I've never hit a real hand rail before and I was wondering if you need to wax the rail first or if it slides okay on its own...

Depends on the rail. Just test it by rubbing your skis on it.

waxing a handrail will make it stickier. wax a concrete ledge, rub a metal handrail with piece of wood like a 2x4 or just your ski edge
