Germany jumps 10 spots

ZURICH, Switzerland -- The United States improved to No. 6 in FIFA's rankings Wednesday, the Americans' best showing in the monthly ratings by soccer's governing body.

The Americans, who will play in this week's CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals, had never been ranked higher than seventh. They were 10th last month, but passed France, England, Portugal and Spain to move within one spot and three points of rival Mexico.

World Cup champion Brazil remained No. 1, and Argentina improved one spot to second. The Netherlands was third, and the Czech Republic dropped from second to fourth.

France fell two spots to seventh, and England, Spain and Portugal rounded out the top 10.

Germany moved from 21st to 11th, the biggest improvement of any nation in the top 20.

The United States will play Honduras in the Gold Cup semifinals Thursday night in East Rutherford, N.J.

I like soccer and all but its too hard to follow here in the US. So basically, i only watch when its the world cup. But, I have to say, the world cup is like the single greatest sporting event there is.

Fifa World Rankings don’t prove much. France has been in the top ten for nearly 10 years and their team is absolute crap. It’s the team that was knocked out of the group stages of both the 2002 World Cup and the Euro 2004. Whereas England, Germany, Spain, and Portugal have all done better than France at the international level.

Long story shot, it means jack shit.

Actually, France went beyond the group stage of Euro 2004. They lost to Greece in the quaterfinals.

that ranking is crap. MLS is crap. dog poo is crap.

Vancouver whitecaps beat Sunderland 3-0. sunderland jsut got moved up to the premiership. doubt they will last loong. i see relegation in the near future

i went to see england vs. colombia at giants stadium a couple months ago it was amazing, there were over 50,000 people there. right after that game the metrostars and the chicago fire played and i could barley stand to watch it.

in MLS chicago is doing amazing.

gold cup is awesome. i had portugal during the euros and look how that turned out. now i dont even know. brazils just so good again...

MLS is working their way up there. Naturally they are not equal to top-flight European leagues. They are, however, getting much more recognition. Players are being exported to bigger leagues, teams are now participating in international competitions, and the league is gradually expanding.

US soccer has gotten a lot better since the emabaressment in 98(32nd place out of 32 I think). They prob shouldn't be ranked that high. There was a plan many years ago that the US would try it's best to win a world cup by 2010. I think it's called project goal. It's basically not gonna happen. My sister has a good friends that has been playing pro in the czech republic for a few years(was almost on the US natioanl team too, but couldn't becuase of certain complications) and he's said that it's impossible cause there is just too much young talents coming out of europe.

I think the US soccer has gotten considerably farther than it was a long time ago, and the quality of coaches and players is rising.

i cant take him[liam downey] seriously cuz his name reminds me of that downy bear from back when i was a kid -d loc

I don't deny there are bad things in the US right now, hell, 51% of the country to be exact. But god damnit, our country being fat is NOT a problem. I do't give a shit how fat people are. hell, fat kids are harder to kidnap, that means our country is safer.

these ratings are pretty much bullshit. Because Germany is host of the 2006 world cup they dont have to play any qualification matches, which count for this rating. pretty much since the beginning of the qualification round for the world cup germany had no chance to improve their standing, execpt the confed cup, which caused the rise in the ratings.

 
ahhh i hate watching it on the spanish channel though! they had colombia/mexico on though. they cover alot of gold cup. i think i can find it one some obsucre channel though...

remember the last world cup? that was amazing. i stayed up and taped so many games.
