WA needs a big mtn comp

we have a few rail jams and comps in the park but we really need a big mtn comp. since a lot of the good big mtn riding in the area is hard to see or we don't want to tell everyone where it is. I think some place like baker should put on a comp that between a 3 week period your team of say 2-4 riders would be given a jersey and would have to ride the best lines and clifs and such that they could, film it and put it together in an edit by a certain date and than have a night where a ton of people get together and drink some beers watch the videos and vote on which one had the best riding.

you could also give awards for like best single line, best editing, best crash and so on.

i think it'd be a shit tone of fun

that would be cool it would put us more on the national map as some good big mtn skiing, you just have to find it thats all

Crystal had a legit big mtn comp a couple years ago. But then they got a bunch of lawsuits and decided that it was too dangerous for anybody to get air under their skis. But Crystal or Baker could easily host a nice big mtn comp if they wanted.

Mt Baker used to have a big mtn comp sometime before 98-99. It was in the bc down what I think is the north face of hemispheres. Basically, if you go from the top of 8 and skate on that trail sideways and then take a run it was somehwere in there. Or if when your riding up chair 6 and looked out left when your almost at the top.

anyone know how to go about pitching an idea like this to mt baker? i bet the local ski /board shops would be into supporting it hell they could even sponser teams to film so you could have like the bellingham boardsports team or farihaven ski and bike team.

but if anyone here knows someone with pull at baker that'd be awesome we should actually do this. it'd be a great ski / snowboard/ film festival type thing

I say we all start sending 2 emails a week to snow@mtbaker.us . I am already sending that 2/week telling them to improve their park and such, but I dont think its helping since im one of the only one.

My boss said it probably wont happen ever again because of insurance/liability of putting a competition in the backcountry. But hopefully if everyone emails the ski area a lot, then it might actually happen.

START SENDING EMAILS ABOUT SOMETHING, EVEN IF YOU DONT SKI AT BAKER!!!!

technically they wouldn't be holding a comp in the BC its up to the participants where to go the ski area can't control that i'm gonna start sending e-mails thanks

Sounds good. I just sent off an email. I've been emailing them about once a week about their park too. I've been emailing Crystal about putting in a park there too, but I'm 100% Crystal doesn't care. Baker actually goes so far as to email me back and say things like "we're working on the park" and "check back in a few months."

baker used to have an "underground" comp on elf chutes, but it was cancelled due to both insurance reasons (just like the whistler event) and something to do with the forrest service because the event was being held out of bounds. other than that area of hemispheres there are really not any good venues at baker to cater to a traditional big mountain competition like there used to be at crystal...however that video idea could open up new opportunities, but is doubtful in part because of the rediculous costs of insurance for a big mountain event and the fact that mt. baker ski area is just that...mt. baker ski area (if that doesn't make sense, don't worry about it).

^I probably dont know what Im talking about, but arent the elf chutes the area to skiers right of the chute on Pan Dome?

crystal mountain has one, nobody showed up this year but i think theyre tryin to make it bigger and get back on the ifsa circuit

baker could be sick for it i think but ya it would defently be in the BC and the insurancy would be fuckin nuts and we all know baker doesnt like spending money as it is.

I think that if they call it a big mtn video comp they can get away with it cuz they aren't actually holding it anywhere they are just judging your videos and riding kinda like a loop hole to the insurance thing

ahhh shit i wanted to do that so badly

my friend did it a few years back and the judges were mad at him for going too big. I don't think I'll have time next year either. BAH!! My parents said i have to complete my sponsor video before I can compete in that

I competed this year and the judges were not discouraging big airs. They were pushing for inverts(off the record) and gave the guy that lawn darted 80+ft a pair of skis.

The only reason they would discourage going big is if the guy looked like a rookie trying to hurt himself. I am guessing that wasnt the case since you brought it up.
