Vail or Breck? Where do I want to live for a season?

Hi all.

I created a thread a couple of days ago (https://www.newschoolers.com/web/forums/readthread/thread_id/382902/) about some pros/cons of the resorts included in the epic ski pass, and now we have decided to either stay in Vail or Breck. Since the last thread went off topic I decided to create a new one :)

We are six swedish dudes that are going to spend 4 months (Jan-April) in CO, just ski and have a good time and not work. We are mostly into powder and big mountain skiing, but park is always fun from time to time.

What speaks for either of the places? We have a lot of questions, since its kinda hard when you like on the other side of the atlantic, and you dont know anyone who has been to either of the places.

We have noticed that the rents are a bit higher in Vail, and that you have to live a bit outside, like east vail, where in Breck we have found a couple of houses with ski in/ski out avaliability.

From the last thread I understand that Vail is a great overall mountain, having good park/trees/pow, and that Breck has a great park. What about the big mountain skiing in Breck? Hiking possibilities?

Which place has to most skibums?

Does the bus lines in Vail/Breck work ok, or are they always crowded? We are going to buy a car, but if there is a free bus we would like to take it. How hard is it to go from Vail to Breck by bus, and back?

What about the parking, is it expensive?

Where is the best night life? Is the beer cheaper in Breck than Vail? What is the cost of a 33cl beer?

Supermarkets in the nearby?

Would be very greatful for answers!

Cya in either Breck or Vail in a couple of months :)

Sorry this i off topic, but you never answered my question. What do you do for a living? haha.

That being said, I havent had a chance to live in either of the places, but have visited and would say Breck has a nicer village, more quant and Vail is alot more classy and expensive (go figure)

Hehe, we are working in Stavanger, Norway as fork lift drivers on a food warehouse named ASKO, earning like 30-40 bucks an hour :) So if you want to earn some cash, this is the place :)

My vote is Breck, just because it would be so awesome to live in a ski in/ski out place. Just wake up in the a.m. and walk to slopes.

Damn, that's not bad at all.

I'm coming out to Summit in December for 2 weeks, I'll send you guys a message when I come out there.

I'd say Breck because the rent is a bit cheaper, you get to live closer to the mountain and you have more mountains in a closer range. Loveland, Keystone, A-Basin and Copper are all really close to Breck. If you're going to get a car then Vail isn't too far of a drive from Breck for some sick powder days.

breck for sure

ski in ski out

cheap rent

heavy hitting mountains that much closer, for a little variety

plus vail isn't too far...

Breck for the already mentioned reasons and for the fact that you would be closer to keystone so you can night ski occasionally.

I would stay in Breck. If you are staying in the towns then rent will be a little cheaper in Breck. If you have a car Vail is an hour away. The buses are alright at both, I haven't ever taken the bus from Breck to Vail though.

Parking in Vail is pay almost everywhere.

You can park for free in Breck in most spots.

The cheapest 12 ounce beer (I think thats about 33 centiliters) is 50 cents if you buy a 30 rack at the liquor store. The key to Breck is City Liquor's 99 cent Mickey's tall boys. But their 4.99 MD 20/20 kind of outweigh that.

Vail has better hiking/bc terrain. Brecks terrain isn't that great, but inbounds at Vail isn't that great either. Both of their snowfalls are lacking. Breck's park is the best in the world.

Probably more ski bums per capita in Breck, at least they seem dirtier, drunker, drugged up and lazier than Vail's

Definitely hit vail up as much as you can on powder days. I love skiing vail because for the most part its a bunch of fucking rich as gapers and their trophy wives who can't change the expressions on their face anymore from excessive amounts of bowtox. They all pay 92 dollar lift tickets to ski down groomers leaving some really fun parts of the mountain, and the mountain is fucking huuge, untouched for us. That being said for the same reason of overcrowding rich gapers i wouldn't want to live in vail, breck has a great vibe to it and while i havent been able to stay their much it seems like a much more ski bum friendly atmosphere.

