unlocking cell phones

My dad is coming to visit me in Thailand but he's scared shitless of being away from his cell phone. I dont want him using mine, so I thought he should bring his own. How do you unlock them? I know there's websites that charge money, but I'm just looking for a free service. I'm sure it's just a computer key generator that you plug some numbers into and it spits out a code, but I really dont want to pay.

A phone number here costs like 5 bucks (seriously, I have two numbers) and so this would just be way easier. Anybody have a website they can hook me up with? Thanks

hate to burst your bubble, but you've been misinformed if i'm understanding your correctly.

unless the phone your dad has can talk on the same frequencies available where you are, he's SOL. There's the possibility that he can talk on a GSM network if he has T-Mobile. They're about the only (but not only) large U.S. provider that has a world-wide compatible phone.

I believe most of the cell phone companies communicate somewhere in the mid 800 Mhz band. I know some of those bands overlap with European open standards on the 868 Mhz band...so that won't work. You can't reprogram your phone to communicate on another band and if you can/do you have to have the same authentication protocol for that network you're jumping to.

In other words, don't waste your time searching...if a line is $5 over there, get him a line while he's there or have his voicemail tell people to call him on that line.

I can go on for hours about why this won't work...and this post wasn't meant to be rude, so, please, don't take it that way.
