Wanaka and Snow Park

Howdy,

I'm planning on moving to New Zealand for a couple of months this year so I can ski at Snow Park.

I was just wonder if I could get some of your thoughts on what Snow Park is like. Also, I was planning on living in Wanaka since it is 35km from Snow Park were as Queenstown is 65km?

Is Wanaka my best bet?

If it is, what is the town like?

Do they have much for accommodations?

Is there a gym in Wanaka?

Feel free to add anything else that may be helpful.

Thanks

Wanaka: Small town 3000-4000 people. Chilled, very relaxed. Mainly locals and ski bums. About 5 bars.

Queenstown: Touristy, 8000ish people. Asian's and shit loads of tourists. Heaps of bars. To get to snow park you have to drive over the crown range, a big mother fucken hill.

Accomadation not easy to get in either place, as only small towns, and heaps of people.

I have hoildayed in Wanaka all my life and love it, Queenstown is too commerilised.

Wnaka ski fields www.treblecone.co.nz www.cardrona.co.nz Queenstown ski fields coronet peak and remarkables www.nzski.com. Snow park is a wanaka field, as much as Queenstown would like to claim it. www.snowparknz.com

Both places have gyms. Snow park is only in its thrid season but have spent megga bucks over the summer to up grade it.

basically snow park is the shit man its fuckin awesome and you would not be dissapointed by coming here to ride it for a couple of months they have a new quad chair and a fuckload more snowmaking this year so it will be a sick season all in all...

Just need it to snow dammit. I'm arriving in Wanaka in a weeks time for the season. Bring it on. Anyone know anywhere to get cheap digs? I'm staying in Purple cow backpacker for first week but on the street after that.

Sounds good, thanks for the replies.

I'm thinking that Wanaka sounds like more my style plus it seems to be closer to Snow Park.

As long as I can find a place to stay and they have a grocery store and gym to workout at in Wanaka then I think I will go there.

Thanks again

I was wondering if there was a website for a local newspaper, rental agency or something along those lines where I could try and find a place to stay.

The local paper is the messenger. It is so low key, just A4 pieces of paper stuck together with tape. comes out every week and pick it up for free from in town. That will be your best bet for a start. The gym is call Wanaka active or some thing like that. It was brand new about 18months ago. Havent been inside, but it look pretty flash from the outside.

Have been having a search on the internet and this is what I came up with. Dont tell them you are a skier though. May be scientist out here doing research on saving the world. Skiers and boarders get bad reputations in wanaka for trashing houses. I am going to be in wanaka in about two weeks, so email me then if you come up with any thing and I could check it out.
