I was kind of digging it, but then the ending came and blew my mind. It was soooooooo well done

but Im confused

He calls tech support in the future when the Penalope Cruz character is already dead, and his money wont last forever, so he chooses to end the lucid dream? Tech support wasnt too clear on this...

Yo Tanaka, I dig this movie, and love the soundtrack. It introduced me to Jeff Buckley and Sigur Ros. Anyways, I'm not really sure what you are asking, could you elaborate on your question?

I guess Im saying I dont get the ending. Why does he wake up? why not keep living a lucid dream when he can control it and be with penalope?

My personal interpretation of Tom Cruise's situation at the end of the movie is this; once Tom Cruise's character experienced the painful realization that his perceived reality was nothing more than a "lucid dream" he was then faced with the choice to re-enter his artificial cognitive experience, or to find out what possibilities remained for him in the real world.

Similarities can be drawn between David Aames in Vanilla Sky and the world of The Matrix. Neo was given the choice to take the pill that would make him forget everything Morpheus had told him about the false reality, or the pill that would transport him to the "desert of the real". Perhaps after ending his lucid dream, David Aames may have been depressed with his reality and wanted to go back, (Especially for Penelope, damn she is gorgeous) kind of like Cypher when he struck a deal with the Agents to go back to the Matrix.

If I were in his shoes, I think I would want to at least see what the real world was like, it would be hard to go on knowing it was all a delusion...anyways, just my opinion man.

yeah thats exactly my interperation also but I just wasnt sure...

and the ending seriously had me in tears. I mean the cinematography, the music, when his whole life flashes before his eyes. sooooooooooooooooo fucking good.

I liked Top Gun just cuz it's such a perfect time-capsule of overbearing Reagan era American machismo, and I thought The Last Samurai was a well filmed movie.

Other than that, Tom Cruise kind of scares me. I think his mind is warped by his own brand of celebrity psuedo-philosophy. In a sense, he didn't have to act in Vanilla Sky, his life is a self-imposed lucid dream.

yeah but theres dozens of jocks trying to act badass at my school so I get a plentiful serving of that.

Hahaha. Top Gun is just so gung ho 80's style, but yeah meatheads are everywhere, they make me laugh.

My girlfriends roommate just started dating this guy, so funny, but he doesn't realize I am laughing at him, not w him. You know the type, huge belt-buckle w the pink polo shirt tucked in at the front, abercrombie clothes, puka shells, K-swiss shoes, hat turned backwards, tanning bed goggle line around his eyes, can't stop talking about high school sports and renting UFC videos, and the finishing touch of course, collar POPPED. Ahh shit, it makes me chuckle just describing him. My girlfriend gets mad at me for encouraging him, he thinks that I think he is "da bomb."

"ME AND SKYLER ARE GOING TO GO TAKE A FAT DIP IN MY STEPDAD'S TRUCK. CHAAAA.....FUCKING VARSITY"

yeeeeaaaaaaahhhhh they're so unbelievibly stupid its hilarious

Hahahaha, they seriously crack me up, deep down they must know they are ridiculous, they just think it's a way for them to find acceptance with the "bros and ho's"

Hahaha. Fuckin meatheads. I saw a bunch of jocks(prob all on the same hs football team) show up at a punk show one time, they just started taking swings at people and picking fight w random kids. Unfortunately for them, one of the local bands playing was like hardcore XXX and their crew was there ... anyways a brawl ensued and these jocks got pounced on by some straight edge m.f.ers w brass knuckles n shit. One of them left sobbing and cursing while the others carried him out, everyone was cheering. It was epic.

waaaaait a second

When he gets into the elevator, Tech Support says "we met about...150 years ago"

so Sophia in reality, really is dead.

How come he heard her go "Open your eyes" when he woke up from the lucid dream? perhaps that was just a memory from when she left the message on the phone? hmmmm...

I got like 3 quarters through it...I kept waiting for a conclusion and it never came, and I had to go. I havent had time to see the rest.

but alas, I like him in Vanilla Sky more.

well maybe the dream is supposed to start before he ever goes to the company offering the lucid dream- and then he dreams everything including the company and the dream- therefore he wakes up and no time has passed at all - and shes still there- hence her voice.

Vanilla Sky is pretty beast, but the entire movie is based off the original version which is in spanish. Its called Abre Los Ojos. You get to see Penelope Cruz's tits for an extended period of time in the spanish version...

that makes no sense because tech support explained when the splice began

plus he said he wanted to wake up

yeah but if tech support and the whole concept is in his mind then it does make sense. just roll back to changeover point to the accident or in the hospital.its like the matrix- if you're inside there's no way for you to prove that you're not in it.

so you're saying the tech support lied about how long he's been dreaming because his inability to control his lucidity made him lie?

I know the whole LE thing was part of the dream... he chose the splice the night after the nightclub, rememeber?

but you make a very good point. Perhaps they were wrong and all it took was balls to jump off the building, and he could live with Sophia happily in reality?

god this ending is so fucking good. I have it burned onto my comp and I watch it nearly every night.

I just downloaded it the other night, and i'm getting into it pretty hardcore.

On another note, does anyone know the name of the second song in the film? It's playing as he is running into times square.

I figured it out. That soundtrack listing doesn't have every song from the movie, but the song I was thinking of is from Rusholme with Love, by Mint Royale.

Jea that movie was fucking pimp. It was all so confusing until the very end. It was tied together soooo nicely. And you got to see Penelope's boobies.
