Unpopular(?) Opinion: Helmet Edition

I cannot imagine how tired all of our kids must be seeing this topic being brought up so fucking much for so fucking long.

Helmets=skiers choice. Shut up if you think you should wear one, and shut up if you think it doesn’t matter. Just do your own thing and stop trying to convince everyone else you’re right.

Meant to say our mods** not kids

Here in Canada, it's all about insurance. The tiny resort I work at it's mandatory to wear a helmet in the park because our of insurance company. Having a policy which allows not wearing helmets in the park would probably double our monthly premiums, and the resort is pretty broke already. Not in the budget.

With our current insurance policy for example, if evidence was shown in court that we didn't enforce helmets in the park then we could lose an enormous lawsuit.

Helmet mandates are just as authoritative as mask mandates

I see. Glad I live in america where bullshit circumstances like this don’t exist lol.

My dad paralyzed himself from the neck down with a helmet on. If only he was wearing roost deflector / chest protector / body armor, maybe he would have fractured his spine a little less bad but who knows.

Look I get it, people can crack their melon and that it would be stupid to not wear them, but you know what else is stupid? Flying at 40 mph on two wooden planks and hucking ur body into the sky and flipping upside down, or grinding a metal rail that you can fall on. Don't tell people to "wear a helmet" to protect themselves if ur gonna also participate in a risky ass activity for fun. Don't ski if you don't wanna get hurt how about that? Let people be, there will always be rare instances of people getting fucked up in action sports, you can only do so much. People have died with helments on and gotten permanent brain damage too. We should all never forget these people. Ride kevin, and ski in paradise sarah burke.

After watching my dad mope in an electric wheelchair for a decade, I can say with every inch of me, from the bottom of my stomach, the only thing you can do to truly keep yourself protected, is to ride within your limits. Other than that, it's up to chance whether or not a freak accident will fuck you up for life.

I have refrained from giving my thoughts on this topic for a while but after seeing jackasses in the comments bashing non-helmet users for no fucking reason time and time again I felt the need to just remind everyone that the only way you're gonna get hurt skiing aside from a wild coincidence is by literally pushing your limits. helmets can help but if you are progressing to wild extremes, you should know exactly what you are putting at stake, and it's not just head injuries that can fuck you up. Most pros probably realize this and understand how much danger they are in constantly, which is why they choose comfort since at the end of the day, a head injury is just one of many that can leave you permanently damaged for the rest of your life...

This is what's up. I'm not about to ruin mine and my families life to impress someone skiing. I surely push my limits sometimes but it's an incremental thing not massive leaps beyond what I know my capabilities are.

Vibes to your family, I can't imagine the stress.

Don't bother unless there people in your group. Last for like week I didn't were a helmet cause I thought it looked bad my friend "bullied" me back into helmets. This year he says he wants to not wear one for looks and I just tell him helmets are cool

I really hate seeing young homies come through my place of work with injuries that could have potentially been avoided with some noggin' protection.

1015030.jpegThe worst part is seeing the families reaction after they hear/see what happened to their son/daughter.

just finished watching the child labor film..amazing to see how little peeps be wearing a lid...different if your just cruising around the hill saucing kfeds and sw lip to sw. Especially on some of those high stake spots all it takes is a lil mistake and you could be a goner

Whats up ns?????????????

I have seen a lot of pro skiers/snowboarders repping the no helmet gang and I just wanna say, how does cracking your brain stem on a rock or tree sound to you? Like I understand the rush of not having your head be warm or having your hat always fucking fall off but I'm still confused. Seriously though, what's the benefit? Do you think you look cooler? Do you not care about your head not cracking open? Clowning on homies for wearing an old bike helmet while your dumbass is in a stupid beanie that will protect your head about as much as a piece of paper would doesn't make you a "skits cunt" like you always wanted.

Wear a fucking helmet.

mind your own business

I'm very confident skier & calculated risk taker but still I wear a helmet, crash pants, & back protector every single time I clip into my skis. I only take my goggles off on a hiking sesh. Just like I use a seatbelt when driving a car. Not because I don't trust myself, but because I can never control everything. It's also a huge role model factor for anyone below your skill level and/or age.

Such an american view of life to think it's just about yourself. Life is NEVER just about you.

IMO if you are skiing anywhere that is not groomers you should wear a back protector. All it takes is one backseat landing or fall on some sketchy rocks to mess up your spine. Protection and skiing is a strange thing. Downhill mountain bikers heading up the exact same lifts in the summer would not think twice about wearing a full set of pads but when it comes to skiing people shy away from any kind of protection.

Also, your measurement of risk changes drastically when you have kids. Knowing you might nail yourself and your family with thousands in medical bills and not be able to work is simply not a option so you have to weigh your activities accordingly.

Depends on how hard your pushing.

Learning new tricks in an icy east coast terrain park? Yeah, wear a helmet.

cruising tree runs out west m and hitting some easy kickers when the snow is nice and soft?

No, you dont need a helmet.

The funny part is when idiots like op think their helmet makes them invincible and the royally fuck themselves up.
