Question that might spark some debate. But really have been thinking about it since I moved here.

Do you guys think the USA really are the greatest country in the world?

No hate, just wondering

According this index at least, the USA ranks 18th overall-http://www.prosperity.com/rankings

Economic Quality - 10th

Business Development - 1st

Governance - 20th

Education - 7th

Health - 30th

Safety & Security - 60th

Personal Freedom - 28th

Social Capital - 9th

Natural Environment - 34th

Yeah, but a lot of opinions always tell different stories, some of the Americans I've met since I'm here, are extremely patriotic (at the end of the day finding something great is subjective) and I was hoping one of them could explain why on this thread.

It's not entirely subjective and this index is making a rather objective claim that the USA is indeed not the greatest country in the world. And I would agree with their conclusions based on the data. And just because a patriotic person has an opinion about it, it doesn't meant that their opinion is valid or sound. Their opinion is subjective but most often clouded and quite often false.

And people say it's the free-est (?) country in the world. Also strongly disagree with that one

Lol. Look at our incarceration rates

It reminds me of the chinpokemon episode of south park. Every time people get pissed off they mention how jealous they are because Americans are so great and have such big dicks or something.

Americans are so free, Americans are so great. Everyone hates us cause we're so free.

An absurd sense of nationalistic pride combined with our relative isolation makes it easy to say fuck everyone else, we're the best! I also dig that we still call our military budget "defense" spending. We've fucked up Latin America with our drug war. But yeah we're so free, everyone is mad because we're so damn free.

Idk. I don't hate America. America is a cool place, I've road tripped all over. The vastly different landscaped you can see in one country are incredible. I just hate the USA chant inbred dickheads that think they're special because they live here.

Definitely not, and especially not right now. Fuck you, Trump supporters, I hope every single one of you fucks die of terribly painful radiation poisoning when we get nuked. You’re swine, so you deserve to die like swine.

Anyways, the best country is probably Sweden.

Guys, that's what I'm saying. Obviously objectively the USA are far from the best country, yet some people still claim that it is.

I hate Trump and his supporters so badly as well, it's driving me insane. I'm not sure if Sweden is #1 though, definitely top 5, but I don't think #1.

Idk about #1 but I'm a big fan of Scandinavia in general. I was just thinking how I need to get back over that way Asap.

Yeah, It’s ignorant to throw it out there as the best, mainly because there are lots of variables that determine something as subjective (like you said) as “the best country”. The reason I say Sweden though, is partly because they are consistently polled as the “happiest” country, even though that is yet again, incredibly subjective. They do have lots of great things going on that polarize them from the United States and other global powers though. For example, Sweden has a great criminal justice system. The prisons and jails are basically like summer camp or bording school. Prisoners have rights to an open campus, as well as theater, arts, sports, etc. And the prisoners are surprisingly respectful of the liberalized system.

trust me i lived there for 10 years, it is a very is a very unhappy country full of unhappy people. the schools suck, the universities suck, the healthcare sucks, the wages suck, everything is twice as expensive, the weather sucks, the government sucks, the major cities suck, the people suck

I don't know a whole bunch about Canada, never been there or anything. But 'The Big Mac Index' says people in the US have less buying power than people from Canada with the same amount of money. So basically Canada isn't more expensive

I'm sorry for my english guys, not sure what's going on today

The US has plenty of flaws and sure we lack significantly in certain areas such as Healthcare, education, life expectancy, obesity, Trump supporters, prisons, drugs, better than you attitudes, the list goes on and on.

But here are some things we are good at:

-We still have the #1 GDP worldwide

-We are undoubtedly the most influential country in the world

-Our national park acerage is second to none and may I point out, are homes to many ski resorts that y'all call home

-Our patriotism is insanely strong even if some people wouldn't like to admit it

-We are the most diverse country in the world even if people are trying to stop it... Ahem.... Trump...

-We KICK ASS in the Olympics. Like fuck everyone in the ass hard win everything because we are so good. Yeah get on our level. Don't even try to argue.

