Manage Alerts | What Is This? LONDON, England (CNN) -- Vancouver is the world's most desirable place to live, according to a new survey, while Papua New Guinea's Port Moresby is at the other end of the scale.

The Canadian city, nestled on the Pacific coast, was one of four locations in that country to rank at the top of the Economist Intelligence Unit's livability survey, which looked at conditions in 127 cities.

The other top-ranking Canadian cities were Toronto, Calgary and Montreal.

Australia also fared well in the survey by the London-based group, with Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Sydney scoring high marks along with Vienna, Austria, and Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland.

The EIU study assessed nearly 40 indicators in five broad categories -- stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure

Its True, West vancouver is the Best place in the world to raise a family but its not for the poor

an average home in West Vancouver is $800,000 Canadian

I'm glad I was born here. It really is the best place to live.

haha my parents bought my house 20 years ago, for$ 300,000

yeah vancouver is a tight spot, but i've got nothing against the east either. i've travelled across canada many a time, staying with family and friends in every province, and i think if there was anywhere i'd like to grow up, raise a family, or retire, it'd for sure be ns/nfld/nb. they're such beautiful, clean, friendly places to live with nice beaches and awesome weather. if it were somewhere i'd look to make a career, start a business, settle down and live my life, it'd be in either vancouver, ontario, or calgary. montreal is a great place aswell, but not much opportunity for non-french folk.

Vancouver has one of the highest rate of crime and Drugs in North America

Vancouver's East Side is not good at all. By the Year 2010. We hope we can get most of the homless and drug e's off the street

...over half the population is asian cough. HONGcouver

All I gotta say is Vancitee is fuckin dope man, there aint a lot of places u can wake up go to the beach, then play 18 holes and then hit the slopes. And damn rights we have a drug problem, we grow by far the best marijuana on the planet and we all love to smoke it. In short Van's wurr it's at, warm winters in the city, awesome summers and it's jus a happenin place to live. All I would trade up is the party atmosphere in montreal, if we had that then this place would kill

i think the majority of the selection comittee must have been asian.

but vancouver is dope from what i've experienced. one of canada's most beautiful big cities, stuck in between the ocean and the coast mountains.

dope ass scenes going on there...it's a crazy city commerce-wise...but at the same time it definitely has the most ghetto area in canada. and it's extremely asian, therefore ridden with bad drivers. so yeah.

"and it's extremely asian, therefore ridden with bad drivers"- lanks

haha its really true. I saw it today when I was driving. I was at a 4-way stop and the person infront of my was asian and she went to turn left but the guy on the other said (another asian) goes forward and almost hits her!

god! I hate bad drivers

all i know is I live in the # 8th most desireable/best place in the u.s.

best places in canada? yea ny city has a higher population than all of canada...who cares about the canucks

an even better place to live then Vancouver is Victoria. If you are in Vancouver venture over to Vancouver Island.

^ I hope your kidding, Victoria is good if you wanna retire. Actually I wanna retire in Campbell river, its so nice there. And whoever said Vancouver was dirty, go to any city outside of North america, and you'll see what dirty means, Vancouver is fucking clean. It has the worst area drug-wise in Canada, but I mean it's along 10 blocks on one street, and it is not actually dangerous, they actually tell tourists to visit it because it's pretty safe, there's no violence. There are gansters, there are crazy punjabs, chiggers, surrey sluts, a huge number of asians but it's the greatest city to live in for sure because of the setting and there are so many things to do, way better than anywhere else

the best academic estimates have new york city at 17 million people. canada has roughly 32 million people. that's a big enough difference to justify me calling you out.

besides, who would want to live in new york city anyways?

same goes for toronto. ugghhh.

pshh don't be hating on toronto

and the reason there is so much asians in vancouver is from when the where building the CPR and the got asians to do the nitroglicarin and shit and cuz they worked for soo cheap and then when they finished they settled in that area

wow in the top 10, 4 australian cities, yeah, then 3 canadian cities, yeah, looks like aus and canada the best places to live

In health we watched a movie about this herion addict girl who lived on the streets in Vancouver. It was messed up.

yeah chinatown and east hastings especially at the corner of main is truly a ghetto, but now they got safe injection sites where they give out free needles. Look in a back alley anytime during the day and you're almost guaranteed to see someone shooting up. Last year I lost my passport so I went to the police and the offices are located at the worst corner of town, where everybody is litterally fucked up, but i didnt know that, so the woman at the desk once I was done made me get a cab to leave.

vancouver is a damn nice city i like it alot it looks like it has great night life especially on robson st. beauty.

vancouver is my favorite city. no doubt it has its bad sections, but its a beautfiul city. those others in the top 10 are top notch too

What's wrong with asians? There's some HOT asian girls out there, and they've added yummy ingredients to our food. And I haven't met one asian person who didn't work hard and wasn't rad in some way. Ok, there's some assholes, but I've met way more shitty white people than asians, so there.

And btw, the ghetto might be ugly, but it's safe enough to walk down at night. Everyone is too high to fuck with you. The drug problem in Vancouver is a societal problem involving many huge issues that you can't just solve by arresting dirt poor homeless users. Here's a question you fucking moron: Why is that stretch of East Hastings so ghetto? Might it have something to do with its proximity to the port, which is where most of the heroin is imported into Vancouver? And while we're at it, where do all the profits from the drug sales go? Not the small time dealers, idiot. Why not arrest those who profit from drugs, instead of those who die from them?

Back to West Van for you Mattman...how's the blow treatin' ya? Snooooooooooooooooooort and SMILE, pretend to be happy!

See, I can make up silly, completely untrue stereotypes too!

Vancouver is hands down the best place to live in Canada. I could have gone anywhere and chose Van. I don't regret it.

i went on a cruise 1ce to alaska and i had to goto vancouve rto get on the ship and vancouver was so nice and clean and cool :)

vancouver is an amazing place. lots of sushi, beautiful women and prots, rec beach, close to lots of amazing skiing, head shops left right and center...

i think i would still prefer west bank area in the okanogan, its much prettier there.

robson street doesn't have nightlife. Its just restaurants and shops. It'd be nice if they did have bars and clubs though, like M street in Georgetown. Too bad our city council is a bunch of left-wing hippies who turn down the most environmentally sensive building concieved for the city because it was a walmart, erect massive ugly red steel sculptures, and decide to make traffic worse by turning 2 lanes on a major bridge into bike lanes. fuck.

whoops, starting ranting too much and forgot my point. the zoning is bullshit on robson street and doesn't allow for bars/clubs. one of the many many reasons i hate vancouver city council.

Actually the city I live in (approx 20,000 people) has the highest drug usage rate and highest teen pregnancy rate in B.C. Neighbouring town Smithers, B.C. has the highest crime rate in B.C.

But yeah, I don't walk around my city at night alone, but I would, and do, with friends, but it's not nearly as fucking scary as parts of Vancouver.

One time we were doing an urban session and I had all my camera gear out and there was a video camera and lots of expensive ski equipment and a bunch of drunk natives came out and were talking about some fight they were going to so we had to be really nice to them so they wouldn't kill us and eat our ears.
