Warren miller hates newschool kids?

from his videos ive seen and from his interview on newschoolers where he basically said that newschool sking was nothing special compared to skiing in the old days. Maybe hes mad about 14 year old kids these days being much better skiers than the old people in most of his videos i dont know he seems pretty bitter to me though

from the ns interview with warren miller

Mike Rogge:
The past fifteen years has given birth

a new style of skiing with the creation of the twin-tip ski and today

there is a huge push to get skiing half pipe as an Olympic event. What

is your opinion of this new style of skiing?

Warren Miller: It stretches the boundaries of ski ability and is in a 100% prepared track, but the only opinion is in the air around it.

basically he seems to diss really hard on newschool saying we are all trying to do the same thing, i dont know what his problem is

yeah, they just use his voiceovers from older films...I don't think he dislikes newshool skiing, but he doesn't like it either.

he hasnt been a part of his own films for quite a while now so dont be tricked by those new seggys popping up.

i think hes like every old dude out there, he doesnt get it and doesnt care enough to learn about it. which is chill because well, hes old enough to do whatever the fuck he wants.

you are confusing newschool and its roots. Newschool comes from mogulers and aerialists. The day Mike Douglas popped a cork 7, he knew something was coming. People just picked up on it. Aerialists got interested, a misty is a rudy, but early. Off axis jumps originated from flips in pencil steeze.

Now the movement is back. Take Dumont with those flips and twists for example. Its just like in the US open 2000 with tanner and the gang were busting flip variations. I the vid is in youtube.

Warren doesnt hate newschool all he is saying that newschool is like the oldschool. Also he points out todays newschool is coming back to oldschool

Um, I think he's saying that airtime is the only thing people are focusing on. Which is kinda true in halfpipe, when you are going down/up transitions, nobody cares. Its only about the air around you, i.e., airtime. Which is cool, but he probobly thinks skiing should be on snow. I agree, though I think halfpipe is fun and stuff, but yeah, it is repetative.

No - I think he is referring to the support for newschool skiing being restricted to those who DO it and those that are involved with it in some way or another.

i remember simon's huuuge step up 180 was a big focus in one of his films a few years ago..the name seems to be avoiding me at the moment tho

this year his movie had way more, newschool oriented stuff then in the past... i think it could be because he doesnt have complete control anymore tho

as some already said, Warren Miller has no affiliation with Warren Miller Entertainment.  He gave the business to his son, who sold it to Time Warner,

As for his quote from that interview, he isn't dissing.  I'd take it as he has respect for it.  He says "it stretches the boundaries of ski ability."  I would take that as, this newer style of skiing shows that there is more to skiing than just hauling ass and making turns, and Skiing's past has set up this future (just like everything else...wow).  Old freestylers did what they wanted to do, which was passed through the generations to today.

So I would say that he's giving respect to "newschool", but no more than he respects racing, moguls, or dumby races.

well idk think he hates em cause they were in his videos....plus where did we all come from in the first place...

i really dont think we was trying to diss newschool skiing i just dont think he cares much at all

yea in i the movie storm or fifty one of the two he has a 4-5 min long park and urban segment and he was actually supporting them. deff dosnt hate newschool skiers

and he's right!

double flips as you see them today were being done about 8 years ago (riskyflip). even then multiple twisting flips are nothing new.

switch ups on rails...see Baronowski's seg in Parental Advisory Vol 1 (circa 1999)

a lot of you kids think everything you see is new and progressive but most things have been done before.

i guarantee most of the people he is filming are probably 10 times better skiers than most 14 year old "newschoolers". just cause you can slide rails and do tricks on jumps doesnt make you a good skier anywhere outside the park.

he's old. Movies kinda suck but are a ski industry tradition. Only time i watch Warren Miller is at the Flynn Theatre east coast premiers.

wow you're dumb.

but in any case, Warren Miller is pretty indifferent to it, so yeah. He just realizes that we are going back to our roots.

warren miller wouldnt put freeskiing in his movies until it became popular because he claimed it was just a fad

no, not really man, like the one film (i cant remember the name right now) it came out in like 2005, they took a bunch of freestylists to the backcountry and they got wasted

what hes saying is that its pushing the sport in new directions and its in a completely man made environment. hes pointing out that although the sport is progressing, part of the fun is going somewhere that nobody has been before and that part of skiing is being lost.

dude, are you going to let us know when you graduate from elementary school so we can all not come to your party?

I'm stoked you guys liked the Warren Interview.

Personally I think Warren saw the birth of mogul skiing, the rise, boom, and eventual fall of mogul skiing as a popular and progressive sport. It's fair to say he has a better outsider/insider perspective on our sport. Maybe he's right. Maybe we are so focused on the Olympics, we're selling out our values, and forgetting our roots but at the same time we deserved the money, respect, and notoriety other sports achieve when making it into the Olympics.

I don't think Warren hates "newschool kids." It goes against everything he's ever preached in his movies such as freedom, fun, and living life to the fullest, three things "newschool kids" embrace and embody.

also hating on Warren Miller is hating the man that inspired many of the people that started this sport is almost sacrilegious. Old Warren Miller flicks were all I had growing up. Please don't disrespect a man that inspired thousands of people to go to the slopes and pursue their dreams (I'm one of them).

Warren is legit. Every saturday down here in podunk JAcksonville FL we get a Warren Miller flick on our local travel guide channel. His movies are intertaining and show the fun aspect of skiing. And more importantly glamourise my favorite sport, freeskiing. I love this man.

warren miller is sick...... i've always gone to his premiers in the fall, and yes, at times they can be corny and lame, but they are the only ski film company that embodies every aspect of skiing, they're not a jib flick, or a big mountain flick, or a race flick, they creat a balance, so that no matter who you are, they have something for you......

You have absolutely no skill at interpreting people if you think that Warren Miller is dissing the "newschool" with that comment. As Mahre said above, this comment shows how Warren Miller has respect for what we do. "To push the boundaries of skiing" is something that deserves respect, and Warren gave it.
