^hey Lawrence any suggestions for something submergable to around 500m and be well suited to wear workin in a level one trauma ER? With a budget 1-2k?
Are you even allowed to wear watches in there? Ah well, not sure on the rules in other countries.
So regardless of that, your criteria are so vague that I could present thousands of different watches. And one is a bit arbitrary, why would you want it to be submergible to 500m? Anything beyond 300m is already entering a realm of specialist offshore oilfield drilling divers and practical factors make watch depth ratings of more than 1,000 m into marketing curiosities. Unless you are James Cameron, then you strap your "Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA CHALLENGE" on the outside of your submersible when visiting the Challenger Deep do note that that little fucker was anything but little, more like roughly the seize of Hertfordshire.
If you want a basic watch that is sturdy get a do get a diver but things are not that simple, there are tons of companies around the world who make them with quartz (forget those) and mechanical movements. Being a traditionalist I will say: SWISS above anything else but things are not that black and white and there are a few great timepieces made by non-Swiss companies.
The gold standard and above your budget is the venerable Rolex "Sub" (the nickname for Oyster Perpetual Submariner)
A 61-year old design and the most counterfeited watch in history. In addition also the most "borrowed" design by other companies. Hold the gold and diamond versions meant for silly posers and admire the simplicity of the original steel "base" model.
Also don’t buy new, buy vintage, they look better aged anyway.
And now I could begin to list 40 other watches with ease, all with their own merits and downfalls.
Do you want a chronograph, steel, PVD, ceramic, 38mm, 45mm, Swiss, auto, heritage, style….that list also goes on as far as they eye can see.
Take some time to dwell on watch sites such as Hodinkee, to figure out what you want, there is never one perfect watch, watches are also art and emotion – not just wrist gadgets that can be chosen by merely comparing specifications, for then you might as well get the Seiko SKX007K2, a soulless device meant to be nothing more then a Rolex clone for about 200 bucks.
