Wack Ski Shop

So I work at "X" company and applied to be a ski tech or at least in winter sports sales. They told me "we don't have any open positions, but we can hire you as a cashier for $Y/hr." Me being poor and paying rent, utilities, etc. and having online classes, I took the part time job. Fast forward, they're consistently understaffed in that department, and floor staff quickly realized that I'm literally the most qualified boot fitter and can talk ski the best in store. Months later, I've got my earpiece in, hear a question "Got a customer with 97mm waist skis. Do I recommend 100mm or 115mm brake bindings?" Shop tech answers "Definitely 115mm." God I hate my store.

TLDR: Don't shop big box retail, shop small business.

Damn that’s whack af, maybe you can find a job at a better store as a tech or on floor sales person.

In Nelson, a ski town, most people what work the shops never skied a day in their lives. Sure they can sell skis, but when something goes wrong, service dies. I bought a pair of cochise and they sold me a pair with 2 different tongue sizes. Took 3 employees before anyone understood the problem. Then it took 2 months of dicking around with that shop and explaining for them to call the rep and have a pair of tongues shipped. Then tried to charge me for the tongues and shipping (110$ plus the 800$ the boots put me back).

So, just because you work a ski shop, doesnt mean that employees actually practice the sport

next shot is OP diving in slow motion screaming noooo, earpierce still in, slapping the 115mm brakes out of the dude's hand like it's poison

then a coworker is like wait where did the earpiece come from? did you bring that from home

I just genuinely don't understand the logic here. I could understand if you had a 97mm ski were deciding between a 95 and 115 brake for example, or even 95 and 110 but ... what? I'm hoping it was a joke you didn't pick up on otherwise there is no hope lol

One time I stopped in a town called Cooma on the way to Perisher at what, if I remember correctly, is the biggest ski/snowboard shop in Australia. I was trying to buy poles. I swear the lady helping me had to be on crack. I probably would have bought some poles if she would have just given me 5 minutes to myself.

wow, that horrible. any knowledgeable ski tech obv woulda recommended the 130 brakes.

damn that must be frustrating.

kinda weird they don't recognize the talent though, thats poor management.

I was at 3 different specialty stores here, asking for a over 100mm vise, an electric sharpener, and wider plexi for removing wax... all 3 stores had employees telling me that stuff didnt exist... one of the stores has it on their webpage.. and I orderd it there. its like.. 1 store + they have a webpage... comeon!

We get it you work at REI.

Fr tho never going to REI again. They had a sale where you can get your skis mounted for half off so I went as I had just got a setup. The guy who I talked to thought he was an amazing ski tech guy and thought I was clueless. I specifically said I wanted -2.5 from center and he argued me. He then proceeded to say how “I’m making a mistake” in a disguised way. He then takes my skis and points to me and says something to his co-worker but I was to far away to hear. I ended up checking my skis 3 weeks after (should’ve done it right after I received them) and they mounted them at recommended, -4 from center. I will never go to that shop again and deal with such morons and people who do what they think is best for themselves or their own opinions.

For all those saying that I work for REI or should at least say who I work for - you really never know who will see your shit online, and plausible deniability is a great thing to have when you've got bills. I won't confirm whether it is or isn't REI. That being said, it's a three letter company that isn't EMS.

Must've been a terrible joke, because I checked him out with his 115mm brakes

My local mountain has a ski shop and I went in with my new setup and told them specifically I wanted -1 from center and gave them my boot because they had to wait till the next day. We’ll long story short the next day I walk in at about noon and they go to fit my boot to the ski after they had already mounted it and it was like not even close. I watch them redrill without checking and once again it’s not even remotely close to the right size. And finally they redrill again and it fits. But they never even plugged the holes. So I now have three sets of holes in there. Gonna be trouble trying to sell em later on. Never going back there.

dude, its not just going to be trouble resell, that is going to be $0

with open holes, core will rot and ski will delam/break.

they owe you a new ski.

I quite often buy used skis because I'm cheap and wanna try some models, and its HORRIBLE seeing all the bad mounts as I remove binders.

Just this weekend I bougt skis with bindings, come to inspect them closer, toe is broken on binder... meh pull them, ohhhh 2 screws are 100% loose in the holes, just moving about... "yay" soooo ok topsheet is vulcanoed bad on the holes as well, but I can beat them down, and hardwood/epoxy them, no biggie.. the older holes can match my BSL with some magic and inserts redrilling at very edges of holes.. now to the issue, the cunt that mounted the other holes as well, must have done it on acid using a paper template, so I had to replug old holes, redrill again since its better not to drill into a plastic vs hardwood/epoxy situation, and then overdrill with 6,5mm insert drillbit. this gave me 3mm on each end and I really needed that 3+3mm as some holes was to right of my jig holes, some to front, some to rear etc... .. and I made it work. Adding to insult they were mounted not on the line but one forward, one rear of it... "=)#¤%=)#"¤=)%#"=¤%)#¤%

this is like buying old japanese cars, or cars from the UK, you know there has been an idiot working on them.

You definitely need to go back and raise hell

damn. that sucks for him. rule of thumb is definitely no wider than 15mm. I currently have JJULs with 100mm brakes on them and they fit perfect. I also have Vision 108s with 95mm pivots. it also depends on the binding brand. Tyrolia brakes are definitely wider than their stated 95mm.

Shit bro you need to go back in there and get your skis replaced asap. It's ludicrous what they've done

Yeah but after they fucked me over I went to another shop, I mounted and plugged the holes and then remounted the bindings one again, sucks that I have like 4 sets of holes but my local shop basically just said oopsie daises and told me that it was my fault somehow??‍♂️

Just like his story about how ski patrol thought he broke his neck, and they supposedly told him "Yeah maybe go to the doctor if it gets worse".

My bad. They mounted twice tho and didn’t plug the holes not three my bad but because I went to another ski shop to have them take out the bindings fill the holes and re mount so in total 3 sets of holes

190 bibby pro, when I glued the inserts in holes... on 1 hole, the epoxy passed through ski and up old hole.. "yay" :p

this is why you dont want many holes in a ski

I've come to the point where I don't think I even know of a shop in my area that I'd really trust, or that isn't staffed with egotistical dopes. Most of the time when I'm talking to them they don't seem to know anything beyond the most basic shit about binding or boots/fit.
