UTAH-is this THE winter...

all signs are pointing to Utah being the place to be this winter, namely the fact they have 160 inch plus!-I will be out there this winter so whats the best backcountry spot to hit, and one other place you allways here that 'you have to go there' (specific spots on the mt..)

 
well almost 200 inches so far actually just drive up little cottonwood canyon for good spots. Also ski the mountain across from the alta wildcat parking lot 'Mt. Superior' if your in good enough shape to hike it.

Once I get my beacon and the avy danger is low I wanna hike up there and find a line I could ski without dying.

alta and snowbird have good powder and snowbird has a prety good park. snowbird if you go up to baldy there is this sweet 20ft clif that you can hit.(i 360 it)

prak city has the best park if you want to go there

 
That's right nuckas... Utah is the place to be. I decided that Utah is extremely superior over Thanksgiving break. If you skied at Alta, or Snowbird over that weekend, you know what I mean.

 
A 20 foot cliff on baldy you say!! No way....I wasnt aware there were any cliffs on baldy...Go figure!

 
No Utah isnt gonna be good this year I would stay home and not come visit the parks are lame and the big mountain is nothing. Stick to vermont

ya vermont is good...utah got 4 or 5 feet in october they said its almost the most that theyve ever opened on the mtn before thanksgiving so this year should be great out there

im a long time rider at jay, heading to utah the begining of january for my first time ever out west, cant fucking wait

hey is there any good backcountry in the park city area or should i just make the trip from there to little cottonwood. also how far is the trip from park city to alta/snowbird in the winter?

Guys.....its a 20 foot cliff. There are about a million cliffs at snowbird anywhere from 5-300 feet. Thanks for the tip though!

 
two part question: is there anywhere at Alta,Snowbird,solitude that you are required to have a beacon/probe/shovel etc.? Second how big would you say the biggest in bounds cliff hit?

 
No to the beacons...but youre a moron if you go out of bounds without one. Biggest in bounds cliff that has been hit?? I dont know, id say over 100 feet for sure.

 
yeah cliffs galore, and stay out of the backcountry unless you know what you are doing. you don't want to die in a slide. that would suck!!!!!

landmines are a huge problem. Back when we fought world war I in little cottonwood canyon the russians spread land mines by plane over north central utah bascially your dumb if you walk around without a metal detector.

From the base of little cottonwood to park city is a 45 minute drive. You absolutely must go to Alta and Snowbird though, unless you are a park rat and prefer park city. They get a lot more snow at alta and snowbird and the snow is lighter cause they are at a higher elevation by a couple thousand feet i believe. If you go to Utah, it is the back country and steeps and cliffs and that scene that you MUST experience...ski park a little, but you can go elsewhere for that.

I recommend right under the supreme lift, alf's high rustler, and definately devil's castle for some great in-bounds skiing.

Snowbird's mineral basin is also amazing when it isnt skied off, so if they get snow its great. Also hit up gad chutes, upper cirque, and i think its called peruvian gultch or something for some good stuff at snowbird.

Another good mountain is in big cottonwood and is a lot less known than all the other mountains...solitude. good skiing, last time i was there, weak park.

Well if you unfamilar to the area you should always probe the landing and hit it on the next pass. Yes there are rocks.

Four years ago I know some dude jumped a cliff 100+ at alta and landed himself in Powder magazine.

I forget where the cliff was though.

Go to alta and hit stadium jump. If you go full speed down the approach from the TOP you will definately go 100 feet. Most people hit it from half way up the approach and turn going down and still go 50. Face it...if a jump has its own name, its big.
