OK so here is the deal. My dad gave me his old Sony handycam for christmas, and I took some CRAZY ass video last night for new years and i want to edit out all the garbage, like when random people were filming. But the prblem is, is that my dad lost the CD-ROM that came with it and so i called my step brother up who seems to think he knows everything and he told me this:

-i need a firewire card and cable to hook up my camera

-I need more than 512 mb of ram, and idk even how much i have nor do iknow how to check.

-i need to get the drivers installed and then use windows movie amker, or Adobe Premier to capture the video.

I'm completley lost and would like to know sort of a rough idea of how i should go about doing this, and how much its gonna cost me. And if he is just blowin smoke up my ass

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

if your computer doesnt have firewire and you don't have the cable then go out and buy a firewire card and cable. Probably about 50-70 bucks for the two things. You don't need more than 512mb of ram if all you're doing is capturing and some light editing.

If you have windows xp:

Once you have that plug in the camera with the firewire. Next a little 'Found New Hardware' bubble will probably come up. Some stuff will happen and another bubble should say 'Sony Camera or something installed Successfully' something like that anyway. Then just open up windows movie maker. Go to File >> Capture Video. It's pretty simple.

Thats how it worked out for me.

in addition to what 'itsbackfliptime' said, Adobe Premiere is not for you. Windows movie maker is more like it. Premiere is the industry standard for windows editing, very in depth. movie maker is basically premiere, but extremely simplified so that you can do the basic editing that you mentioned. i tried Premiere when i was new to video editing and all i ended up with was a headache. great program, but like i said..very in depth. and yeah, the firewire (IEEE-1394) card and cable will probably set you back like 70 bucks or so, but it's worth it in convenience. nothing more simple than capturing video with firewire and windows (XP)...it lays it out for you. have fun.

first off it damn wont cost you $70 bucks for an IEEE 1394 card and cable and if anyone paid $70 for one than they got ripped of. you can find em for $20 to $30 bucks at computer stores or check ads in the paper for good deals. once you got that installed all you need is a program which is able to capture and use the card. windows moviemaker is free, you can find it if you check Windows Update. if you want to get into editing, id recommend something like adobe premiere and buy a book to learn about it or another free program is Avid Free DV which you can find on www.avid.com. this one is a lil more advanced than movie maker but avid has online forums and tutorials to learn it.

you're right, the prices have come down a bit, i haven't looked at them since i got mine a long time ago. then it was like 70 for a cheap 2 port pinnacle card and about 40 for a 4-to-6 pin cable. but still, it's probably within the price range of anyone who's getting into digital video, which is what this started as (i think).

^ yep you definetly dont have to pay that much.

Check around on ebay, I got both my cable and card for around 30 CDN.
