Want to Film With TGR?

So you've been prepping for your epic season edit, walking around the neighborhood in your outerwear bagging 'lifestyle' shots, holding a GoBro out in front of your face while you slay lines/flat boxes, and are just praying that your edit gets Video of the Day on NS. Why not take that same edit and try and beat a tiny field of competitors for a new Sony Action Cam or... gasp... the chance to FILM WITH TGR?? Yes, those guys (well, us, actually) want to find out who the hottest kid on two planks (that's also under 18) is that we should be filming with but have never heard of, and that's why we're hosting our Grom Contest for the 5th year in a row. Here's the deal:

TGR's 5th Annual Grom Contest

View attachment 702286

-From now until April 27th, we will be accepting submissions of Youtube & Vimeo edits on our Grom Contest homepage (http://www.tetongravity.com/contests/2014-tgr-grom-contest/).

-You must be 17 years or younger on April 27th, 2014

-Your edit can't be longer than 3 minutes long

-You must have the rights to the footage you use, and it can be shot anywhere in the WORLD! (this is not a contest for Jackson Hole locals!)

-Each week (after Sunday's midnight weekly deadline), we will choose the best ski edit and send that dude or duddette a brand-new Sony Action Cam. It's like a GoPro that doesn't make you look like a gaper with a small TV on your head! You can actually enter a new edit every week if you want to, but chances are we'll get bored.

-Submissions close April 27th. On June 20th, a panel of judges that include past Grom Contest winner Daniel Tisi, TGR co-founder Todd Jones, and the one and only Dale Talkington, will judge the Best Ski overall edit as well as the Grand Prize edit.

-The Best Ski edit will get to have their edit featured on the DVD of TGR's 2014 ski film, Almost Ablaze, and will have their edit featured before the film at all 150+ international fall film premiere stops. You'll be famous!

-If you win the Grand Prize, you'll win a chance to film with TGR (and their RED Epics, heli-mounted nose GSS 250 cameras, and army of cinematographers) next season!!

This contest has helped us find some serious gems - guys like Daniel Tisi and Willie Borm - and with the caliber of edits uploaded to NS on a daily basis, we wanted to let you guys know we're even doing this contest so your season edit has a chance to make a huge difference in your dream of becoming a pro skier dude.

But first you got to please the judges. Keep in mind what kind of skiers TGR likes to shoot with - guys like Sammy Carlson and Tim Durtschi who can not only shred the hell out of a park, but can ski powder, ride lines, and are just incredible all-around skiers. If your edit is only rails, you probably wont' make it far; if it's rails, jumps, cliffs, trees, powder, and wallrides, you'll have a much better chance. Show how well rounded you are!

But enough about me, here's what the judges are looking for:

Daniel Tisi, winner of the 2011 Grom Contest:

“I’m looking for smart, smooth, and consistent skiing. And most importantly a person who just has fun. Having making good decisions and having fun is key to progression.

[Talking about his winning Grom Contest edit] I remember just putting a POV camera on my helmet and skiing. Looking back at it, I was surprised with the shots I got. My brother Jackson played a big role in the Grom Contest for me, though. He edited my entry and found the music for me.

I think what won the Grom Contest for me was just showing the everyday skier that I was. I had as much fun as I could! The features I hit included park, pipe, big mountain, and deep pow. It's always good to show your versatility. Just create your own image and show us your everyday style and I will be beyond stoked to watch it!

Todd Jones, co-founder of TGR:

“I don’t know what I am looking for. Maybe that special sauce, the style, something unique and diverse. I only know it when I see it. It triggers an emotion that is hard to explain or capture. It inspires. There is no way to work towards it or it would be false. It just is there in the end. In fact, it was probably already there before it began.”

Dale Talkington, Winner of the 2013 TGR Co-Lab:

“All around riding, definitely someone with a unique style, someone who sticks out from everyone else. I'd definitely like to see people who can do both urban and big mountain. Good jumping with both-ways spinning - just an around ripper who looks comfortable on their skis and not forced.”

