War with iran

War talk is in the air again, and because of the looming November election, it has to be taken extra seriously.

The latest to warn about a Bush War III is former Democratic senator and failed presidential contender Gary Hart, long an expert on national security issues, who says that targeting drones and special forces targeting specialists are already operating over and inside Iran, sizing up and locating as many as 400 targets for U.S. cruise missiles and bombers. This is in anticipation of an aerial strike which my own investigating suggests could come as early as late October (See the article "War Signals" in www.The Nation.com )

Of course, this could all be bluster--a Karl Rove/Dick Cheney strategy to get the public all worked up they way they used to get over color-coded terror alerts until that strategy wore out its effectiveness through overuse. But the actual sending of Special Forces units into harm's way in Iran, and the preparation of Navy battle groups for deployment to the Iran Theater, make it more probable that an actual attack is in the offing. Word that regular military units are being prepared for third tours to the region, that the administration is changing the guidelines to make longer call-ups of National Guard units for longer and more frequent overseas tours of active duty, and that units in Iraq are being given stop-loss orders to delay their return home also suggest something major may be in the offing. Otherwise logic would lead to the expectation that the administration would be announcing a reduction in troop levels in Iraq before Election Day, as was past practice.

Ordinarily one would say that the real sign of an imminent attack would be a convening of Congress to approve a use of force authorization, or perhaps an attempt in the United Nations to win endorsement for an attack from the UN Security Council, but clearly this is not happening. And for good reason. Bush would never succeed in winning Security Council approval for a military action against Iran, particularly after insulting the council members by the massive package of lies that he and Colin Powell presented the last time he sought such a vote--for an attack on Iraq--in 2003. Nor would he likely be given the go-ahead by Congress this time around, with all of the House and a third of the Senate facing re-election on November 7 by an electorate that has grown weary of war, angry at a half trillion dollars wasted, and sick about the thousands of flag-draped coffins and broken GIs returning home, with nothing to show for it all but two dysfunctional, war-torn former countries in the Middle East.

The problem is that Bush, who has trashed the Constitution to the point that it is now little more than a historical artifact, doesn't think he needs approval from the UN or even from the Congress to embark on his most dangerous, bloody and immoral war yet.

According to this confirmed White House criminal (Bush has been found guilty by the US Supreme Court of violating the US War Crimes Statutes and by a Federal District Court of violating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and the Fourth Amendment), he has the power as "commander in chief in time of war" to act in violation of both Constitution and law, as he sees fit.

The "war" in question is the so-called "War on Terror." The title "Commander in Chief" derives from the wording of Article II of the Constitution, in which the Founding Fathers said that a president would simultaneously be the top general of the military. Bush claims, with the backing of his mob attorney, Alberto Gonzales, the head of what used to be known of quaintly as the Justice Department, that when Congress, in the wake of the 9-11 attacks in 2001, voted an Authorization for the Use of Military Force against Al Qaeda--a measure that was meant to give the go-ahead for an attack on Osama Bin Laden and his Taliban hosts in Afghanistan--it was also giving him the power to act as Commander-in-Chief in a war on terror that would have no end and that would extend anywhere and everywhere in the world and within the borders of the U.S.

He claims, in other words, that the October 2001 Congressional AUMF effectively made him a generalissimo, a dictator, for as long as there were terrorists foreign or domestic trying to harm Americans or American interests.

We need only note how Bush, in his address at the UN General Assembly last week, was careful to describe the leaders of Iran as "supporters of terror." Be warned: this was a deliberately chosen linguistic construct which means he is asserting his right to attack them as part of that phony "war" on terror, based upon the long-outdated and grossly misrepresented 2001 AUMF.

Unless the American people and their ostensible representatives in Congress act quickly to make it clear that the 2001 AUMF does not apply to an attack on Iran, and that it did not make the president a dictator with the power to make war at will, I'm betting that we'll be at war with Iran before Election Day.

Let's be clear. This has nothing to do with a threat to America. Even by the most generous of interpretations of administration-hyped "evidence" about Iran's alleged nuclear weapons development efforts, Iran could not have a nuclear weapon for four years or more, with some estimates saying ten to 15 years. That's plenty of time to mount a successful diplomatic campaign to block it.

