i wanna buy a vw golf, buy the speedometer speed, does anyone know what could be wrong with it? or should i take it to some were to get it fixed, then were would i go? please help!

there is not a everyday car..... if my paretns are going to buy it, then it must be under 4000, i may pay for it, and get a GTI VR6... i love that car

i personaly wouldnt buy it then because there is a good chance that something else could go on it. is it a private deal or are you buying from a dealer. if it is from a dealer i wouldnt but if it is private have the other person(seller) fix it then take it to a mechanic that you trust (maybe your parents) and see what they think.

thanks. the golf is 3000, the VR6 is 7000, but it must be a stick, so it has a 5 speed in it.

to answer your question, more often than not, it's a wire that gets disconnected, severed, torn etc. wires are cheap. it also may just need re-adjusting, this happened to my friends civic, it's a really cheap fix

 
It sounds like the speedometer may be broken. I'd recommend getting it fixed, possibly by a mechanic, perhaps one who works on cars.

Seriously though, Golfs are good little cars. I'd rather have a GTI but whatever- you get what you pay for. A broken speedo shouldn't cost that much to fix.

Snapjibberwhatever- does the GTI go lower than 5-speed? I've never seen any manual transmission on a car with less than 5. My Vespa has four, though... and it's almost not enough, even for a tiny little 2-stroke engine.

Mark three's are crappy, go for a mk II G60 or even better a mk II Rallye!! VR6's just drink fuel and you get crap all out of them, i had a 306 S16 which used to eat the VR6's for breakfast.

 
old muscle car have 4 speeds. well i found a VR6 for 7000, and a GTI for 6000, i think im gonig to go for the GTI, i will bring it to my dads machanic at work. we works at a golf coruse, and he is really good. i will reply later what happens.

You don't need a speedometer... just go with the flow of traffic... or generally know "hey im in 5th and im at 5000 rpm... i may be speeding"

easy tiger. for one not all cars are cables, many have electronic sensors now (i dont know what the gulf has for sure, but cant blame some people for not knowing) Second...I have changed the speedo cable on a vehicle before...and its not an easy job. depending how how the routing is and lots of other thing it can take alot of work...provided it is even the cable and not a dead guage or linkage

And kid buying the car...Dont. first it is illegal to sell a vehichle without a working speedo and you wont be able to get it saftied untill it works. Also if the speedo doesnt work then neither will the odometer so if its been busted a long time then the cars milage could be way off and you wont know what your getting.

fuck that...the only vw worth buying is the 16 valve... you get such a higher powerband...no matter what car you have, the engine will stop producing power at around 4500 rpms

the 16 valve keeps producing power up around 6800 rpms...makes for a better, faster more powerfull ride

i just bought a 99 jeep cherokee. first time i tried to start it, they guages didnt work at all.

they work now. the auto guys said it was probably some water (it rained...A LOT) around one of the electrical wires. so itll work. give it another check

FUJATIVE.... I have been the owner of a golf for the past 5 years and have had some problems with it, but overall im glad I have it....I would recommend not buying a mk3 gti if it isnt a VR6, because you're wasting your money.... mk3's (1994-1998.5) gti's come with 2 engine options a 2.0L 8Valve, and a VR6....the VR6 is fast and ballsy, and there are plenty of mods you can do.... the 2.0 GTI....is a waste because you'll be paying for the "GTI" logo on your car and a few interior options like nicer seats...and your insurance will be higher than if you get a Golf GL for example, that comes stock with the 2.0.... if you're in canada, there is also an mk3 golf that comes with a 1.8 8valve...the golf CL...not as much power as the 2.0....but very reliable....

on that note, my car has 350,000km, and I blew it up the other day...but...I've got a new motor and its being installed....total cost is about $900installed ...so not very expensive......just watch out for the exhaust systems, they tend to shit the bed quick(especially if you have to pass an emissions test) Check all hoses and Belts....and make sure all the fluids look good and not filthy, or strange...hope that helps if you need any info about dubs, IM me... i know lots Peace

 
yeah except that 2.0 ABA engine is one of the most tunable engines VW has ever made ( 300HP is no problem) mr. " i know lots" your not just paying for the badge either man the engine ina 2.0 gti is tuned differently than the one in the Gl as is the transmision and suspension. i dont "know lots though" www.vwvortex.com if you wanna be down

 
the 2.0 gti may be tuned differently but youre still only getting 115hp...and If you're going to go to the extreme to tune it to 300hp, you're going to spend what? like 8 grand or something? the only way I can see that engine producing those numbers is going with forced induction, and that's not cheap, plus all the mods you'd have to do internally to the motor, so it could deal with the boost with out blowing up... I'd rather start out with the stronger VR6 as a base engine...And you cant change my mind! talk to "detective" he rolls in an 04 R32.

if you can get a 2.0 to put out 300hp for 8K.. you're getting a hell of a deal.
