Was Candide's failed big bertha attempt the only attempt?

I talk about this monster kicker:

(Other angle, same attempt)

Was Candide's attempt in this video the first attempt and only attempt?

There is a whole segment in Few Words about Big Bertha, with footage of people clearing the jump. I can't remember if those shots are from earlier years in the Candide Invitational before this exact jump, but it's worth watching because the amount of hang time was just ridiculous.

it was a different jump. candide, if i remember correctly, was the only person to hit the jump that he had his terrible crash on. he was guinea pigging it because no one else would, it was too big.

Well props to candide thovex for always guinea pigging the big stuff for everyone, he did the same for chad's gap.

yeah, the one they showed people actually throwing tricks on was a previous year's one i believe. still absolutely huge and crazy but yeah the one he got injured on he was guinea pigging. when they see candide come up short guinea pigging a jump and break his back, most people choose not to try it out afterward

That's what I thought too. If anyone else had hit it and cleared it after Candide's crash, there would have been footy of it out there somewhere. I wonder if they destroyed it right after the crash. In the U.S. they would have roped it off and catted it ASAP; no telling what they would have done there.

yeah he definitely didn't christen it. chad did. you know, the guy who hit it first? gets the gap named after him? candide blew everyone's mind though when he d-spin 7d the gap.

hint to everyone that didn't know any of this info: go watch few words. it is such a great movie.

well, since it's europe they smoked a bunch of rolled cigarettes, built the lip up a bit more, and left a sign up that said "jump ahead" and called it a day

but yeah re: jennifergarner's post about chad's: correct, chad zurinskas himself guineaed it a few times and came up short and candide showed up and cleared it (i forget if it was on his first try or not. he definitely came up short a few times the next year right before d7ing it)

but i gotta say this is a stupid post, though factual. the forum post that criticizes someone else but doesnt offer any more information is such a stupid trope

Who in their right mind would try it after watching that slam....

First of all, to get to a level high enough where you are attending an invitational like that, you have to be pretty crazy..

Second, Im sure chads gap wasnt cleared on the first hit.

You don't watch one of the best skiers in the world suffer what could have been a career ending injury and then feel good about your chances of achieving what he couldn't

I have talked to Andreas Håtveit about a massive jump Candid had on one of his invitationals, but i don't know if it's this one. He said that he(Håtveit) and Candid was the only ones to do any kind of trick on it. All the others where to terrified. This was around 10 years ago. But as I said i don't know if it was Bertha:P

At least one other skier hit it. Maybe a snowboarder as well. I remember seeing the photo sequence back when it was all happening, but I doubt I could find it now. Candide hit it a day or so after those attempts, was probably the 3rd person to hit it, and then they closed the jump.

If I was a top level pro and I saw a jump that ate Candide for breakfast I'd walk the fuck away too.

I'm pretty darn sure that nobody else ever tried to hit that year's Big Bertha jump, at least not when it was the size of Candide's try (130 feet?)

There are plenty of shots from other years at the Candide Invitational on similar but smaller jumps.

I went to the Candide Invite in 2006 and a nutty session went down on the Big Bertha jump. Jossi Wells was like 15 and he was the first to drop in switch. Jossi, Dumont, JF Houle and some French dudes were all killing it; Jossi doing switch 5s and 7s, JF Houle doing flatspin 9s to the bottom, Dumont stinky cork 5s.

If I remember correctly, Candide crashed pretty bad and decided to close the jump for everyone. Then he went up a few days later for a private session and did a switch 10 over it. Rumor was he didn't want anyone else to have the best trick on the jump.

the year candide broke his back on the big bertha he wasn't the first to try it

it's manu pernet and baptiste collomb-patton that tried it first and both of them didn't cleared it. they both knuckled but didn't hurt themselves as hard as candide

that year the flat of the jump was 144 feet which was way to big for a step down

I remember having a sequence of this trick in poster form on my wall back in the day.

Just watched Few Words for the first time and was blown away by the size of Big Bertha. Has anyone built a park jump that big since? I don't think I've ever seen a jump larger than 130 feet since then, which is probably for the best.

he didn't clear the jump because in few words they talked about how it was snow was getting slower and grabbier as they day went on. He skied to the top of the jump 3 times and bailed cause he didn't have enough speed.

This guy would anally destroy big Bertha no problem. Sorry don't know how to embed.

That is so big! The idea of building a jump that big is crazy enough, but you are correct making it a step down adds an extra chunk of insanity.