if you want overall skiing vail is gonna be better. breck is pretty flat but their park is sick. you could always live in breck then just drive the 30 or 40 mins to vail

i just moved to breck and it is definutly a sicker place than vail because you have breck and keystone for park and some epic shreding at a basin so you basicly have everything in one area

Breck for sure, my sister lived there for 2 years and loved it.

and yeah rents cheaper, you can get employee housing if you work for the mountain, the places are cheaper to eat and stuff, and the hill is sick. vail has good skiing and all, but breck is a better place to live id say. chicks are hotter at vail though.

if you like to ski park live in the breck area with vail only being 35 mins away on i-70. if the pow pow is your thing stay in the vail beaver creek area... for some reason vail and the beav get dumped on way more than summit county.. prolly having something to do with vail pass.

You can't beat the town of Breck, but if your looking for the big mountain and snow head out to Vail. Though theres a crazy ratio of girls to guys in Breck. Everywhere I go i'm crazy outnumbered...just moved here

for good terrain in breck. make sure you check out everything under the new gondola. they opened it last year and it is SICK!! rivals anything in vail.

You CAN beat the town of Breck and the winner is Vail.

Breck - pretty big destination for tourists and vacationers. LEGIT park, but pretty frustrating mountain layout. Pretty poor big mountain skiing and definitely not your first choice on powder days. You'll for sure buy a snowmobile if you live here. Pass prices are fair

Vail - even bigger tourist and vacation destination but way hotter girls. Park is respectable and located off by itself, helps keep newbs out. Big mountain skiing is real, super versatile terrain but CAT TRACKS galore. If you buy a snowmobile here, you'll only ride Vail pass and flip the bird to resort skiing forever. It's expensive

Way to go: Vail. Why? Way hotter girls, way more legit nightlife and Vail just sounds better than Breck. Think about it, because you're only on the hill for 8 hours a day anyway.

when i was out in the bars in vail i noticed there were even fewer women, the hottest being the bartender. also, vail's park was a joke last year, the jumps were crap, the biggest one being about 20 ft. the rails were alright, and they started to set up the bigger jumps, but then just left piles of snow there all year (i know this as i went by it on my way to the pow.) vail and the beave do have better pow skiing, though neither are outstanding, i would suggest somewhere else if that's your main goal, as there are many places with more pow, are steeper, and have more cliffs than vail or any of the summit resorts...check out squaw and alpine, seems like exactly what you're looking for, as both have decent parks to go along with gnar terrain, or check out alta/snowbird...park city isn't very far.

I haven't been to Vail but from a European perspecive Breck has:

- the most ridiculously awesome park

- no good freeriding

- lots and lots of wind which blows the powder away

- awesome town

- NO girls

- super close to Keystone and Copper which are really really cool

there are girls in breck, definitely as many as vail. there's also some ok freeriding if you know where to look though its nothing special.

O yeah they do. Gold King has 20-30ft jumps or so that would be perfect for learning and the rails were not too bad either. And to whoever said to ride the stuff under the gondola, i completely agree. Also, keystone is a like 10 minute bus ride away and they have a nice mix of park there and I like the outback there too.

Cool, thanks man. +k

I mainly want to ski pow and BC so I'll mostly be at Vail, but when I wanna do park I'll head over to Breck. I love the idea of an epic pass.

ya vail is soo expensive... i picked up on that in the 3 days i was there... breck is sooo dope cause there are a few other mountains so near! and u can rip keystone at night with a breck pass, making breck such a good spot to be!

Having lived at both Breck and Vail before I will be living in Vail this year. Why?:

- way hotter chicks. breck has some chicks, but most of them are pretty haggard chubby smelly snowboarders. There is also a huge contingency of bro-brahs that travel in packs of like 50 going to the bars which can get kinda old

- vails side country is some of the best terrain in the state (but you are gonna have to gain someones trust to have them show you around. Whatever you fucking do don't just follow people with packs out the gate if you don't know where you are going. Happens all the time and its fucking NOT COOL. very dangerous slide zones)

- we have sleds so will be at Vail Pass a ton.

- we found a sick house on the creek. 20 second walk to the shuttle bus, and we can ski to the front door from the west vail trees.

- more legit bar scene than breck

So yeah, move to breck.
