I am buying a helmet cam and i was wondering if VIO was the better company to go with. i know they are quite good because they are official helmet cam of TGR but is that anything to go by?

take a digital camera and duck tape it to your helmet. be sure to cover the whole camera except the record button and lens (to prevent water damage). finally cover the whole camera with plastic wrap.

i already did that but then the sweat from my hardcore skiing caused a malfunction and lit my helmet on fire. that is why i need a new helmet

Read that thread. POV review/compare. You’ll see that the

GoProHD is the preferred camera on NS. Better quality, half the cost of the V.I.O.

-AND-

FYI

there's a group buy for the GoProHD going on that ends today (Fri OCT 23 2009).

I see that you're new. So next time try using the search bar first. Typing "POV" in searching the forums would have got you here.

ive used both, and i would say get the gopro. The VIO is sweet and all, but its kind of bulky. You have to have a big battery pack in your jacket with a wire runing up to your helmet where the lens is mounted. Its kind of a hassle to get it setup in your suit and its fucking expensive. The gopro is sweet. It works better if you get the chest mount. Its wayyy cheaper route then the VIO and IMO its better.

The VIO is alright. Its really waterproof, which is good if you're going to be getting face shots all of the dam time, but its retardedly expensive for a standard def camera that only shoots in 4/3 reso.

I got to try out the Contour HD from VholdR last year though and it was fucking LEGIT. Its not severly waterproof, but you can always put a baggie over it. you can shoot in really sick HD, and you can even shoot in like 60fps for slow mo and stuff, so its pretty freakin sick. Its really easy to set up, and work with, and all you have to do to turn it on and off is slide this slider thing on the top. Really sweet. Plus, its 300 bucks, so you can get 2 of them for less than 1 VIO to play around with.

I just preordered the gopro HD after considering the contour.
While I dislike the form of the gopro unit it's still better (in my opinion) over the contour.
First, image quality. I've watched HD video from both units and found the contour to focus on the center of the shot and blur/distort the rest of the shot. Conversely, the gopro shots are clear throughout. There are not many contour snow shots but take a look at them - they look terrible. The shots are WAY WAY over exposed even on cloudy days.
Second, the strength of the gopro is better than the contour. I'm going to use mine for skiing and biking and will certainly fall on it at one point. I'd rather have a camera with a protective casing to keep it going. Also, I ride powder predominately and could see water damage occurring to the contour if I fell in deep snow.
Third, the gopro has the awesome continuous photo setting which could be neat.
Fourth, the gopro has great audio. I find the contour to be overwhelmed by the wind.
Hope that helps.

true.. the contour sucks for audio... and wind... and waterproofness.

I didnt see a huge problem with the shots i took using it though. it was pretty clear thru and thru. maybe it wasnt set up right? eh.. whatevs the gopro's legittt too.

personally i hate the angle the go pro cameras create on the top of your helmet and i have witnessed a branch smash a go pro camera on the top of someone's helmet. i like the small profile of the contour and vio cameras. the contour is the obvious smallest with only the camera unit and no cables or anything and it still has the goggle strap mount which is best for skiing
both the vio and contour wash out when skiing into the sunlight, the contour probably worse, but that can be ignored or corrected with a homemade filter or (hopefully) an add on filter from one of the companies soon
i have a contour mainly because i didn't like the gopro quality or mount but i didn't want to pay 600 for a vio. the downsides are definitely wind, you can't hear shit, but just put music over the edit, and the lack of waterproofing. but it's super easy to center, stable, seems pretty strong, and light. it's more towards the level of the vio, yet only 100 bucks more than the gopro, so it's kind of a good compromise
i also think the quality and fps are better on the contour, it's just not quite as high performance for skiing. if you really care about wind noise and extreme waterproofing, spend the extra for the vio, but if you want a decent hd cam that's light, easy to use, and will hold up with plenty of snow hitting it as long as you're not swimming in it, get the contour
the gopro seemed like a good price point option until the contour came out, if bought in the right place, it's like 50 bucks more and a whole lot better

im gonna go with the contour hd and see how that goes simply because it has the same shooting quality as the gopro only it doesnt look retarded and i'l see how that works but if it breaks due to lack of waterproofness i can by a gopro and i will still have paid less for both then i would have for a V.I.O
