i know nothing about video cameras. my younger sister wants to get one for filming skiing. she doesnt want to spend a ton but at the same time doesnt want a piece of shit camera. whats a good camera within 500-1000$ that you would recomend for skiing? also please include your reasons. im going to start researching for her but id appreciate some help from ns.
 
does hd mean i need other hd software and things to upload to my computer. im retarded when it comes to cameras. i have no clue what too look for but yes, that camera looks nice and is only 489$
 
its not only 498, check resellerratings.com for any store online for buying cameras and video cameras, tehre are lots of scams. for legit prices, check pricegrabber.com

and HDV is like miniDV, but different compression. you need an editor which can handle HDV, the vista version of movie maker can, Vegas 6 and above i believe, ADobe Premier Pro 1.51 and above (aka, CS2 and CS3) and FCP can all handle HDV footage

dont get a gimmicky cheapo soccer mom hdv camera. you can spend about the same amount of money on a nice used 3ccd camera and you will get much higher quality shots.  

having hd resolution is worthless unless your watching it on an hdtv, and if your putting vids on the internet its just gonna be sd anyway.

 
500-1000, wow that a wide open field there. I would check out bhphotovideo.com or your local best buy. They usually have good stuff. BH usually has good deals and good packages. They sell both pro equipment and regular....something tells me you're gonna go regular.
 
the hv20 is definatly a good camera, its not a bad choice at all, but from the footage ive seen of both the hv20 and gl2 the gl2 still looks much better.  

i guess it is all personal preferance though.   the hv20 seems to have more "vibrant" colors than a gl2,  but that does not mean its better at all,  the gl2 can get amazingly unique colors.  

and as for sharpness,  if anything id say lots of sharpness is a bad thing, it just looks bad and amature to me.  the gl2 has a softer picture than most 3ccd cameras, and i think thats great.

the hv20 definatly would not be a mistake to buy,  but with a nice 3ccd camera like a vx2100, gl2 or dvx you are gonna be able to get just what you want and overall the picture just looks much more profesional in my opinion.

if your not spending like 5000+ on a HD camera, i think its just a waste, its not gonna be real hd, and it seems like more of a gimmick to make people buy their cameras, cause it says HDV on the side so soccer moms are gonna freak and think its so amazing.
