Vancouver Riot 2011

I'm damn proud of these people. Rioting is a democratic political act. They targeted police, banks and massive retail chains; all groups that people privately loath. Thumbs up to the real world Tyler Durden's.

Posted this in the other thread. I know it's slightly off topic, but this was Boston last night. I watched the game just outside the city and then walked in and filmed some of the celebrations afterwards. Missed some of the bigger ones further downtown, but it was still pretty cool to witness everything else.

Vancouver seems like a nice place.

this, i was at the screens with my girlfriend until the end of the second period, we left to avoid being grouped in with the people who just wanted to fuck shit up.

even before the rioting really started there was so much shit going on just in the crowds. the two of us were trying to get to the front on georgia and hamilton, and it got to the point where people were pushing so hard that it was seriously hurting people. i had a girl being pushed so hard against my back she couldnt breathe and passed out, her boyfriend, a few other guys and I tried to push back the crowd enough to pick her up, and we were hardly able to. things like this were happening throughout the crowds.

from there my girlfriend and I wandered through downtown and made our way back to granville, where we watched the rioting progressively get worse. the two of us saw about 4 different girl on girl fights, trashy slut vs goth/emo/scene girl over and over again, followed by most if not all of the trees lining granville getting pushed over and ripped out, which then led to a huge plume of tear gas/smoke and EVERYONE running away from the granville street bridge.

after we escaped granville we headed to alberni for dinner and met up with my dad who was at the game and casually walked through the rioting and shit fucking, because hes cool like that haha. on our way over we passed the louis vuitton store, where we watched two guys try to throw newspaper dispensers through the windows that wouldnt shatter, that were also backed up by security bars. once the two of them stopped because they couldnt break through the windows, we heard them say "lets try tiffany's across the street!" before that i honestly did not think these two could get much dumber, as tiffany's has vault-like front doors and i believe an armed guard sitting inside waiting for someone to try, as there are items the size of quarters that are close to, if not over $50k each haha.

from there we tried to explore more and head back towards the rioting on georgia, where the huge plumes of smoke were coming from, however the tear gas/whatever it was, was not worth walking back into, so we decided to meet back up with my dad and his friend for drinks and then head home.

it was a night i will never forget, both as an incredible and horrible experience, as i have never been so amazed and ashamed at the events that could occur in a city, and i would hope i never have to experience again. that was probably the most unsafe i have ever felt in vancouver, definitely the most unsafe i have ever felt in the downtown core

i hate to lump everyone in surrey as being a douchebag, but like 3/4 of the craigslist posts that are selling clearly stolen items are straight out of surrey.

My personal favourite part of the evening was the crowd chanting the national anthem while trying to break into the library. Only slightly ironic.

hahahahaha we were looking at that at work today, you have to be fucking retarded to post blatantly stolen items on craigslist the day after a riot......

that was a crazy fuckin night, although there was a sick "afterparty" at robson square in front of the art gallery. i was standing on top of one of the lions while a DJ played a live set out of a mobile shopping cart set up, and the stairs were packed with people. a ton of ns callouts actually, and i gave sean pettit directions to waterfront station. chug was mobbing around too

i'm glad i went but a group of my friends got a picture taken of them and its been all around the internet- clearly showing all of their faces and some evidence of slightly stupid shit they did. the whole social media thing is really really fucked up these days, with cellphone cameras and facebook/twitter.

This is just ridiculous, I'm pretty shocked to be honest. If there one city I'd expect to riot like that it wouldn't be Vancouver; especially for fuck all reasons. Very very bad rep for Vancouver.

Why r they rioting? They lost fare and square and rioting won't do anything but make them look like assholes

People showed up to watch the game with gasoline and gas masks. They were rioters, not hockey fans. They just wanted to fuck shit up.

And with that type of thing, it gets kind of contagious. People see that they can get away with anything and it brings out the worst in them.

Good. It's your right, or at least it should be if the right I'm not sure about Canada's policy on that. In the USA the police use tear gas for fun.

I read this also. Apparently she got plowed over by riot police and jacked her ankle up. He was was there to console her. Epic timing is epic.

It's was basically mass hysteria. Some guys came to fuck shit up and once a few people start the whole crowd follows. It's disgusting to tarnish a city's reputation like this. Makes Vancouver look straight up terrible.

vancouver's reputation is going to be fine, there was a riot in 94 and vancouver still won a bunch of most livable city awards and shit like that haha. vancouver is just going to be the center of attention of a while for a poor reason

Haha I love the Adicts and GBH. Watched a video of the riot and thought it was the middle east. What a shit show.

Ya it's really cool when people destroy public property for fun. Did you see the picture of the guy who was trying to defend his truck from getting burned and ended up getting the shit beat out of him when he tried to defend his truck. Im sure that guy is stoked that people decided to riot, to prove it could be done. What did this riot prove? It made Vancouver look like a hostile environment for one.

i pretty much agree with everything you have to say in general but i just gotta say that this was not black bloc. black bloc is when everyone wears the same colour clothing as to not be identified and to promote solidarity for a cause. if anything it was blue and green block. haha but seriously...it was a bunch of thugs, some 15 year old girls, drunk hockey fans, and a couple anarchists.

yeah i did my research AFTER posting that haha, fucked up. regardless it was organized anarchists to rile a few people up, and shit just snowballed from there.
