Vector mask?

Please, i dont get it. how does the vector mask work? and how can i use it? please, give some hints and an explanation. if ya know some other cool effects, share!

ummm. i dunno what you have.

but in fireworks mx, use the pen tool to trace around the area you want to vector, then select colors, bursh effects, whatever, and keep going, area by area. thats at least what i do.
