wax

Wow, I feel like a real noob asking this, but is it really that important to have wax on your skis? I know it makes you go faster, but is that the only reason to use wax?

wax also helps condition the bases so they dont dry out which in turn makes you go faster so i guess speed is the only real obvious reward of waxing your skis.

yes wax helps, but if you don't use the right wax for the temp. then itt can slow you down more than speed you up. just make sure you are useing the right color for the day's weather. also snow matters on wax. wet snow is going to get a different wax than say way dry fluffy snow, or even summer skiing.

The way I look at it, it can't hurt, and it takes like five minutes every week. You will be happy when all your buddies are coming up short on that big jump, or are telling you to wait up after you coast by them on a trail. It also protects your bases a little better from rocks and black stuff in the snow.

When you assume, you make an ass out of u and me.(think about it)

'My knee hurts' (Jeff Merat after grinding a lunch table for an hour instead of sitting in the ski patrol shack for his torm mcl and acl which he got earlier that day.)

'I'm not asking for any help, just mabe for you to get off your ass.'(my dad)

you get to rub hot wax into a long hard object. that should be all the incentive you need.

'Dude, check out this nasty gouge.'

'Your mom has a nasty gouge.'

im just gonna sling crystal meth so i dont have to get a real job and can afford to ski, with the way my senior year is goin though thats probably one of my few options

After reading that last post by 221 and then seeing his icon, I'm starting to get a little bit worried....

yes, wax helps a shitload. But you gotta do it right. Rub on hardly works. Gotta use an iron, scraper, nylon and brass brushes. our skis will slide much faster.

Nylon and brass brushes? What're those for? All I've ever done is use a scraper and then buff it with a rag.

well, before you wax, you use the brass and nylon to get old wax out, they also heat it up and open up the pores on the base. After you wx, you use them to, to put some stucture into the wax.

oh yeah, buff it baby. buff it for daddy.

Hey this might be another stupid question but what kind of wax do you guys use on your skis? I always use my buddy's wax on my skis and I have no idea what brand it is. Hot Wax by the way.

Toko, it a old brand, so it good. There are several types, for different temperatures and preferences.

---------------

I use toko and swix, and a few different additives when needed. Both have a wide variety of waxes for different conditions and a few choices for all weather waxes as well.

Yes brushes are good, but they each have their own pourpose.

Here is what I do.

1. use the brass brush to structure the base.

2. then clean it with a base cleaner.

3. Wax with a hot iron with no holes. use one stroke per pass. keep even speed. keep doing this till there is about a 6in trail of wet wax after the iron. this is just a suggestion. use best judgement. if the tops of the ski are crazy hot stop.

4. You should wait a few hours to scrape. wax at night then wake up a bit early to finish. if flying, wax at home then scrape at destination.

5. Scrape. after you scrape as much wax as will come off

6. use a horse hair or nylon (soft brissle) brush to get extra wax out of the structured base.

7. also scrape any wax off of the side of the edges.

8. putem on your feet.

9. watch your friends case the 50 footer while you land smooth cause of your fast skis.
