UP Michigan

Been thinking about moving from Colorado to the up. Probably ironwood or Bessemer. There’s a few hills really close and I only really ride park so idc about big mtn stuff plus they get some decent pow up there. I’ve been out there a few times and liked it. Anyone have any thoughts or experiences out there?

The UP fucks. I live an hour south of the border in north WI. As far as park goes, it’s pretty monkey shit man. Like I mainly ski park and whenever I’m up there I just rip glades. Essentially it’s gonna be a massive downgrade from CO. If by chance you do desire to ski some fun big mountain stuff, Mt. Bohemia is fuckin awesome. They’ve got a one day szn pass sale for $100 in November sometime. The UP locals are super chill and the vibes up there are always great.

I’d personally stay within the red if you’re wanting to ski frequently. Mt. Bohemia isn’t listed but it’s north of Ripley.

Stay near the water, otherwise you will be in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah I’m kinda trying to live in the middle of nowhere and Being near Indian head, powderhorn and blackjack isn’t to bad imo. Plus being close to tons of great fishing in Wisconsin

I fuckin love the UP, I used to wanna move out to CO but the cost is insane, I live 4 hours south of Houghton/Copper Harbor/Marquette and after I'm done with school probably gonna move up there. Theres so much to do and the cost of living isnt absolutely insane.

PS. Michigan weed hits better than CO weed to be honest

Haha yeah I’m pretty used to the monkey shit, I grew up in Wisconsin

underrated access to outdoor activities. yeah its not on the tier of Utah, Colorado, etc., but being able to afford living and still be able to enjoy activities makes MI a cool place, though its still kinda expensive there. The woods are truly da woods up there.

Never actually got to ski in the UP but I spent winters as a kid riding snowmobiles up there and skied in the lower pennisula all over. MI will always be home and always hits different, even as a Utahn now.

the KP of the UP is the most rugged part of the whole thing...

The U.P.

Pretty cool place.

As far as skiing goes, the place to be is Houghton. Ripley has a sick park and get's deep. Fun little hill right by downtown. A good place to meet ski homies. Boho is only 45 minutes away and believe it or not there are actually some pretty accessible "backcountry" zones that are fun to hike out to in the middle of nowhere. Boho is awesome, and during the summer you have access to literally the best mtb trails in the state (arguably the best in all of the midwest) and all the hiking and public lands you can imagine. I've spent a decent chunk of time in Montana, and honestly, it's just like that, but with much smaller hills of course.

Houghton is also cheap af to live in. Even cheaper if you go north or south in the smaller towns. I pay 300 bucks for rent and I'm within walking distance of the waterfront and all the bars.

There aren't many people. Even when mtu is in session it still feels kinda empty. For some people, that's a positive thing. The Keweenaw is about is rugged and rural as it gets in the midwest excluding northern Minnesota. If you like the outdoors it's unlikely you will ever get bored. Also, you can ski, skate, and surf in the same day without driving for more than an hour. Lotta cool history and old abandoned mining shit up here as well. Also cool to bike downtown, grab a beer, and watch the seaplanes land on the portage.

I wouldn't go down by the Wisconsin border. You miss out on a lot of the cool shit that only the U.P. has to offer. Ironwood is just extended Wisconsin. So if you are going to make the move, Houghton or Marquette are the only areas you should go to.

Stop, you're making me want to move back to Houghton and I haven't even gotten a Tahoe winter yet.

I could gladly live and ski in the UP. Western states have great skiing but you put up with a lot of shit too, namely spots being blown out and price of living. If I can just rip and be one with nature - I’m golden. Plus Bohemia has 900ft of vert. Fuck ya bud.
