Video view counter mechanics

I'm curious as to how the video view counter takes its count.

I recently posted an edit, and on new schoolers it says 350 views.

It was a youtube video that I embedded onto NS.

However. When you go to the youtube video, youtube says that it only has about 70 views.

So my question is, does NS count every access to a particular page as 1 view? Because if not, then my youtube video should have 350 views, plus any other views I received from my subscribers, etc.

Is NS tricking me into thinking that 350 people have watched my video when in reality, its just that the page containing my video has been accessed a total of 350 times?

For embedded Youtube videos, you are right in that it counts page views. Youtube doesn't pass back enough information in for it to calculate actual full video views. If you want something more accurate, you can upload direct to NS where it counts true views.

exactly. Remember, that when you embed a video, you haven't added a video to newschoolers you've only added embed code. We don't have the ability to pull the newschoolers-only views from the YouTube video, so we count pageviews.

The videos that are uploaded to Newschoolers actually contain view tracking info within the player that makes it drastically more accurate.

We're working on methods of doing this better, but its less flexible when we don't have it in our system.
