Using Hotmail, Gmail, etc. in email programs

So I just got a new mac, and am trying to use the mail program. I want to set up my hotmail account using it, but i'm somewhat confused. is hotmail a POP server? or an IMAP? Has anyone set up their hotmail/gmail accounts on the mail program on macs? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

gmail is a pop

incoming server is pop.gmail.com

outgoing server is smtp.gmail.com

Those sites make money on advertising, so they don't want you not visiting thier page.

But I didnt know gmail was pop...sweet.....but thats a rarity for ad-based email

for hotmail you have to get another program, kinds sucks. gmail is easy, they have a picture guide as to how to do it.
