A friend and i copped an airbnb outside of pc for a trip in January, i still have yet to buy passes to any resorts. Any locals or pc experts know a good way to pick a resort if i’ve never been there before?

I'd say check out as many resorts as you can hit, just all depends on what kind of terrain you want to ski.

Yeah ski LCC (Alta/Bird) if you’re looking for natural terrain to get sendy on. PC if you ski mostly park.

I second this. Utah basically has 3 main ski regions- there is Park City which has of course Park City Resort and the others like Canyons etc. Park City has a really good terrain park but the other resorts are really not worth it.

Big Cottonwood Canyon has Brighton and Solitude. Brighton has some decent trees and an ok park and Solitude has some cool back county type stuff, the lift setup is weird though so I dont recommend visiting unless you really get to know the mountain.

Little Cottonwood canyon has Alta and Snowbird. If you are into back country type skiing these two resorts are the place to be. I never skied Alta but did a few seasons at Snowbird and that mountain is on another level. There are literally 4 different faces of the Snowbird mountain each with a different feel and terrain with some of the scariest lines in Utah although the Alta guys might disagree.

Upper Cottonwood Canyon has Brighton and Solitude. Brighton has some decent trees and an ok park and Solitude has some cool back county type stuff, the lift setup is weird though so I dont recommend visiting unless you really get to know the mountain.

Canyons/pc is huge and isnt too crowded. Tons of terrain and pc has great parks

Thats pretty much all PC has going for it is good parks, their terrain is below average compared to other resorts in utah.

Have you skied at other resorts in Utah? Like ya what you're just described is a fun area but it's makes up 2% of their terrain, PC side off Jupiter and mcconkeys has some fun stuff too. But you go anywhere in the cottonwood canyons and you get this kind of terrain everywhere, not on one of 20 lifts ya know?

Might be a bit far if you're staying near PC, but on a good powder day, especially if it falls on a weekend, it's worth considering driving up to Snowbasin instead of the cottonwood canyons, mainly to avoid the crowds. The cottonwood canyons have great terrain, but holy fuck the crowds.

I have heard good things about Snowbasin. Agreed on the crowds, especially with so many people moving to UT lately. I remember even a few years ago being at Snowbird and having 30 people standing and waiting for the gates to drop on the back bowls and having it get skied out in an hour.

Yeah, I recently moved to Utah (3 million people and 14 small resorts) from Savoie, France which has like 500,000 people and around 50 resorts (much larger resorts too). So the crowds and the limited lift available terrain has been a bit of a shock to me tbh. Never felt the need to skin up once in France, but here you don't have a choice if you like skiing powder.

On the bright side Utah gets more consistent snowfalls, and touring is pretty cool, so it's all good.
