Vancouver advice

as i am sure you all already know (because i have posted about this before), i am coming to whistler for a few days of skiing in a few weeks. thanks to everyone who helped me find a cheap place to stay!

i come to you with another question:

i am spending a few days in vancouver as well, before i head up to whistler. do any of you have recommendations about good neighborhoods to stay in while i am there? i am young (26, which most people consider to be young but i guess on newschoolers i am old), and like as much art and rock and roll as possible.

suggestions?

cheap in whistler: boot lodge, fireside lodge, UBC hostel, creekside hostel (across from husky)

vancouver, good neighborhoods? you going to rent hotels in particular neighborhoods? if you are staying in van and want to have fun on the social scene, stay downtown, being on or near granville street is good

Vancouver isn't a big city. If you stay on one end you can get to the other in about 25 minutes. So just find somewhere to stay that's cheap and are close to busses... which is pretty much anywhere.

Samesun hostel on Granville - close to everything. Get your breakfast at the Chinese restaurant 2 blocks away.

Stay at the Lynnwood Inn in North Van. It's real classy. And by classy I mean it's full of natives, bikers and gnarly old cougars...

nope.

But then, finding a hotel in vancouver where illegal activity doesn't go down is like trying to find a hooker that doesn't have an STD.

I stayed at this hostel just off east hastings once, I wouldn't recommend doing that.

I know there's quite a few hotels either on or just off granville st that'll put you right in the middle of all the action, and for probably not that much money. Or the Samesun hostel ON granville, but that's a hostel, and getting lice is overrated.

yeah, i'm staying at the UBC in whistler, so i'll save my potential lice/bedbugs/etc for then... i'm a little freaked out about it, but i stay in sketchy places near mountains all the time because i don't live near any, so i guess my doctor will sort me out when i come home!

maybe I should rephrase the question: any suggestions of places in vancouver that aren't a million dollars (canadian) that also don't have bugs?

cheers.

THe ivenhoe on Main is right beside the greyhound statation on main, it's only $14 a night and you can inject drugs in the washrooms that have no doors,

cambie hostel seems dirty too, right downtown. Hostel on Granville, then everything else downtown is expensive. Look in the kits area, it's nice and only a 10min bus ride to downtown

What can I say, I win at life... and yes PBR is wonderful stuff (which they stock in marketplace bcl)but how did that come up?

^yeah, I've bought it the past 2 weekends, it's been springing up everywhere, even in the city in lil cold beer and wine stores. Hopefully a sign of things to come...

is it cheap?

I still think you can do a motel or a 3 star hotel on granville for pretty cheap, and it'll be more fun than staying somewhere in the fucking suburbs. It won't be nice, but it'll be clean, safe, and probably won't have drug addicts shooting up inside. Outside for sure, but not inside.

granville's seemed pretty mellow evertime ive been there. i wouldnt worry about crackheads and crime so much.

craig...... wtf?

like.... ummm... were in the business of welcoming tourists here. Not sending them back home with HIV.

^doesn't bother me, i used to live in hell's kitchen in NYC. after three years of that, every other city i have visited seemed tame.

chateau granville is good. tell them your intrawest staff and you want the "club shred" deal...just say you forgot your pass.
