying an iron, is the coat if wax is substantially smaller, and less likely to completely fill in the structure. It is a combination of wax, base material and structure that allow the ski to slide.