No, incredibly this is all about a domestic election. To put the matter bluntly, we have a president who is willing to put tens of thousands of American soldiers' lives at risk, and hundreds of thousands of innocent Iranian lives at risk, simply to avoid having the Congress fall into the hands of the Democratic Party.

Why would Bush be willing to do such a thing, against the advice of his generals, against the wishes of the American people, and against all logic and decency?

Clearly he is afraid--afraid that a Democratic Congress will finally start calling him to account for his accumulated crimes against the nation and the American People. That's why he is desperately trying to get the Republican-led Congress--while it still can--to pass legislation retroactively exonerating him and his subordinates for their criminal violations of law and Constitution. That's why he is racing around the country raising money for candidates--even including liberal Republicans whose positions he privately abhors.

At this point, all this president cares about is saving his own sorry ass.

It's a disheartening spectacle, but hardly surprising for a man who worked so hard and shamelessly to protect that same ass during the Vietnam War by joining the National Guard and then checking a box saying he would not be available for overseas assignment.

He must not be allowed to get away with this ultimate crime of a war for personal gain.

i didn't even read that, but when i saw that this thread was made by FuckThePolice i knew it was probably bullshit.

Please, stop making threads.

lol me too, just curious though... 'Bush War III: Going to War to Save His Own Ass' is supposed to mean he is trying to salvage the little respect from the american's? because his time is almost up.

AAHAHAHHAA. Anyone whos name is fuck the police clearly doesn't have the education to write a thread like that. You just got owned man. Go copy and paste some more shit onto threads.

whats yours guys's problems? read the thread, its just some dudes opinion, and from what i can tell its pretty legit.

American's are soo fucked. You guys keep drawing a huge line between each other democrat/ republican, one day its all just gonna fall apart.  You gotta listen to each other.

FUCK THE WAR AND FUCK YOU my sisters husband is in fucking iraq searching cars for fucking bombs and its fucking gay so FUCK THE WAR

i am saying the opinion is legit, its not making up any hard facts its just giving an opinion on somehting, there are no lies in in it...its opinion....therefore it is legit to read and think about.....you don't have to believe it, its all shit, all american politics is shit.

No one is going to read anything you have to say now man. You might as well do us all a great favor and leave. You have no credibility.

youre assuming that we send in mad ground troops. if we were to hypothetically keep it in the air and not worry about... say, civilian casualties... then it would be game over. done done and done.

the US doesnt have the resources to supply an invasion of Iran. Think, what would it be like if the US army had to spread itself over Iran and Iraq? And i know iran doesnt have as large or advanced army as the US but its still respectable.

I'm not sure if there would be a draft (not exactly sure how many reserves are in iraq/afghanistan) but I definantly think we could beat Iran with a motive to stop his nuclear bomb 'projects', hell, maybe even a couple other country's will realize that he could be very deadly to very many people and send a significant amount of troops to help the U.S., just a thought. (no offense to any of those countrys)

I am embarrassed, as an American, to have Bush as my president.

I am currently studding abroad in Budapest, Hungry and there is absolutely no respect for Americans because of Bush.

He is systemically ruining America and everything it stands for.

If you really want to learn about Bush instead of just reading some opinion thread on a skiing website read the book “Armed Madhouse” by Greg Palast. It is an extremely insightful and comedic look at the Bush white house.

Although I think that it was pretty low to note cite the original author of that...I did read the piece though.

All I have to say is that everyday when I read the news, I cringe at the laws that keep getting passed that are just pissing allllllllllllll over the constitution and the bill of rights.

His new terror law that is all but official now; that gives them the authority to detain prisoners and not allow them the option to challenge their detention in court, is an absurdity. Now I don't like the terrorists; I think they are ignorant fools, but EVERYONE should be guaranteed a fair trial. By passing laws like that you are lowering the nation to standards that are the same as the terrorists.

They walked into Iraq already without even the slightest hint of an exit-strategy. Look at that region now. It is a complete and utter mess. Yes, a dictorial leader is gone, but the death rate over there is MUCH higher than it was even when Saddam was tossing Kurds into graves. That country has collapsed and hatred of the United States is at an all-time high, world-wide.

Good luck winning a "War on Terror" when you've got the whole entire world hating you now.

In short, Bush really is nothing more than an elected Dictator.

If iran used on of their nukes, the rest of the world would nuke them to hell. And it becomes a stalemate.

