Video on front page taking for ever

every time i log in the d'aroloc video trys to load and it takes like ten minutes till you can do anything. you can't tell it to stop, go to forums or even minimize it and do something eles while it figures it self out. i think if the order of the movies was changed it would work fine cuz then it would be loading a 2 minute video rather then a 20 minute one
 
I was coming here to make the same point.

The flash player shouldnt auto play. It kills the NS front page for people that are not on high speed connections and it is irritating if you are on one because it constantly plays/loads no matter what.

I liked how it was before where you would log on and nothing would play until you clicked on it or the play button for the player. Eased up on the downloads and made the front page load and operate much smoother.

This ATA video is auto playing all the time, maybe it was just a glitch but it needs to be adjusted to manual play.
 
ya, theres a line in the script to set certain videos on auto play, or you can leave it black, and let viewers select the video they want to play, i guess they want to highlight the ATA movie so that it plays automatically.

hey who woulda known you can stream full movies with that flash player.
 
I too was going to make the same point, we need an option to turn off autoplay. Everytime i get to the home page, it freezes my computer for about a minute.
 
I have to wait for the page im loading to time out and then hit refresh in order to get to the forums from the front page.
 
I too have mentioned that issue to nopoles, I'd much rather be able to choose to watch a video when I want to, not have it start automatically every time I visit the page.. its also a waste of bandwidth for everyone.
 
Dammit.... It was totally my call to make it autoplay. I fucking HATE it when videos don't autoplay on a page - it just decreases the panache of the page in my mind.

Two things:

1) Does anyone LIKE the autoplay? Our stats tell us that only 2% of our traffic is on dialup. For that matter, does anyone with highspeed have a problem with the player?

The idea to make the player autoplay was suggested by a member because of how the TGR website works. I totally agreed and fought to make it autoplay. Before removing that I want to be sure that all of you actually do want it to not autoplay and that its not just the player. We're replacing that player with a much better one within a few days, and I'm wondering if that will solve the problem.

 
I find autoplay very annoying. If I'm listening to music or doing something else, I don't want a video blowing up on my speakers.
 
Which is exactly why the video autoplays at 0 volume. You don't hear it when it comes on - you just see that there is a video there.

 
Please can everyone in here who is complaining about the video player autoplay go to www.tetongravity.com and re-post in here about whether or not that player fucks up the page for you too?

 
I'm on a crappy highspeed wireless connection so its not technically dialup. The problem is when a video is downloading nothing else is able to load up because my entire net speed is being used to download it, even msn turns off if the download is long enough. I'll check the teton site when I get home from school.
 
I am not on dialup, and www.tetongravity.com works completely fine for me, i am not totally against autoplay, i just hate the one on NS, because it seriously freezes my shit for a minute, and that does not happen anywhere else.

and did Bishop just send me to TGR?
 
Hahahha... well yeah I did but hey if we're going to rip someone's idea off I want to make sure that we just did it poorly instead of it being a bad idea. :)

See if the TGR player works fine then its not that autoplay is necessariliy a bad idea - its that our player sucks a fat nut.

New player going in REAAAALY soon, so I'm hoping that fixes it. I hate the idea of no autoplay...

Votes? Yay or nay? Is there anyone out there who likes autoplay? Of course if everyone on the site hates it we'll ditch it.

For those who say ditch it, do you only say that because it freezes? If it autoplayed with no audio but didn't freeze your computer would you support it?

 
Doug, I am on high speed internet, and it even seriously slows down loading on the first page for me. Its ridiculous. It was fine before auto-play was turned on, but recently it changed (I think). Auto-play=DEFINITE NO GO! Slows shit down.

Yes our autoplay is fucked. But if it wasn't fucked would it be OK? This decision needs to be made, but I don't want everyone making it emotionally because its messed up right now. Go visit those sites I've listed above and tell me if their autoplay function still fucks up the world.

If the answer to that is yes, then autoplay in general is a bad idea. If the answer is no, then autoplay is fine, and we just have a broken player.

BUT BEFORE YOU SAY GET RID OF AUTOPLAY PLEASE CHECK THE OTHER SITES!!!!!!!!!!!!

 
Doug, I'm personally not experiencing any actual problem with auto-play. The function itself works fine. Its the fact that it slows down the front page loading time and makes everything lag for a few seconds for me (even on extremely fast internet).

Its the same thing for me on the TGR site. Auto-play on TGR & NS works exactly the same for me BUT I personally just don't like the feature because it takes longer to load things.

On Freeskier.com the videos do NOT auto-play and I like it better. I can understand why you like auto-play however, it automatically starts a video that a site visitor may not have ever watched if it didn't automatically start.

Overall I am against it although I can understand your standpoint Doug.
 
I am not completely against autoplay if it worked like the one on TGR, that one does not slow anything down, i think the NS player just blows. Or it could be that the 20 minute ATA vid is what is slowing it down. Let's see how it works with the new player.
 
Auto Play in general will slow down load times for a site.

Think about it your loading a 110mb file or around there for the ATA video, it still has to load that file auto-play gives people no choice wheather they'd like to load it or not. its the same on every site, it actually works better with flash, but still keeps things loading slowly.

if you want to keep videos auto playing make the video size under 10mb. Dont try to force load a full length ski movie.

Auto-Play in general is annoying, especially when you have the choice to pick the video you want to watch, its not neccescary to load a video right away for people.

its not gonna change site to site, player to player cuz all flash players are built OFF of Adobes/Macromedia's SWF Flash Player they built to support their codec.

 
I dont like auto play. I like seeing whats new on the list and watching it when I get time.
 
Basically all vids for me taking forever on front page, even though this is the newest model of the dell computers with vista and dual core duo processor
 
Life is all about choices, auto play removes my ability to make choices.

At the moment I get off the home page as quickly as I can, because even if you pause the video it is still buffering and wasting bandwidth for a video I don't want to watch at the moment. The result of this is an annoyed Phil who isn't likely to watch any of the nstv videos. If auto play was disabled I would spend more time on the home page and actually watch the videos that I wanted to. Basically auto play = the devils left nipple.
 
Well who really cares about wasting bandwidth?

But anyways, I think I'm conceding defeat here and I will ask the guys to disable autoplay. I really fought for it, and now I'm the asshole.

could make it optional, in account tools theres already an option to choose connection speed (don't think it actually does anything yet though?) could write some more code to have it optional.

bandwidths kinda important for me, we only get 10gb a month shared between 3 people.. gotta get onto that unlimited download plan!

I always get unlimited internet, and I didn't think about people who didn't have that...

If i hit the front page 20 times a day and it tries to load a video, who knows what sort of bandwidth that takes

It doesn't bother me at all i actually enjoy the autoplay cuz it shows me whats playin and i always check i tout if it weren't auto play i probably wouldn't catch it...I don't notice any real lag but im on a pretty beastly connection most of the time

I would say just tweak it and keep the autoplay its def a good idea...Like most r reporting the TGR forums are working out for them so if we tweak it it should work. I do like it autoplays on zero volume def keep that!!
