Upgrading RAM

So I'm upgrading my 1GB of RAM although I can't decide which memory sticks to get; help me out.

Memory bay 1: 512MB

Memory bay 2: 512MB

Memory bay 3: 0MB

Memory bay 4: 0MB

So how big of memory sticks should I buy and what should be the placement of them?

P.S I'm running a 32-bit operating system.

and waste that extra 50 bucks?

two gigs is the most you'll need unless you are editing vids or doing autoCAD stuff. throw out or save the other two sticks and buy a cheap two gig kit from www.newegg.com

you can get two gigs cheap, like 30 bucks

good brands are Corsair, OCZ

Personally, I would get 2X 1gb sticks, giving you a total of 3gb. Just make sure slots 1 and 3 have one kind of ram, and slots 2 and 4 have the other.

If you really want to go crazy, you could get four 1-gig sticks, but anything over 3 gigs is Totally Useless unless you have a 64-bit operating system. If you do have a 64-bit OS, then 4 is more than enough to suit your needs.

And another bit of advice, two sticks of 1gb ram is faster than one stick with 2gb.

Thank you for that, I was thinking of that but I wasn't sure if that would work. So if I get a two pack of 1GB memory sticks and put them every second slot with the 512MBs in-between that should work right?

Another Question:

What does CAS Latency mean? Is it important? I searched Google but it's like reading in a different language.

if you have DDR2 ram which you probably do get around 2 gb ram that is all you need unless you want to go crazy. I like 4 but who is counting. If you get 2gb, go with 2 1gb and get rid of the 2 512s. What happens if they are the Same PC3200 (just example) number they will run at the slower speed. For example if the 512mb rams are PC3200 and you buy 2gb at PC6400 or what ever the two 512mb's will slow down the 2gb to the PC3200 instead of using full capacity. You should always make sure you are running the same shit. So if you want to keep the 512mb's just make sure you get the 2 1GB ram at the same speed otherwise it can be a waste