So enough with the words, let's see some good edits and make sure you throw your edit up here once you've submitted to the contest (link again here: http://www.tetongravity.com/contests/2014-tgr-grom-contest/) and lets see who some future TGR athletes might be!

Also thought I'd throw up the Week 1 & 2 winning ski edits to give people an idea of the caliber of entries so far:

Week 1 Winner: Michael Tarasca, Age 13, Red Mountain B.C. local

Week 2 Winner: Hunter Keffalos, Age 16, Alyeska, Alaska

Think you can beat these guys? Enter the contest, yo!

exaggerated but yeah. Most powder skiers under 18 aren't all that impressive (in terms of massive cliffs and tricks). That 13 year olds edit was weak too.

can you submit more than one edit? I know it sounds dumb, but i wont be finished my season edit for a while, but wanna submit someting soon too

Im confused? daniel tisi won in 2011 (assuming 2010-2011 season) but he is wearing 2012-2013 chronics?

Just gives em more incentive to showcase the Best coast, I wanna see an east coast kid whose back country part is shot at some random sketchy hillsides and cliffs he finds around town beat out the nipple deep champagne pow edit from the west coast kid. If a kid from Hamilton would have sacked up and ripped down the mountain awhile ago (Hamilton is basically cut in two by the Niagara escarpment) I know he could have got some banger shots. But its too late now anyway, so yeah thats pretty lame TGR.

Pretty much this. Tgr I am disappoint, of all ski production companies you'd think you would be looking for the raw-est skier out regardless of age

They already have a fucking fleet of some of the raw-est motherfuckers out there. Don't cry.

holy shit , hate to be a hater, but that 18 yr. olds edit was weak as hell ! dude could barely turn or spin a 3 .( yeah the 13 yr olds was lame but hes 13 so whatev) i mean i give him all the respect in the world for going out and filming and putting together an edit of what he loves to do etc. but in all honesty i cant believe that edit was a " this weeks winner" or whatev they call it, as far as skiing goes that 13 yr. old is almost on par with the 18 yr old, pretty crazy for a 5 year difference. come on TGR ! . haha man i wish i was still 18 haha, sorry for the hate, just speaking my mind , stoked to see some more edits now that the newschooler community has heard of this etc. always been a great idea from tgr, now lets see some bangers from all those youngings out there that can put me and those other edits to shame, there are some damn good teenagers out there these days, hope tgr can find em, or they can find tgr or whatev haha, but i do hope to see some better skiing..... again sorry for being a hater, but ya.

Holy crap people, it's a junior contest. For people under 18.

Just like there's junior competitions for people under 18. Thankfully I never see people older than 18 bitching about not being able to go into those. Usually I don't see people over 18 bitching about any type of junior thing.

I get that people are trying to move away from age claims, but this is just a contest to give those younger kids exposure.

ha i thought the other kid was 18 not 16, myyyyy baaaad. ha make that a 3 yr difference between the two ha, sorry for double post, im an idiot obviously......... , ha , but my opinion still stands haha

This is such a great competition, especially since they ruined Superunknown these days by making it only for the terrain parkers

see but that almost touches on my point-- it makes sense in a competition (oh, and every kid "big mtn" comp ive seen has been really boring.. no offense to anyone it's just an observation..some sports just arent fun to spectate until the athletes are at a certain level-- have you ever watched a kids' hockey game? brutal)

it just seems arbitrary and dumb to make a contest like this for U18 only. young kids can absolutely slay park but as an all around skier for TGR kind of stuff, teenagers just arent as fun to watch

just my 2 cents, carry on

age limit is stupid. Many unsponsored/unfound skiers that are good enough to film with TGR are in college or at least of college age.

Why not maybe an age 25 limit or no limit at all?

duhhhh. Why does it have to be a grom contest at all? Unless they know something along the lines that kids = more DVD sales, I don't really see the point.

