Me and my dad are thinkin really hard on startin an e-buisiness, and it would sell skis, boards bindings, whatever. My question is, would you rather pay 150-250 dollars less than from any other ski shop and wait 2-3 weeks for shipping, or would you want to go somewhere else and pay 150-250 more and get them in 3-5 days? We will sell them cheap, but we don't have warehousing space so shipping would take longer.

It's not that easy. First of all, any respectable company won't just sell you skis at cost so you can then turn around and make 20 bucks a pair off of them. And you'll have to make certain order sizes from a company to even open you up as an account so you cant order a pair as you need them, it just doesnt work like that. A lot of companies also make you return them from the stores that you bought them at, who wants to take the time to send them back to you have you send them to the compnay have the company dick around with them for a week then ship them back to you then you ship them back to whatever dumbass bought them from you. And it is not cheap to ship skis and bindings together either. Also, when selling stuff on the internet you have to abide by certain standards that the comapnys set, and can't go below these standards, there is minimum prices that you can charge, etc. How many online stores are there? Not many man. And, do you have any idea howmuch product you would have to move to make this profitable?

Good plan, but you're not the first to come up with it and it won't work the way you want it to. But have a nice day and better luck next time.

 
you should have started thisin september when everybody was looking for skis, if i hadn't bought mine already, i'd for sure be down with you guys but how would make money if your selling for such a break?

Because they have to pay for warehousing, and pay workers. The buisinessmy dad runs has all the people to do this and he won't have to pay them very much more because half the time they're not doing anything anyway. So we don't have to make a lot of money on each pair of skis.

Sorry andrew, if we can start it, it probably won't be until christmas. I'll keep you updated. But we will also carry a whole buncha other stuff. like wakeboarding stuff, skateboarding stuff inline stuff, bmx stuff, you get the idea.

you should carry stuff other than skis and boots and bindings. if you want to do well as a bussiness you need to also carry products that peopel will buy a lot more often. i'm not sure if that would be clothing or videos or something but just a thought.- also go for it! screw these shops that tryto make 180 bucks on a pair of skis

I don't want to burst any bubbles, but:

150-200 bucks below skishop prices is not too hard to find, but I didn't have to wait 2-3 weeks, 4 or 5 days and I had it at my doorstep.

International dealers, like d-structure and freeskishop.net have really good deals (100-200 below US retail) and at least freeskishop.net ships them from europe in 4-5 days (i haven't ordered from d-structure, so I don't know).

 
yeah!!! i will be looking for boots around christmas time, be sure to post when you guys open. i think you guys will make a killing, even if it is just from the members here and their word of mouth. i have a bunch of friends who ski/wakeboard/bmx/etc..., and in rural wi, shops jack up prices cause where the hell else are we gonna get it? i would pass on the good word for sure, and im sure more people on this site would if it meant keeping these deals alive. good luck man

a tip... i dont know if you already did this, but if it were me i would become a member of as many sites like this as i could, for all the types of gear you sell, and just get the word out (free advertising)

International shipping - I cant find anyone that does it for a reasonable price. I dont care if I have to wait - ill buy in summer and wait 3 months for the ship to get here if it means ill get exactly what i want for cheap. meanwhile ill keep combing japan for skiis long enough for me for under 70,000 yen

 
the prices at freeskishop include all shipping costs, there is nothing extra, no duties, nothing. I ordered a pair of 2003 pocket rocket from them got them monday: 450 (instead of 600 something bucks), was at my door after 4 days, I think...with FedEx

 
Yes international shipping at reasonable prices would be good!!! And i to would wait 4 months or so if it meant that i got what i wanted for cheap. I would order in summer and get them by winter!!

There are many different shops out there to find skis at very good prices. You just have to look around and find them. I just got a pair of Nordica Beast 92's with rossi axial 140's on them of $575 from cupulo sports. They were mounted and shipped to my door free of charge. They are in Canada somewhere so shipping took a week or so but it sure beat the $950 that I would have payed in the local shops.

 
Well when you do start your business, don't get discouraged this year. Most people have gotten their skis and stuff already, and all they'll really need are some little accessories. Eventually after skis break and stuff falls apart, you will get some more business. I wakeboard,inline, and bmx for fun in the summer, so in the spring you may get a crapload of business. Shipping time for me doesnt really matter, just 2 factors apply for me: 1) my stuff actually comes, hopefully it comes by the time i need it, and 2) my stuff comes in good condition

the sacrifice of speedy shipping time for big price drops is nice, but maybe it eventually can be faster shipping. A week of waiting is definitely worth a saved 200 bux

The point of a company is to make business. Why would you try and save the consumer so much money? It'll be cool to have new skis in your garage and 14 yr-old newschoolers trying to suck your dick for equipment but eventually it'll get to be a headache!

I hadn't even turned around,pulled my pants down,or sat down.I was vomiting, pooing everywhere,pissing and crying all at the same time.

Ok, dude, you're idea is fundementally sound, however, unless you have an established company, or a sizable bank account to draw from, you will fail.

Have you taken into consideration web design costs, web hosting, shipping costs, cost of storing product, etc.?

You cannot just order 10 skis from a company. There is a minimal order quantity you can get from them. I've worked at a shop for awhile now, and I feel I understand how the system works.

About the prices, there is the MSRP, which is the price that the company suggests you sell it at, there is the street price, which is what most shops advertise it for, and there is the club price, which is the lowest a shop will usually sell the product for, this varies from shop to shop. Usually, if you bug the shop enough for a deal, or you are a good customer to them, they will give you a 'deal'/.
