Using a Sled

Ok.... Don't flame me for this, because i live in Indiana and have no BC what-so-ever (or anything out of view of the lodge for that matter). So, people that have sleds, what is the system. I know its great, because it gets you into the BC fast, and to untouched spots, but how do you do it. Drive to you location... then hike the line/hit you wanna ride? Take two people, and run shuttles so you can ski lines fast?

I don't get it? Is its only real purpose to just get you to the BC, so you can hike whatever you want?
 
or if there is an open bowl, ride the sled to the top, push it down to the bottom, ski down to the sled
 
ride tandem up a slope and drop off a skier, one person rides down on sled, one skis down
