I don't know a whole lot about it, but I know 2 things: 1. Expensive, although its some of the best on this planet, I've heard it's as expensive as fuck. 2. Valdez itself is a really small town, that thrives mostly on fishing.
Bringing this thread back. Might have a pretty once in a lifetime opportunity in Valdez this winter..but I do not know much about the town itself. Anyone have any insight on Valdez life? Looks like there aren't really resorts nearby, is touring popular there or is it all about those heli's? Any input on Valdez would be much appreciated.
Touring and snow machining are super popular in Thompson pass just outside Valdez, there's also a road run that's got some nice drops and tons of natural features that you can lap with a couple people and a car.
Like everyone else has said Thompson pass is sick: lots of great terrain, and easy access. But, because of its proximity to the interior it does get hammered by gap and outflow winds. Here's a blog post I did from a day on Thompson pass a few years ago: http://www.mikerecords.com/2012/04/more-valdez-bluebird-492012.html
