I borrowed the new Mack Dawg film Picture THis from a friend the other day and it got me thinking about the ski films I've seen this year. Idea did have a few good shots but it pretty much looked like it was made by a bunch of junior high students. You or I could have made that movie with a $20,000 budget.

Picture this is just in a whole different league. The cinematography is lightyears ahead of what anyone else is doing. I just don't get how companies can go out and be proud of something that just isn't up to snuff and more importantly how people can get so stoked on it. Ski movie companies just aren't pushing themselves like Mack Dawg. Look at Yeah Dude. A third of the movie was comp footage. I hate seeing comp footage in movies. It's so fucking lame. Then there is MSP who has done that same fucking Whistler shoot with the huge jump and the sunset. It was cool three years ago but it's been done now. I want to see something new. So that's my rant. I'm not buying a ski movie this year in protest because I don't think any of them are worth it.

I'm pretty sure that MDP has an exponentially higher budget than any ski production company, allowing them to do much more in their film

what you have to realize is that the two films are completly and totally different, but at the same time awesome in there own respects. While mack dawg can afford to have all the top name pros and a fleet of HD cams and tools to get new unique shots, Idea simply goes about trying to represent skiing as we see it everyday, just going out riding with friends and having a damn good time doing it, and in that respect (along with some new and revolutionary tricks) they made a damn good film. Idea is also one of the first of its kind for skiing, while snowboarding has had time to perfect this kind of movie with things like the community project and people, we still are in the first stages of this and hopefully Idea will serve to spark more and better movies with a similar concept in mind. Support core skiing man, we need it.

Idea did not try to have the most high tech cutting edge camera equipment and angles and points of view. Idea is just skiing. That's all it is, people skiing. And that's what I like about it.

But it's boring. I've had it for two months and I think I've watched it less than ten times. I've watched picture this more than ten times and I've only a had it for a week.

the cinematography in Picture This was dope but i really didnt like the editing that much, the whole movie didnt have all that great of a flow. Idea on the otherhand had great flow and was just tons of fun to watch, it gets me so pumped on skiing.

The Beauty and significance of IDEA is something that is either understood, or it isn't. I'm sorry you can't perceive how great a film it is, you are really missing out.

goddamned n00b.

Picture This isn't even that good.

Optimistic, Thanks Brain and We're People Too are WAYYYYY better.

Idea isn't about cinamatography, it's about progressing skiing

Picture this had Great quality and Great filming but besides the new wall rides they weren't pushing thier sport to completely new levels

bringing nose butters to almost every aspect of backcountry, pep's attempted 540 out of a tree (shit was futuristic), its opening doors for a new kind of skiing instead of just packing as many spins/flips into a seggy as you can.

I acctually really liked Yeah Dude. I was happy about there very non-poor boyz feel cause I was really getting sick of it

Given that snowboarding is a larger industry, its no surprise mackdawg had the budget to pull of the shots they did.

Considering that picture this got a lot of what they did from the collective and roam (freeride mtb videos) I was not as blown away as you were.

That said most ski films do suck, but MSP does good shooting and Stop Go Stop has some of the most impressive editing I have seen in a sports film period.

I wont deny picture this was better than most ski films, I guess what I am trying to say here in more words than I need to is:

Who cares?

You have four options to do in response to your realization:

Go out and try to do something new with ski filming
Go out and just ski
Go into the shower and cry yourself to sleep
Post on the internet about your aforementioned stunning realization

I would have picked the first three before the last one, but I guess thats what separates us.

Haha ahren...

But this is a topic that so many people disagree on. Picture this has a seriosuly inviting aspect of completely clear HD and this happens with their literal truck-load of equipment. It's extremely enjoyable to watch in that aspect. Idea is exactly what the other kids in this thread explained it to be. I'm sorta on the fence about it. But in the end im pretty sure i'd take picture this over idea.

ok the butters were cool even though they have been done before.  the 540 out of the tree although sick was a complete accident

agreed. idea was cool and is deff on the frontier of ski flicks and then you see picture this and reaalize boarders are light years ahead of ski media creativity. its annoying. msp & pbp a lot of times are disgraceful

yeah im a snowboarder
I liked We're People Too better tehn picture this... and that is the low buget mac dawg movie. Picture this was overdone. If you want really good movie with really good cinematography watch any IsenSeven Film or watch Follow me Around.

"You or I could have made that movie with a $20,000 budget. "

The most ignorant claim i've ever read on NS.

I think why most people disregard Idea is because it isn't as "cutting edge". The cinematography in Idea does just that. It produces a completely different emotional tonality. Instead of being blown away by every cut it gives a sense of journey and exploration. I think that most viewers become impatient with Idea's slow pace because we're so used to being pleased by the showcase of pros going huge.

Picture This is a very admirable movie but i don't think you can compare the two. They aim for a completely different appeal.

The fact that so many kids on this site hate on Idea just reaffirms it's greatness in my mind, trendwhores don't even comprehend what is cool till it's already played out.

Idea makes me remember good times, powder, and having fun with the people that mean a lot to me. I can't ask anything more from a ski video.

idea < picture this i really didnt like idea, it was boring, picture this was amazing, lightyears ahead for sure

Word. Picture This wasn't even close to the first people to use these filming techniques. Sorry, but none of that filming was revolutionary, still cool and fresh just not innovative.

Im a hater, an it's not because I'm biased against boarders. I just didn't like it. I love snowboard movies, but I thought that the movie was a horrible follow up to the teaser.

Here is a link to jeremy jones' part in picture this and there is a little jp walker at the end. The last trick jp does at the very end is the sickest thing i have ever seen.

Picture This is incredible....it makes most ski movies this year look really gay. A few things that piss me off of about this years ski movies 1) Idea was good, different, but lacked quality footage, yeah there were sick tricks but some of it was unimpressive 2) Yeah Dude, wtf?? why all the dumb voiceovers, that takes so much away from the movie, good skiing again but all the useless non-skiing jibberish, garbage 3)Beleive good movie....no complaints......not as good as picture this....obviously these are my basic opinions but skiing needs a serious film with epic cinemetography ans super sick skiing minus the gayness that is only 30 mins long...

no. you wanna talk about epic snowboard movies... Ubermovie. seriously, the most insane shots, riding, editing, vibe, length. fucking amazing. picture this has nothing on ubermovie

I'm pretty sure pep was really trying to do that 5 off of the tree, it wasn't an accident.

and what about andy's sw cork 3? While it wasn't technically groundbreaking or anything, it was pretty sick, not many people are doing those.

i was ripped last nite and noticed the overusage of the film technique where the cam is steady moving horizontally with some type of blurred out trees in the foreground

but yeah its better than any ski film ive seen for sure- those double wall rides... yum

exactly. the first time I saw ROAM I thought it was the sickest movie ever. and it still is. I watch it on almost a weekly basis. it's so good, and it basically made me want to bike. but now I see the same stuff, and it's not "revolutionary"

oh, and zipline cams are sick
