just heard about this. sounds like it was a wild day up in the mountains. i know this is one of the first storms but people have to be safe! i know all the snow has been laying up there for a while before this storm, only making it a slippery slope for the new stuff to fall on... this is most certainly not a great way to set things off. will be looking out for more details on this one

cheap reapo newschoolers you gotta get that avy setup complete in order to hike outbounds/closed resorts. keep yourselves safe and spend that extra cash, it's worth your life. if you can't afford it, don't risk it. use your heads and buy and pass at brighton if you need that line of snooowwwwww.
 
Just having gear isnt enough. Wont do you any good if you dont know how to use it, and are still skiing recklessly in avvy terrain.

But yeah, horrible to hear about already. Everyone be safe out there, not just Utah folks. Remember if theres enough snow to ski theres enough snow to slide!
 
in the articles they mention the people caught...note the age, 40 year olds as not having proper gear either. lay down from an easy smack on "jiblets" i would love to see an actual beacon count on everyone who went up today.
 
That's the latest I'm seeing around the 'net. So all the calls of 'inexperienced noobs with no gear' can go to hell, whether or not there were other people on the hill who may or may not have been up to the conditions.

they were just telling people to safe, not saying that the skier who died wasn't. how about you go to hell.

Esp since the reports I've read say that he had no gear, and that doesnt sound like Jamie. But if it is RIP.
 
ive heard it from many different people but a few different news reports say it was a pair of snowboarders.

KSL says the victims name was matthew jamie pierre from big sky, montana (jamie was from minnesota i believe)

Deseret News says it was a snowboarder

way confusing but it would be so goddamned sad if it really was jamie. the guy was not only a complete badass for doing the things he did but was also a really chill guy. Got to shoot with him a few days during seasons past and he acted extremely humble and professional about his lifestyle. this blows.
 
Im hearing it was Jamie. So sad. Huge loss for the skiing community. +vibes to his family.
 
Two men in their 30s left the closed Alta ski area with the intent to ride the well known terrain of Alta and Snowbird. Neither ski areas are open yet and have yet to conduct any avalanche control within their boundaries. We interviewed the victim's ski partner. While neither had any rescue gear or formal avalanche training, they were both expert skiers and new the terrain well. They continued to Snowbird via Baldy and accessed the Peruvian Cirque to gain the Gad Valley. Rescue reports indicated that they had likely triggered another slab avalanche prior to the victim triggering the fatal one. The partner did not recall hearing any collapses or whumphs in the snowpack, however.

With the partner watching, the victim dropped into the slope, immediately triggereing the slide. He was carried hundreds of feet through steep rocky terrain and reportedly went over a small cliff band and came to a stop only partially buried. The partner called for a rescue, alerting both the Snowbird Ski Patrol and Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, who subsequently accessed and evacuated the victim.
 
Gear doesnt mean shit if you dont know how to use it. Knowing how to identify avy prone areas and avoiding them in dangerous conditions is leagues more valuable than a probe, shovel and beacon in your backpack.
 
it's so messed up out there right now. if you don't know, don't go. we had a party near us trigger a 250' wide up to 20" deep slide today. especially with alta being closed and the skier compacted terrain not being skiable anymore, just stay out if you're not 100% confident in your decision making.
 
Jesus freaking christ. I love skiing and all but damn people. Chill the hell out and wait for the conditions to get good before you go out. Its not worth dieing for in my opinion.
 
So sad. SIP. If it can happen to a pro like Jamie, it can happen to anyone. Take the time, invest the money, take an avalanche safety class.
 
please dont assume that having a beacon (and shovel and probe) makes you safe. dont just go up and cruise around. take an avvy class, learn how to dig pits and read terrain. otherwise you are endangering not just yourself, but others as well, especially in a place as crowded as LCC.

I'm tempted to go to the store this week and get myself some avy gear and take some classes. I won't be really venturing out into any BC area or anything but that sense of being prepared for when shit does hit the fan in in-bounds controlled zones would be a very nice.
 
me and my group were planning on skiing gad valley today around 1, i didnt feel comfortable with the snowpack so we decided not to ski it. the slide that got jamie ended up happening around 3. theres alot of really big what ifs after hearing the news.
