Ok so I know we have some very intelligent and/or opinionated people on ns and I have to do a seminar in a week on the US foreign policy and how it has a negative impact on Canada, anyone have any good examples they wish to share with me. I'm pretty much focusing on the war and how Canada didn't joint he coalition of the wiliing, ect. But any new ideas would be apprciated. Thank youuu

canada and us are largest trading partners so canada is forced to follow US lead in everything they do or they suffer economic backlash.

On a national political level most of the actual meaningful tension is economic (read: softwood lumber etc) than it is concerned with foreign policy. US foreign policy has arguably further segregated the country politically though; the chasm between left and right is more pronounced and obvious than it's been in a long time. But I'd say that's more of a product of the same thing happening in the US than as a direct result of the war.

 
canadians arent forced to do anything... we do what we feel is right. like when US wanted us to go to war with them, we didnt follow them to Iraq because there wasnt a reason... i know that was kind of off the topic, but i had to use it as an example.

I had an uncle who was a dealer of John Deere tractors (of all things).. as you can imagine, he had quite a few customers in the US. Anyhow. the war broke out and it was decided that Canada wouldn't support it.. you're either with us or against us crap (anyone pick up on that in Star Wars BTW??).

So, he called up some of his customers and they said "you're from canada right? well, since you (meaning canada) don't support the war, we're not buying from you anymore, click."

I think South Park started the tension between the two countries, I know blame everything on Canada. I blame Canada for the high gas prices.

a classic example would be the trade restrictions for beef between the u.s. and canada due to "mad cow outbreak". its really just an american ploy to put pressure on the canadian farmers and government.

im canadian, my opinion is that because the us is a very powerful neighbor on the world scale holds an influence through its reputation, army, power to withhold resources, whether stopping our exports or stopping their improts, these can all influence our goverment and population, me im cool with the states

I think that people all over the world are way ignorant when it comes to politics and foreign relations. There is too much of this I don't like them because they don't like us- like with the U.S. and France. Too much generalization, etc. I think that 90% of Americans, including me, think Canada is pretty cool. Same thing with Australia and Britain, and most other western countries. I know that much of the pent up agression (if you want to call it that) between France and the U.S. stems from the World War one and two era with the U.S. waiting to help out (which pissed off France a lot) and then the U.S. comming in, saving France, and subsequently thinking that France owes them something for it. The U.S. thinks France is ungrateful, France thinks the U.S. in arogant. I think both sides need to get over it. France should acknowledge that we really did save their asses twice, and sacrafice about 50,000 soldiers for them, and we should acknowledge that we should have stepped in earlier...both times.

I was up in Canada, when some Canadians herd I was American, they started giving me shit, pushed me around a bit, then I went back to the heartland of America with stories of prejudice of the great white north.

Mad cow, millions of farmers are out of their homes, their lives are ruined because then thought we had mad crow in our country, even though it was taken care of with the proper precautions.

The americans don't even has a system to check if there is mad cow. They could have thousands of cases in the country right now, the reason that china is closed the borders to american beef, and open their borders to ours.

And all this trouble was caused by ronald ragan, and Brian Malroony with the Free trade agreement, since then we have been fucked.

Uh, no dumbass. There are at least 6 government agencies in the US that keep an eye out for things like for mad cow. You might have heard or one...the FDA?
