Users hating and down rating pictures

Right, an expression denoting the idea that NS has a rosy opinion of the world and that it shouldn't be all puppies and rainbows correct?

Well frankly on the flip side of that there is no reason for it to be crotchety hate like many older folk would like the world of skiing to be.

What we're looking for here is a solid and fair ratings system. There is lots of methods to calculate top ratings which take into account users attempting to game the system. We're just trying to decide which mathematical formula we want to implement. Math can solve the problems of creating fairness, and getting rid of both the "star colored lenses" and the crotchety old haters.

We can check IP, so it is very clear when this happens just like in the other direction.

Bottom line is that all forms of cheating are very easy to detect. We'll build in a better system (as stated above) which eliminates this issue. Just give us some time.

 
just gonna go off topic here and say i have been seeing a lot less spam advertising for the Korean ski company thanks guys it makes this site a much better place
 
I have a very simple solution.

You must comment to rate, and your rating is included with your comment.

That way, you know who rated it what, and why they did.

 
Is there anyway to make it so when you are in latest pictures you can click on the first one than scroll through them in order instead of it going through whatever category that picture is in?
 
yeah some dickwad just did this with the little clip i just posted. i rated myself a 10 (cmon now everyone does it) and within 2 ratings it now has an average of 5.50. SICK.
 
happens to me all the time....especially on youtube....

i uploaded a really legit summer setup edit, and within 1hr it had 3 dislikes, it now has 5 dislikes and 5 likes tho....but still

I like that setup, or even comment to rate but the rating is not shown. Everyone loves comments, well maybe.
 
Yeah but its a good thing to have it be easy to rate something. So I don't know if I'd want it to absolutely go in where you have to make a comment. I did like the earlier suggestion though where it was displayed who voted what.

I can see it happening bigtime in the photos right now, someone is trying to get their photo on the homepage.

We're technically on vacation right now, so I'm not going to call Paul away from his family - but this will get looked into and whoever is doing it is going to get banned again.

We have some solid ideas to quickly implement to at least help. I think that limiting one vote per IP address will really assist, as well as we'll implement our cheat detection formula.

Also, you were the one who made like 8 aliases to downrate other photos? I'm confused here.

It is definitely an issue, but as others said, we need to be able to take criticism when our photos are not the best.

 
Well the reason was that you wanted your photos on the homepage.... I mean that is the very core of downrating isn't it?

Anyways, honestly though we need a system that is fair. Your photos where you put the blurry filter on them on either side aren't good photos to start. I think it is absolutely justified to get a 5.5 on them.

I appreciate that you have some cool tricks in there. That is rad man - but what you should do is really work on the photography part of the photos. Good photography is an art, and a beautiful photo is more than just a cool trick.

 
Bad idea. This will just lead to kids holding grudges and spiting those who rated their content low. Lets not forget the caliber of members we are dealing with here; people who will actually vote other members content down to make their own stuff higher ranked. I think its fucking sad that it has come to this.

One of the best things about the rating system is that it is anonymous. You should be able to vote how you want, and not have to worry about being the only one who voted a certain picture quite low, even if it was your true opinion. It's a shame a few people have to wreck it for all of us - without them, this current system would be great. I agree it should be visible to mods/admins, but not the general public.
 
I do like the logic though that you should stand behind your ratings. That's the thing.... if you give someone a 5 its totally different than a 1. A 1 should be for a totally shitty photo, and if you give someone a 5 you should stand behind it and be able to explain why.

Now, I do agree with you though that this might not be the best way to go about it. People might be inclined to not rate.

Its interesting though, we just ran some stats. Something like 71% of all ratings on the site are 10. Then the rest are clustered around 5 and 1.

What would you guys think if we changed the rating scale? Thumbs up / thumbs down has been suggested before, and personally I don't like it as much as 1-10 but we could do it and it might just help. This would mean though that we'd have to convert ALL historical ratings to the new system and re-calculate everything. So say like 1-3 would be changed to thumbs down, 4-7 into no rating and 8-10 into thumbs up. It would likely change the way that everything on the site is ranked though, and we'd have no way of going back. So all the historical top rated lists would change forever.

As I'm typing this I'm getting more into it though. We have actually discovered some cool math that can be used with a thumbs up / thumbs down system.

 
I'd just like to add that I don't think that videos are as big as a problem with people hating. I hand our ratings of 7-9 often instead of just 10.You could definitely leave the 1-10 stars in for videos.
 
I actually really like that idea, but I think that it might lead to less ratings and more fights. As well, if someone just wants to be a dick and not give a fuck they could simply downrate, post their name and say 'go fuck yourself'. Same issue happens, and we still have to police through gestapo tactics.

I'm pretty sure that the right idea here is to go with up/down voting, and then calculate the score as the lower bound of Wilson score confidence interval for a Bernoulli parameter.

The formula looks like this:

Haha thanks Mr.Bishop now I leaned something what was "Lower bound of Wilson score confidence interval for a Bernoulli parameter". Now I understand why my teacher told us that there where book just about averages. Crazy stuff just for an average !!!

I find it kinda funny that M.Voleurz is complaining about his pic, when you look at his profile pic it makes me remember about Lasagnadog's pic that actually started this thread !!!
 
that's not the best interpretation... I was speaking to the posters concern with a perceived wrong done to him. Simply a suggestion to lighten up in relation to an arbitrary(but your working on that) rating number. You know find balance in personal gratification or something.. existential something or other and all that.

theres a reason some vids get 100 ratings in a day and better videos get 100 views,the people downrating now have 50 aliases to uprate their own vids,
