Vail is for sale

so there was an article in the post today about the well-known fact that vail has been on the market for a few months now. two final bids have been placed by buyout groups, one by the texas pacific group (owner of burger king, j. crew, and continental airlines) and the other by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (owner of nabisco and other companies). no word on which bid will be accepted. analysts say that the buyer will most likely split up and sell off the company's assests individually.

this means no more 5 mountain passes.

just thought everyone should know. it's too early to determine how this will effect maintenance and construction of parks and terrain at vail-owned resorts.

then i let it run for awhile, just because i can.

no but 70-80 bucks a day for nothing steeper than 35 degrees. I couldn't care about how great the snow is or the park is. I'd rather go to snowbird and spend $40 a day, and $30 for hotel, and have better snow and an airport 30 miles away.

how about all of us from NS pitch in and buy it together, I got five on it! Think how sweet it would be to have an official NS mountain!

if you cant afford to come to vail, dont come. Vail doesnt want you. Why do you think the parks suck most of the time? The people with mad money dont want to ski in the parks.

As far as the nothing above 35degrees, you might want to cough up the cash and come ride. I'll show you some shit in vail that will make you piss your pants.

As far as splitting up, it doesnt look like that is going to happen very soon. Clauses in the contracts that Vail Resorts as a company has with keystone and breck extend a few more years. New owners cannot change this, they can simply choose to renegotiate with the other resorts when the time comes.

Hi, you are all dopes. Vail Mountain (resort) is not for sale. There is a rumor that all of Vail Resorts (the company) is for sale (at an effective price of $1.2 billion).

The 5 mountain pass that we all love comprises the 5 mountains of VAIL RESORTS!! If it changes hands, it would not affect us particularly. Also, free market forces would prevent the acquiror from jacking up lift prices (at least limiting them to Aspen prices).

Anyway, the great likelihood is that this is a rumor. If not, it won't matter much anyway.

See, I did learn something from my economics class in Boulder.

yes it does affect the 5 mountain passes. if you currently have them you can renew them for next season but cannot get one if you've never had one. this trend is leading many to believe that in a few years it will be done away with. as the article said, to buy the company and just run it how it is would be a waste. dismantiling makes the most sense. just watch and wait.

and the thing about the lift prices is also wrong. vail already jacks up their prices way above aspen. prices increased in the 2003/2004 season from the previous season and made vail's tickets the most expensive in the country. i think it was $85 per day to ski at vail resorts. at aspen i believe the price was $72 for a one day ticket.

It won't happen - the shareholders have a super-majority. The insiders, even the Apollo group (lead by Leon Black) don't have a financial interest in breaking it up - - it would be bought lock-stock-and-barrel or not at all).

'who cares if they cut vail up its to expensive any way hopefuly it'l lower prices if not go to a-basin its awesome'

It will probably do anything but lower prices. New owners would want the biggest profit possible, or they woulden't buy it.

Vail has some really steep and deep shit, you just have to know where to look for it. blue sky basin has some really good stuff, steep too. that freeskier article was fucking wrong, hardly any flat shit except for outruns from outer and inner mongolia

Yeah Vail has some good shit on the back side and in blue sky. If you can't afford it, don't go and stop complaining.

lizzibeth, you are wrong. The Vail daily price is the same as Aspen's, so they are not 'way more'. Both resorts try to maintain the same price b/c they are percieved as the top level luxury ski towns in North America. $75 bucks a day, I live there. Don't post shit you have no idea about. There is a problem on this site where people misinform others with their bullshit stories.

yes but to me vail is nothing. i dont want to pay $75 to ski for 8 hrs. i want to buy a pass for 300-400 and ski all year. it just seems like vail is shit too. icy, crap, and rich stuck up bastards too good for others. and from what i have heard from others going its NOT nearly worth the $75/day. i wanna ski vail badly but ill never go due to high price. so right there they just lost me coming and gettting a sale. not to say it will hurt them but i bet if they dropped into the range of most other resorts they would definately get a more diverse group of skiers coming. not just rich fucks.

Vail does not want a diverse group coming to ski. We like that people visit and drop $10,000-$30,000 a week for accomodations and buy $15 burgers on the mountain. That is why we can hand out warm chocolate cookies when you get off the slopes. Any resort that wants to make money, strives to be like Vail or Aspen. Of course the old guys that sit on the Board of Directors want the private jets flying in to their resorts and families of 5 or 6 spending up to $100,000 on a vacation. These are the people that tip the waiters, bartenders, and concierge ski bums that live in town. They help out the micro economy in town. If you owned a ski resort company, you too would want this. Regular folks can ski regular resorts.

Oh yeah, it takes a while for 5000 + acres to get icy D-loc. You would be hard pressed to find a day with the types of conditions you described. The rich people ski the main trails on the front side. There are 3 sides to Vail Mountain.

radioripper... thats fine and all. im rich, and im saying im never going ot vail. its not that i dont have the money. fuck i just dropped well over $1,100 on a sack the other day. MONEY IS NO ISSUE, get that?

im saying vail is total shit compared to Alta, Snowbird, Whistler, Mammoth, and many many more.

fuck i got a season pass to alta for $375. and it has 100X better snow, 100X better atmosphere, 100X better terrain. i could have skied a measly 5 times at vail... 5 FUCKING TIMES. right now i have what like 170 days to ski for $375.

it just makes you look like an idiot to actually pay vails prices.

fuck whistler is by far one of the best places to ski, and you can do it year round. plus you have NO FUCKING GOVERNMENT RUNNING DOWN UR BACK ON EVERY LITTLE MISTAKE U MAY MAKE. you dont have the laws and dumbfounded americans to deal with.

just perfection.

so yeah let me move to vail and be broke to ski so shit that really isnt that good. sounds like a plan my man. im packing as we speak so i can break the check book ever second i have.

or would i rather move to SLC and just skis Alta, in my mind a perfect resort for all aspects of skiing.

sure you may not think alta is all that or the best but it sure as hell beats out vail.

hell my shitty resort perfect north beats out vail any day.

I am not saying that Vail is better than anything, I am saying that they have successfully attracted the clients that they wanted. Plus, the 5 mountain pass out here for $330 is a better deal than anything anywhere else, period. It is not even a point to argue. I love Alta, Snowbird, Mammoth, and Whistler. I have skied each of them numerous times. My point was not that Vail is the best (although I love it), it was that their business plan has worked. Then again, I don't expect too much from someone who seems so classless and uneducated.