I think by default you cunts would find a way to complain about any contest TGR throws. They don't have to feature any fucking kids. They are choosing too.

haha don't shoot man!

we're just making comments on a message board, relax. i love TGR, i just don't think groms excel at their type of skiing is all

this is why Level 1 is outpacing them. Superunknown has found some of the best skiers, and im fairly certain most were over 18.

Okay let me address a couple of the concerns/questions raised here:

Age limit BS: We've hosted the Grom Contest as an under 18 since the beginning five years ago, and the idea is really to find kids who are showing that preternatural level of talent. Tisi is better in more kinds of terrain than nearly any kid his age, as you guys mentioned not that many kids have a well-rounded game in high school, but think of kids like Tisi or Kye Peterson, they could ski everything by high school. Similarly, Willie Borm was an oustanding young skier. The competition for solid well-rounded skiers would indeed be more competitive if the age limit was raised to something like 25, but the whole point is to find those kids who are already good at a young age. The Co-Lab was actually another contest we did that ended up being great for finding the kind of talent you're talking about (a la Nick McNutt, who's been filming with us all winter).

Week 1 Winner crappy edit: No offense to Michael, but yes, these are the caliber of edits winning the contest right now (mostly due to lack of entries, hence why I started this thread!!). Since so many of you think you've better skills, why not enter the contest? You could pretty easily win a new POV camera, if not the chance to film with us...

Daniel Tisi's skis: That was a Sony Mind's Eye edit from 2012/2013, wasn't his actual entry, but just wanted to show you what caliber skiers are winning the contest.

East Coast edits: Go for it! I Grew up in NH and remembered building landings below cliffs that had dead flat landings; that's a cliff jump to me! If you're shredding the shit out of iced-over tight East Coast trees with exposed rocks, that sure as hell shows some talent. Remember, we're looking for TALENT, not for you to show us epic powder. If you get to film with us, we'll find you some powder ;).

On the same note, I hope kids like Noah Ranallo, Dylan Dipentima, and Carter Snow are under 18 and out there listening, because those guys at young VT locals (Mad River Glen I think) and have been absolutely slaying East Coast "backcountry" in all the Ski The East edits that have come out this winter. East Coast kids with real talent and are showing it without having to live at the base of Whistler. If someone knows them, please send up the smoke signal!

Multiple edits: You can submit one edit per week, so yes!

If you're worried about being too park-centric for TGR, you could throw up an edit that's still 80% park, but get creative in order to show your abilities beyond the park. That could take a lot of forms - rip a mogul line, jump whatever crappy cliffs your local hill might have at full speed with good style, film some layback carves. Think beyond the switch-up!

Hell yeah. Mad River Glen, Smuggs, Jay, that's where you'll fine some of the best skiers in the country.

Was apprehensively scouting out a big old hairy cliff in Jay sidecountry a few weeks ago - some local kid just flew by me, nailed it without even looking.

Oh Superunknown is WAY more successful than the Grom Contest. it's been going on longer and they do an excellent job building the hype about it. We've never put on quite as intense a campaign as Level 1 has to promote and organize the contest, but that's partly why I'm on NS trying to get the word out. But it's not a super fair comparison, I mean they found JON BROGAN for god's sake, who aside from Dave Crichton is maybe the only skier whose rent I'd consider paying if they'd just keep skiing and putting out edits.

/images/flash_video_placeholder.png

Anyway, wanted to highlight an edit shot of kids from the East Coast that are absolutely slaying it, charging hard, skiing fast, jumping everything in sight, with only what they have around them. Sort of the TC of the big-mountain world. But their talent and competency on skis is blatantly obvious in this edit, and I hope they all enter the contest...

But I should really stop discouraging you park rats out there... remember, we've filmed with Tom Wallisch, Sammy Carlson, Dale Talkington, etc. to shoot only park stuff... we want YOU, too!