Are you fucking kidding me? If your a terrorist who gives a fuck about your right to a fair trial, they didn't give a shit when they sent a little kid with a bomb strapped on him to kill our U.S. soldiers.

I wish someone here knew something about military operations...

Any war with Iran would be very limited as far as ground forces go. The US army is stretched as thin as it is between Afghanistan, Iraq and the Korean border. Primarily it would be an air war designed to neutralize strategic positions such as military bases, supply dumps, air bases, ports, governmental offices, transportation hubs, bridges, roads, railways, but most importantly, Chemical weapons plants and nuclear enrichement sites. The Us Army and Marine Corps is almsost used up, but the US Navy and Airforce has hardly been touched. A war with iran would be manageable, on a limited basis. And FTP, your a dumbass you know about as much about military-governmental operations as Bill Clinton does about fidelity. There would be no draft. The war in the middle east is unpopular enough.

Oh and another thing. How can you say Bush is an elected Dictator? We elected him into presidency 2 fucking times because the majority of the americans agreed with his beliefs. I'm tired of everybody just acting like his an idiot. Also, there is the branchs of government to limit his power, so how is he a 'dictator' when replublicans and democrats alike are passing the bills? And then about Iraq, we are helping the Iraqi's rebuild their government, and you know why alot of them want us out? because they SUPPORT the terrorism and we aren't just leaving and letting the terrorists get into power again, jesus christ. I'm tired of these bullshit threads. /rant over

If iran used on of their nukes, the rest of the world would nuke them to hell. And it becomes a stalemate.

If people in the world start nuking each other, we will officially be the stupidest fucking organism to touch the earth's surface. Bush is fucking trying his best though to try and ruin the entire world, thanks alot.

They can say it because George Clooney and Green Day tell them it's true, duh. Check your sources man, because Billy Joe really knows his shit.

Snoogins.

Yeah, by trying to stop their Nuclear Weapons program Bush is an idiot, most definantly.

exaclty, whoever first uses a nuke will ultimatly destroy the earth therefor no one will use them.

Iran is just trying to make sure the US wouldn't think about using nukes.

Intimidation over other countries. It basically means that no other countries will even dare of trying to invade us.

1st off, we warned them. 2nd off, we didn't realize what the effects were radiation were at the time.

"If Iran did acquire atomic bombs, it would put pressure on other countries in the region do the same. Many Arab countries believe it is unfair that Israel has nuclear weapons. If Arab countries, notably Saudi Arabia but also Egypt and possibly Syria, found themselves caught between a nuclear-armed Israel and a nuclear-armed Iran, it would greatly increase pressures to pursue their own nuclear options. This could result in a regional arms race in the Middle East which is likely to be quite destabilizing, given the number and intensity of conflicts and instabilities in the region. "

That's a paragraph from the article, I'd just like to point that out.

Oh and...

Iran does not currently have nuclear weapons, and would appear to be about two years away from acquiring nuclear weapons. By some time in 2006, however, Iran could be producting fissile material for atomic bombs using both uranium enriched at Natanz and plutonium produced at Arak. The Natanz facility might produce enough uranium for about five bombs every year, and the Arak facility might produced enough plutonium for as many as three bombs every year.

^ Exactly what Bush is trying to prevent.

if we do go to war, which some guy predicted at a lecture i went to a while back, then yes America will take the title of stupidest country in the world, which it might be even now. There is just way too much confusion over this war on terror/iraq/anyone in the MIddle east that doesn't support Israel. basically we create more terrorists everytime we do anything in the middle east. so yea Bush's war on terror just creats more of it. like i always said you gotta use love, not war to stop terrorism and violence. bush is a terrorist

Oh, I supposed we 'overreacted' when they crashed 3 planes into buildings in the attempts of killing people... We should have just wagged our figure at them and forgave them so they would stop.

I dont even know where to start...there is just too much...

I will say this, the dangers of Nuclear Radiation were very well known to us 50 years before the bombs dropped. Marie and Peter Curie had intensive research into the subject.

The entire concept of a nuclear bomb is radiation. Do you even know what radiation is? Radiation is matter being converted into an energy wave. How does a nuclear bomb work? The same, but accelerated process.

This is just 1, EXTREMELY simplified criticism of one of the dumbfuck arguments used in this forum.