-We have an immense diversity in sports, unlike other countries that just lay claim to maybe soccer and rugby and cricket. Or baseball and soccer. We have it all dudes.

-Our country has an immense diversity of landscapes and vastly different ecosystems that range from Arctic to Tropical to Deserts. Not many countries can say the same.

-We can have guns. This may be a positive or negative opinion to some.

-Music, TV and movies. Come on and be real. Its better here. You're welcome for Hollywood and you're welcome for Netflix.

-Porn. Need I say more? It's better.

-Freedom. Did it first. There's a reason people fled from Europe hundreds of years ago to come here. Anyone who says our liberties are restricted is just simple minded or is mad they can't do something illegal and won't get caught. Sure you can't do or say some things, but in general, we are pretty very free.

*Lastly, and this is a huge point. We are the most important ally to have in a war. Because we will fuck shit up.

That's pretty rich coming from the western country closest to sharia law

In terms of personal freedom, we are quite week in comparison to other developed nations. As noted above, we rank 28th in personal freedom. Our perception of freedom and what we are allowed to do is not as good as many other nations.

I think you misunderstand what American freedom actually is. In this country you are free to run a multi-billion dollar private prison corporation without fear of government overreach or oppressive taxation. In fact, the lack of political will to actually pay for public expenditure in the first place is the very basis for the freedom to run this corporation. And it's so easy to lobby elected officials to keep black and poor people in jail, no one likes them anyway it practically sells itself.

That’s some mighty fine bigotry right there.

If people were dumb enough to support and vote for him, then they deserve any "bigotry" that comes their way. He stands against EVERYTHING this country was founded on and acts like a 10 year old child half the time. If and when the world comes crashing down, I can sit at home and think at least I didn't put this fool in office. Is it just me, or did other people see this coming from a mile away? ..... His inability and immaturity to hold the highest office in the USA. The dude is a train wreck and is not prepared mentally or experience wise to do the job right. He has no temperament. Fuck if he just got off Twitter, it might not be as bad. He's still a crook and an asshole who has no better clue running the country than any other lay person or the rednecks and hicks who voted him there.

I really wonder how much longer Norway will keep their top spot on worlds best countries. It looks like we're moving away from fossile fuels and we hopefully stop drilling for oil. It will obviously impact our economy when we stop drilling, but we have so much built up in funds that it might just keep being the best country for a really long time.

I really hope the US soon realize what it takes to maintain a good country.

So much hatred and divisiveness, you think that’s gonna make anything better?

Sounds like quality of life is the best in countries such as Sweden and Switzerland currently if you wanna compare it to the states

That list ranks Canada as #2 in personal freedom where misgendering a trans person is punishable hate speech. How does Canada have more personal freedom than the United States? Spain is #16, explain how a country who forcibly removes people from voting booths has more personal freedom than the US.

You can dig deeper into their metrics and their explanation of personal freedom. In many of the countries that rank higher than the USA in personal freedom, a lot of that is based on the country giving its citizens the ability to do more with their lives. An example of that is if people are given more/easier access to health care and education, they are more able to fulfill their personal goals, ambitions, and more easily be the person they want to be. Also, looking at drug legalization, unfettered access to women's health, etc. many of these countries allow their citizens to simply do more with their lives.

Now, I don't think any of them are perfect and I would consider myself a free-speech absolutist so these hate speech laws or Holocaust denial laws are absolutely absurd to me. But one of the things a lot of people should realize is that personal freedom is not in direct connection to how little government you have, which is what a lot of Americans believe. Freedom should always be examined through the lens of how able am I to be the person I want to be, and what impediments are there that may prevent this from happening. The cornerstone of this is being able to do what you want while at the same time not infringing upon other autonomous people in the process. The USA embraces this to an extent for sure, but there are other countries that do a better job at this. Trump's desire to inject religious bigotry into our healthcare, education, and business practices is a huge step in the opposite direction. That healthcare providers could be able to refuse services based on their own individual beliefs is absolutely insane and flies in the face of promoting personal freedom.
