Ive recently started really investing in a wristwatch collection since I kinda need them for work/theyre rad.

Mechanical toys are pretty fun to look at.

The engineering involved in high end watches is amazing. Would live to look at the inside of some.

Even affordable mechanical pieces have some pretty damn good stuff going on inside of them. I have an old Soviet dress watch with a super impressive automatic movement..

You can get a really nice automatic for around or even less than 100 USD from Seiko... Lookup "Seiko 5" theyre all pretty damn nice. I have a Military Field watch Seiko 5 that I totally love. Has a see-thru back so you can see the internals moving around too.

I also have a soviet made Sekonda - wish it had a see through back because the inside is gorgeous on that one. got that one for like 40$ on etsy.

Thanks. I have actually been eyeing those Seiko 5s for a while. Potentially treat myself to one at some point

Yeah, you can get one for a lot less than some of those social media hype branded quartz watches...

Those actually always turned me off of watches because they all seemed like chinese made junk that I could buy for 5 bucks (which you usually can, without the logo..)

When I learned you could get real, legit mechanical watches with soul and history, it totally changed my perception.

I got into watches after seeing a couple watch & listen podcasts. I love looking at the movement on my seiko 5, its like having a tiny engine on your wrist.

I got into them over the winter when I started watching watchmaking videos while researching ways to work on my film cameras.

I definitely want to build my own custom watch out of pre-made parts.

Those are OG as fuck dude. I have one and I wear it when I need an alarm. Cost me like 4 bucks!

haha I was kinda kidding, but I have a few different watches and I wear my f91 probably 360 days a year. I used to hate wearing a watch and only got it because I was running XC in high school and my coach made me get a watch and wanted the cheapest slimmest one I could get at walmart. I've had mine for like 10 years now and it now has a made in Bozeman $50 gore-tex nato strap that nearly wouldn't fit past the tiny springbar opening intended to only fit the original plastic strap.

Found this site the other day and really want to get another one and do some mods to it like this:

Dude there no shame with watches...

unless you buy one to look cool

I have a Gucci watch that was given to me by my grandpa that I've only worn on first dates so I look fancy.

I carefully filed away the black coating at the edges of my Timex Expedition to reveal the brass so that it matches the wear of my Olympus OM-1 film camera and looks cool.

Watches look cool, does that mean I wear one to look cool? I dunno but my wrist feels naked without one even though i'm the least timely person ever.

Somewhere lurking in the darkest depths of your bedroom, there are several of these lying in wait to loudly attack with the sound of old alarms from time past. A true capsule of another day, with every aggressive beep reminding you of who you once were. You would think that eventually they would die, that maybe you would eventually find peace in this life, but you'd be wrong. The half life on these is far beyond anything seen on this planet. If some nuclear waste ridden animal was Cristopher Reeving stemcells it couldn't come near the old watches. After we're all dead, and our society has collapsed, the first of the OG watches will finally stand still. Eventually as the years pass and earth shifts, more and more will fall, until one day....

Also watches are cool. I'll probably never get one at this point but they're fascinating.

Wheres the calculator?

This is whatcha need.

I would honestly love a calculator watch. I have to do a lot of quick math at work and would literally be able to do "off-the-cuff" calculations.

I have been very tempted by the calculator myself. Pretty nerdcore lol . Probably be pretty useful since I am always opening up a new basic calculator on my screen and then losing the tab because I keep way too many windows open

Iv always wanted to get a watch with an altimeter

Oris makes a Big Pilot with a mechanical altimeter. It's pretty large to make that happen, but it's super cool.

Ironically I was just reading an article about altimeter watches ,those too expensive for me but nice. I did find this one that looks good for 220$

Dude fuck yea. Brassing your watch to match your camera is tight as fuck.

Seiko has some cool stuff. Longines is pretty decently priced too, at least compared to Rolex etc.

Im not even that into watches but this youtube channel is mind blowing:

Dude right?

I was watching some of those videos when I made this thread. Mesmerizing as hell.

I think the coolest thing is almost all the watches on there have some crazy cool story... like the one named after the guy who lost his leg while diving to find a lost thermonuclear weapon under the sea... and then 4 years later became the first African American master diver in the US navy’s history - with 1 leg. In 1970 - back when public schools were still being desegregated...

I've been into collecting watches for about 8 years now, this summer my Apple Watch came off on a cliff jump and it turned out to be a blessing cause I forgot how nice it was to rotate through nice watches.

978028.jpegMy Timex Expedition with faux patina. Don’t wear it enough to actually make it have some real wear

Sleeping on a friends couch and getting the hourly from an old rando watch somewhere in the living room. Thing will still be telling time in 50k years.

Here's my Seiko 5 on a nato strap

My Sorna World Time

In the 70's these had Swiss movements but ones like this one, which is from the 2000's, have a Chinese automatic.

Lastly is my baller on budget watch, the Timex Indiglo

Anyone have any "Grail watches"? (I guess thats a term used in the watch community..)

Id probably say an original black dial Strela 3017 chronograph (The first watch in space), or an Omega Speedmaster (first on the moon) and probably a Heuer Solunar tidal phase watch (though they go for fuckin thousands lol)

Went to Tokyo this last week and picked one of these bad boys up in a second hand shop for a remarkable deal.

second hand sweeps so smoothly!

I've had this guy for the past 12 years. About halfway through something went wrong and Lacrosse sent me a brand new watch. Apparently you can still get them new for around $100. Altimeter+barometer+compass and weather is pretty cool to have in a watch you never have to charge.

59.99 free shipping on ebay, might purchase this

I really need a new GPS watch for running/biking/XC skiing. Are apple watches worth it or should I just go with a Garmin one?

apple watches are more of a daily wear watch, not so great for activities.

Go suunto or garmin for sportz

I did not expect to see a watch thread on NS. It’s cool to see you diving right into it realizing there is so much more out there than all the social media junk.

If you’re looking for mechanical watches similar to Seiko I would also recommend Orient, which is owned by Seiko. They don’t quite have Seiko name recognition but you can almost always find them on sale at Longislandwatch.com.

Dude, last week I was in Tokyo where my girl lives and she lives right down the street from this watch shop where apparently Orient was started like 100 years ago or whatever.

the Orient Defender and the Bambino are super popular affordable automatics... basically everything they offer is affordable, classy, and good quality.

I admittedly didn’t read everything before posting so I just went back through and saw the king Seiko you picked up in Tokyo. Those hi beat movements are wild. Do you roughly what year it is?

I’ve owned two orients and gifted a bambino. All punch above their weight in fit and finish except for the garbage leather straps they use. I haven’t personally had my hands on a bracelet but I would imagine it’s similar quality level.
